Who Plays Dr. Alan Grant?

Who Is Alan Grant in Jurassic Park?

Alan Grant is the paleontologist John Hammond invites to inspect his dinosaur park in Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg. Sam Neill plays him and is billed first, ahead of Laura Dern as Ellie Sattler and Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm. The 1993 credits list him simply as Grant, while Jurassic Park III credits him as Dr. Alan Grant and Jurassic World Dominion as Alan Grant.

The setup is simple. After a worker dies in an accident on Hammond's island, the investors send a lawyer to demand an expert inspection. Hammond invites Grant, paleobotanist Ellie Sattler and chaos theorist Ian Malcolm to tour the park and give it their approval, and Hammond's two grandchildren come along too. Grant and Sattler are amazed by the first living dinosaurs they see, and the film lets the audience share that awe before the power fails.

If you are new to the series, think of Grant as the scientist who can be impressed by a miracle and still refuse to sell it. He appears in three of the seven main films, and the others are covered in the Jurassic Park movies in order guide.

Alan Grant's Story Arc Across Three FilmsSpoilers

Grant's arc runs through three films: he goes from a skeptical expert guest, to a protector of children, to a reluctant guide, and finally to a witness who helps expose a company. In the first film he tours the park, and when Dennis Nedry shuts down the security systems the power failure disables the electric fences just as the tour vehicles sit in the Tyrannosaurus paddock. The big predator breaks out and attacks the children and Malcolm. Grant finds the children and they survive a night in the park, and he begins to feel protective of them.

Later he and the others fight through the visitor center while the raptors hunt them. A Tyrannosaurus rex arrives and attacks the raptors, which lets everyone escape. Hammond accepts that the park cannot be saved, Grant agrees not to endorse it, and the survivors leave the island by helicopter. Grant watches the children sleep on the way out.

In Jurassic Park III (2001), directed by Joe Johnston, Grant is struggling to find money for his velociraptor research. Paul and Amanda Kirby offer funding if he will guide them on a flight over Isla Sorna, and he brings his assistant Billy and some hired men. He learns the Kirbys are really searching for their teenage son Eric. A Spinosaurus wrecks their plane, and the survivors cross the island on foot. Grant works out that the raptors are hunting them because Billy had secretly taken raptor eggs, and he returns the eggs. He later uses a replica of a raptor resonating chamber to confuse the pack. The group reaches the coast and U.S. Marines and Navy forces pick them up.

By Jurassic World Dominion (2022), directed by Colin Trevorrow, dinosaurs live all over the world. Ellie Sattler learns that engineered locusts are devouring crops that do not use seeds from Biosyn Genetics, and she and Grant suspect Biosyn is behind it. They join the larger group at the Biosyn site, escape by helicopter while the Giganotosaurus fights Rexy the T. rex, and then testify against the company.

Alan Grant's Relationships: Ellie, Hammond, Malcolm and the Kids

Grant's most important relationship is with Ellie Sattler, played by Laura Dern, who appears in the first film, in Jurassic Park III (billed ninth) and again in Dominion. Were Alan Grant and Ellie together in Jurassic Park? The 1993 story shows them touring the park side by side as two of the experts Hammond invites. Dominion is the film that frames them as having a relationship to repair, and they reconcile and testify together against Biosyn. For more on her side of the story, see Ellie Sattler.

His bond with John Hammond, played by Richard Attenborough, is professional and then moral. Hammond invites him to endorse the park, and after the disaster Hammond admits the park was a mistake while Grant agrees not to endorse it. Read the full profile at John Hammond. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, is the one who warns that a place built on controlling nature is bound to fail. In Dominion, Malcolm now works for Biosyn and helps expose its CEO Lewis Dodgson, which puts him on the same side as Grant by the end.

Grant's connection with the children, Tim and Lex (Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards), is the emotional center of the first film, since he begins to feel protective of them during the night in the park. In Jurassic Park III he looks after Eric Kirby, the teenager who survived alone for weeks in a stranded parasail rig, and works alongside his assistant Billy Brennan.

Why is Alan Grant not in Jurassic Park 2? The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) sends Malcolm to Isla Sorna to bring back his girlfriend Sarah Harding, and the story gives Grant no role. For the full roster, see Jurassic Park cast.

What Happened to Alan Grant? His Fate in the FilmsSpoilers

Alan Grant survives every film he appears in, and his last on screen moment is giving testimony against Biosyn in Jurassic World Dominion. In the 1993 film he leaves the island by helicopter with the other survivors, and the final shots show birds flying over the sea. In Jurassic Park III he is picked up from the beach with the Kirbys and Billy by Marines and Navy forces, who were alerted by the earlier satellite phone call.

In Dominion he escapes the burning Biosyn site by helicopter. Henry Wu then releases a locust carrying the counter agent, which ends the swarms, and the United Nations makes the Biosyn valley an international sanctuary for dinosaurs. Ellie and Alan repair their relationship and give testimony against the company. No film shows Grant dying, so his future after Dominion is open. Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) is set five years after Dominion, and Grant is not among its top 15 billed cast.

Alan Grant's Best Moments (Opinion)

In my opinion, Grant's best moments are the ones where he solves a problem by understanding the animals rather than by fighting them. The clearest example is Jurassic Park III, where he realizes the raptors want their eggs back and returns them, then uses a replica of a raptor resonating chamber to confuse the pack. It is a nice change from the usual chase, and it fits a character who started the series as a paleontologist and not an action hero.

The second pick is the night in the first film when Grant finds Tim and Lex and begins to feel protective of them. It could be argued that this is the quiet hinge of the whole 1993 story, because it ends with Grant watching the children sleep in a helicopter. Set that beside Hammond's attempt to sell wonder to visitors, and Grant's version of care looks far more convincing.

Third, perhaps, is the moment in the visitor center when the Tyrannosaurus rex arrives and attacks the raptors, giving the survivors time to flee. Grant is one of the people saved by luck there, which says something about how the first film treats its experts. The last pick is Dominion, where he and Ellie testify against Biosyn: a scientist who refused to endorse the park in 1993 ends his run refusing to shield a company whose CEO had the locusts modified.
