Who Plays Marquis De Gramont?
Marquis de Gramont John Wick: Who Is He?
The Marquis is the young, ruthless aristocrat who hunts John Wick with the High Table's full backing in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), directed by Chad Stahelski. Bill Skarsgård plays him, third in the billing behind Keanu Reeves and Donnie Yen, and the credits list him only as Marquis.
What does he do? John has just killed the Elder in Morocco, and the Marquis goes after him with the organization behind him. He strips Winston of his role, destroys the New York Continental, has Charon killed and forces Caine out of retirement by threatening Caine's daughter. If you are new to the saga, start with the John Wick movies in order guide, then read the John Wick 4 film page for the full cast and crew.
One distinction keeps the villains straight. In John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum the figure above the High Table was the Elder, played by Saïd Taghmaoui, and George Georgiou plays the Elder in Chapter 4. The Marquis does not sit above the table: he is the enforcer it sends.

The Marquis in John Wick 4: Story ArcSpoilers
The Marquis only becomes a threat because of what John does first: once the Elder is dead in Morocco, the High Table hands this young aristocrat unlimited authority to settle the matter. His first moves are about people rather than bullets. Winston loses his role, Charon is killed, and the New York Continental is wrecked. Caine, a blind retired assassin and an old friend of John, is dragged back into the work because his daughter's safety is the leverage.
From there the story becomes a chase across three cities. In Osaka, John holds out at the Continental run by his friend Shimazu against wave after wave of High Table enforcers. Shimazu dies protecting him, and Caine chooses to spare Shimazu's daughter Akira. Then comes the plan: John learns that the only way to end the hunt is to challenge the Marquis to a formal duel, and a challenger needs a crime family behind him. That sends him to Berlin and the Ruska Roma, where Katia sets a price. He must kill Killa Harkan first, and he manages it with Caine and the bounty hunter known as the Tracker alongside him.
The last stretch is the road to Paris. Winston agrees to serve as John's second, staking his own life on the outcome. The duel is fixed for sunrise at Sacré-Cœur, and the Marquis answers by naming a reluctant Caine to fight in his place.
The Marquis and His Enemies: Winston, Caine, Charon and John
The Marquis is defined by who he presses against, and his closest ties are with Winston, Caine, Charon and John. Winston, played by Ian McShane, is the man the Marquis strips of his role. Winston later returns the pressure by agreeing to be John's second, so his life depends on the same duel. You can follow his side of that in the Winston John Wick profile.
Caine, played by Donnie Yen, is the Marquis's instrument. He is forced to hunt John because the Marquis threatens his daughter, and the Marquis then names him as his stand-in for the duel. The Caine John Wick profile covers how that loyalty to his daughter shapes every choice he makes.
Charon, played by Lance Reddick, appears across the films, and the Marquis has him killed, a separate act from the destruction of the New York Continental. The Charon John Wick page covers the character across the films. John, played by Keanu Reeves, is the target throughout, and the John Wick character page has his side.
One more name to keep apart: the Chancellor, played by Gabriel Byrne, is the cult leader in Ballerina, a separate story set during Chapter 3 and unrelated to the Marquis.
How Does the Marquis Die in John Wick 4?Spoilers
John Wick kills the Marquis in the sunrise duel at Sacré-Cœur in Paris. John fights his way through a city full of assassins and climbs the Rue Foyatier steps to reach the duel. Caine, standing in for the Marquis, wounds John, but Winston points out that John has not yet fired his third shot. John takes it and kills the Marquis.
The death carries rules weight as well as dramatic weight. The Harbinger honors the result by freeing John, Caine and Caine's daughter from their obligations to the High Table, and he gives Winston back his position. John collapses at the top of the steps, badly hurt. A later scene shows Winston and the Bowery King visiting a gravestone with John's name on it, beside the grave of his wife Helen, and the film leaves open whether John is truly dead.
There is one more consequence. In a post credit scene, Caine reunites with his daughter in Paris, and then Akira, seeking revenge for her father's death, approaches him with a knife. So the Marquis's hunt leaves one new grudge standing after his own death.
Best Marquis Moments in John Wick: Chapter 4
The best Marquis moments are the destruction of the New York Continental, his choice of Caine as stand-in and the third shot twist in the duel, and in my opinion he works as a villain because he attacks John through other people. Compare him with Viggo Tarasov in the first film: Viggo is a crime boss who puts a large bounty on John after learning who his son wronged, while the Marquis is the High Table's authority with a face. It could be argued that Skarsgård plays that difference well.
The moment that defines him for me is the destruction of the New York Continental, because it removes the neutral ground the whole series has relied on since the first film. The second is his choice of Caine as stand-in for the duel. It is a cruel idea, and it puts two old friends on opposite sides of the Rue Foyatier steps, with John climbing toward a duel he cannot fire his way out of.
The third is the duel's twist on the rules. Winston reminds everyone that John still has a third shot, and John uses it. In my opinion it is a rare payoff in this saga where a rulebook, not a stunt, decides the fight.
The craft around the Paris scenes helps. Cinematographer Dan Laustsen has described night for day sequences in Paris and an overhead shot built in Germany, according to TheWrap. The production also shot in Paris at locations including the Louvre and the Arc de Triomphe, according to Screen Daily. If you want to see how the film ranks against the rest of the saga, I cover that in John Wick movies ranked.
