Who Is John Hammond in Jurassic Park?
John Hammond is the billionaire founder who builds a theme park of living dinosaurs, made from recovered ancient DNA, on a remote island in Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg. Richard Attenborough plays him, billed fourth under the single name Hammond. He returns, billed fifth and credited as John Hammond, in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), also directed by Spielberg. So, if you are asking who played John Hammond in Jurassic Park, the answer is Attenborough both times, and no other actor is credited in the role in the top billed cast of the other main films.
Hammond pays for the park, invites the experts to approve it, and later argues for leaving the animals alone. Across the original Jurassic Park movies he moves from owner of the attraction to the voice asking that the dinosaurs be left in peace.

John Hammond's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Hammond's arc across two films takes him from confident showman to a man who spends his last screen appearance pleading for the animals to be left alone. It begins in Jurassic Park (1993) with a death on the island. A worker has been killed, the investors are nervous, and they send a lawyer to insist that independent experts look the place over. Hammond's reply is to invite Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler and Ian Malcolm, and he also sends his two grandchildren on the tour. In effect, he treats the inspection as a chance to show off.
Malcolm is the one who refuses to be dazzled. He tells the group that a park built on controlling nature is bound to fail, and the film spends its second half proving him right. Dennis Nedry cuts the security systems to smuggle out embryos, the fences lose power while the vehicles sit in the Tyrannosaurus paddock, and the night becomes a fight to survive. When it ends, Hammond concedes that the park cannot be saved. Grant agrees not to endorse it, and everyone leaves by helicopter.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) finds him in a weaker position. His nephew Peter Ludlow has taken control of InGen and wants captured dinosaurs for an attraction in San Diego. Hammond tells Malcolm that Isla Sorna is where the animals were bred, and he asks for a small team to document them and win support for leaving them alone. Malcolm says no until he learns that Sarah Harding is already there. Hammond's last scene is a television appearance in which he says the animals should be left alone, and the island is declared a protected nature reserve.
Who Are John Hammond's Allies and Rivals?
Hammond's closest ties are with the three experts he recruits, his grandchildren and the people who undermine him. Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler are two of the three experts he invites to approve the park in Jurassic Park (1993), and they are awed by the first living dinosaurs they see. Alan Grant ends up agreeing not to endorse the park, while Ellie Sattler works with the game warden to restore the power.
Ian Malcolm is the sharpest voice against him in the first film and a reluctant recruit in the second. Hammond asks Malcolm to join the Isla Sorna team, and Malcolm refuses until he learns that his girlfriend Sarah Harding is already on the island. Hammond's grandchildren, Tim and Lex, played by Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards, tour the park and are attacked by the Tyrannosaurus.
Then there are the rivals. The investors send a lawyer to demand the inspection, and Wayne Knight plays Nedry, the programmer who sabotages the park for money. In the sequel, Arliss Howard plays Peter Ludlow, Hammond's nephew, who takes over InGen and wants the dinosaurs for San Diego.
A later film brings in a different owner. Irrfan Khan is credited as Masrani in Jurassic World (2015), where the park's owner pushes for a new attraction that leads to the Indominus rex. Hammond is not in that film's top billed cast.
What Happened to John Hammond? His Fate and DeathSpoilers
The films that show Hammond leave him alive: he survives Jurassic Park (1993) and he is alive on television at the close of The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). In the first film he admits the park was a mistake and leaves the island by helicopter with the other survivors. In the second, he announces that the animals should be left alone, and the island is protected.
So, what was the cause of John Hammond's death? The plots of the main films give none, because they do not show him dying. He is not in the top billed cast of Jurassic Park III, Jurassic World (2015), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Jurassic World Dominion or Jurassic World Rebirth. His absence from Jurassic Park 3 fits the story, which follows Grant, the Kirbys and Billy on Isla Sorna.
Best John Hammond Moments, Ranked by Impact
In my opinion, Hammond's best moment is his admission at the end of Jurassic Park (1993) that the park cannot be saved. It lands because it follows the Tyrannosaurus breakout, the raptors in the visitor center and an escape that only works because a T. rex arrives at the right moment. By then the man who built the park has nothing left to defend, and Grant's agreement not to endorse it closes the matter.
Second, I would pick the invitation itself. Investors demand an inspection, and Hammond answers by bringing Grant, Sattler and Malcolm to the island. It could be argued that this is the most revealing choice he makes, since Malcolm is already on record warning that a park built on controlling nature is bound to fail, and Hammond also brings his own grandchildren along.
Third is his television announcement in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). Paradoxically, the man who built the park becomes the one asking that the dinosaurs be left alone, while his nephew Ludlow is the one who wants to exploit them. That reversal is the cleanest way to read Hammond: the first film is his failure, and the sequel is his attempt to put something right.
