Sofia Al-Azwar John Wick: Who She Is and Who Plays Her

Sofia Al-Azwar is an old associate of John Wick, played by Halle Berry in John Wick: Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019), and the credits list her simply as "Sofia". The plot summaries give her full name as Sofia Al-Azwar, so you will see both forms across the saga.

Berry is billed second, directly behind Keanu Reeves as John Wick. Ian McShane (Winston), Laurence Fishburne (the Bowery King) and Mark Dacascos (Zero) follow her in the billing, which puts her ahead of several of the saga's best known faces.

Her job in the story is easy to state. John arrives in Casablanca after the Director of the Ruska Roma arranges his passage, and he needs a way to the Elder, the only person who can lift his status. Sofia's main relationship is with John Wick, whom she knows from before the film, and that label of old associate carries the history without a long explanation.

The Director of the Ruska Roma, played by Anjelica Huston, sends John toward Casablanca, which makes her the link in the chain that leads to Sofia. In my opinion, Sofia's best scene is the kasbah escape, because it shows what John's excommunicado status costs him once he leaves New York. In Manhattan he is hunted by assassins who know the city; in Casablanca he is a foreign target who needs a local ally, and Sofia is that ally. The escape ends with her leaving him in the desert, which is the cleanest way the film could have shown that her help has limits.

It could be argued that the desert departure is the sharper beat. It closes her part of the story with no speech and sends John on toward the Elder, whose price (kill Winston Scott and serve the High Table for life) drives the rest of the film. John's cut ring finger then pays for that deal, and the Winston shooting that follows turns out to be a ruse. Perhaps that abruptness is why the Casablanca act sticks in the memory: Sofia is the only major ally in the film who simply walks away.

The scale of the film around her is worth a comparison. Chapter 3 had a $75 million budget, up from $40 million for john wick 2, and it grossed $328 million worldwide against $174 million for Chapter 2, according to Box Office Mojo. Chapter 2 moved the series to Rome after New York, as Screen Global Production reported in January 2016, and Chapter 3 pushes the same idea further by sending John across to Morocco. Halle Berry's billing in second place, ahead of Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne, reflects how much of that expansion rests on her scenes.
