Jurassic Park Characters: Who Is Who Across All Seven FilmsSpoilers
Seven main films introduce dozens of Jurassic Park characters, but the saga leans on about a dozen leads, each named below with the actor and the film where they first appear. If you are new to the series, the easiest way in is to treat it as two casts that meet in the middle: the scientists and survivors of the original trilogy, and the Jurassic World crew who take over from 2015. The jurassic park cast page covers the actors in more depth, and jurassic park movies in order shows where each film sits.
The Original Jurassic Park Characters (1993 to 2001)
Jurassic Park (1993), directed by Steven Spielberg, builds its story around four people. Alan Grant, played by Sam Neill, is the paleontologist John Hammond invites to approve his park, and Ellie Sattler, played by Laura Dern, is the paleobotanist who joins him. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum, is the chaos theorist who warns that a park built on controlling nature is bound to fail. John Hammond, played by Richard Attenborough, is the billionaire behind the whole project, and by the end he admits the park cannot be saved. Hammond's two grandchildren, Tim Murphy (Joseph Mazzello) and Lex Murphy (Ariana Richards), come along for the tour, and Grant starts to feel protective of them once they survive a night in the park.
The supporting cast supplies most of the film's casualties. Robert Muldoon, the game warden played by Bob Peck, is killed by the raptors while Sattler tries to restore power. Dennis Nedry, the greedy programmer played by Wayne Knight, is paid to steal embryos, shuts down security to cover his escape and is killed by a spitting dinosaur. Gennaro, the investors' lawyer played by Martin Ferrero, flees the Tyrannosaurus paddock and does not survive. BD Wong appears as Wu, a character who comes back in three later films, and Samuel L. Jackson is credited as Arnold.
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), also directed by Spielberg, moves Malcolm to the front. He reluctantly joins a team on Isla Sorna because his girlfriend Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) is already there, and his daughter Kelly Curtis (Vanessa Lee Chester) stows away. Hammond returns, having lost control of InGen to his nephew Peter Ludlow (Arliss Howard), who plans to bring captured dinosaurs to San Diego. Ludlow's hunting party is led by Roland Tembo (Pete Postlethwaite), while Nick Van Owen (Vince Vaughn) frees the animals and sabotages the hunters' camp. Ludlow is killed by the Tyrannosaurus he shipped to the mainland.
Jurassic Park 3 (2001), directed by Joe Johnston, puts Grant back in charge. Paul Kirby (William H. Macy) and Amanda Kirby (Téa Leoni) hire him as a guide, but they are really searching for their son Eric (Trevor Morgan), who has survived alone for weeks in a stranded parasail rig. Billy Brennan (Alessandro Nivola), Grant's assistant, secretly took raptor eggs, which explains why the pack hunts the group. Grant, the Kirbys and Billy all leave the island alive.
The Jurassic World Characters (2015 to 2025)
Jurassic World (2015), directed by Colin Trevorrow, introduces the new leads. Owen Grady, played by Chris Pratt, is a former Navy animal behaviorist who trains a pack of Velociraptors. Claire Dearing, played by Bryce Dallas Howard, runs the park and is the aunt of Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins). Vic Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio), the security chief, wants to use the raptors as military weapons and is killed when his plan collapses. Claire's assistant Zara (Katie McGrath) dies in the pterosaur attack. The raptor Blue helps the old Tyrannosaurus rex fight the Indominus rex, and Wong returns as Henry Wu.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), directed by J. A. Bayona, adds Franklin Webb (Justice Smith) and Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda), who saves Blue with a transfusion. The villain is Eli Mills (Rafe Spall), who works for Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), kills him and plans a secret auction of the dinosaurs. Lockwood's granddaughter Maisie Lockwood, played by Isabella Sermon, turns out to be a clone of his dead daughter, and she chooses to open the doors and free the animals. Mills is killed by the Tyrannosaurus, and Malcolm appears at a government hearing to say people must now live alongside the dinosaurs.
Jurassic World Dominion (2022), directed by Colin Trevorrow, is the film where the two casts meet. Sattler, Grant and Malcolm return alongside Owen and Claire. Malcolm now works for Biosyn Genetics, whose CEO Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott) has made Wu modify locusts to control the world's food supply. Dodgson is killed by a Dilophosaurus. Newcomers include Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise), Ramsay Cole (Mamoudou Athie) and Barry Sembène (Omar Sy), whose raid on a Malta black market turns into chaos. Beta, the young raptor Blue brings to the cabin, is taken along with Maisie, and Ellie and Alan repair their relationship by the end.
Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards, starts fresh with a new team. Zora Bennett, played by Scarlett Johansson, is a former covert operative hired by pharmaceutical executive Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend). She recruits paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and boat captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali). The shipwrecked Delgado family, Reuben (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda), is rescued by Zora's team, and the two groups meet again at the old InGen complex. Mercenary Bobby Atwater (Ed Skrein) dies in the Mosasaurus attack, Nina (Philippine Velge) dies later, and Krebs is killed by the Distortus rex. Duncan appears to sacrifice himself with a flare, but a later shot shows he survived. Trade coverage says he was originally meant to die and the studio asked for footage of him surviving.
Which Jurassic Park Characters Died?
Named characters die in every main film except Jurassic Park III, where the Spinosaurus wrecks the plane and kills some of the party. The 1993 film loses Robert Muldoon, Gennaro and Nedry, The Lost World loses Ludlow, Jurassic World loses Hoskins and Zara, Fallen Kingdom loses Lockwood and Mills, Dominion loses Dodgson, and Rebirth loses Atwater, Nina and Krebs. The Tyrannosaurus is responsible for two of those deaths, Ludlow and Mills, one in each trilogy. Tim Murphy and Lex Murphy, by contrast, both survive the original film and the helicopter ride off the island.
Who Are the Female Jurassic Park Characters?
The female leads include Ellie Sattler, Lex Murphy, Sarah Harding, Kelly Curtis, Amanda Kirby, Claire Dearing, Zia Rodriguez, Maisie Lockwood, Kayla Watts and Zora Bennett. Ellie and Claire have the most credits among them, three films each: Ellie in the original film, Jurassic Park III (credited) and Dominion, and Claire in Jurassic World, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion. Zara and Nina are among the women who die, while Teresa Delgado survives after Zora's team rescues the family.
How the Characters Connect Across the Saga
The saga reuses a handful of faces on purpose, and the pattern is easy to see once you line the films up. Malcolm and Wu are credited in four of the seven films, Grant in three, and Hammond in the first two. Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards also return as Tim and Lex in The Lost World credits, though only briefly in the story. Each trilogy also pairs an expert hero with a corporate or criminal villain, from Nedry and Ludlow to Hoskins, Mills, Dodgson and Krebs. In my opinion, that is why the heroes feel interchangeable across eras while the villains change with the decade's anxieties (an editorial reading, not a studio statement). For the full story in sequence, see the jurassic park timeline, and for the animals themselves, the jurassic park dinosaurs page and Isla Nublar.
The next film is still in development. TheWrap reports that Gareth Edwards will not direct it and that Johansson, Ali and Bailey are expected to return, but no release date has been confirmed. The next jurassic world movie page tracks the status, and the jurassic park movies hub lets you pick any film and meet these characters in order.
