Galadriel Lord of the Rings: Who She Is and Who Plays Her
Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings is the elf Frodo meets in Lothlorien, played by actress Cate Blanchett in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002). She warns Frodo that the Ring will test the Fellowship, and in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) she helps rescue Gandalf from Dol Guldur.
Who Plays Galadriel?
Who Is Galadriel in Lord of the Rings?
Galadriel is the elf the Fellowship meets in Lothlorien, where the company rests after the mines of Moria, and Cate Blanchett plays her in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), directed by Peter Jackson, and in The Two Towers (2002). She is credited simply as Galadriel and billed 13th in each film. So, if you are searching for the Galadriel Lord of the Rings actress, that is the answer for the first two films of the trilogy.
She is also a figure in the Hobbit trilogy. In The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), she joins Elrond and Saruman to rescue Gandalf from Dol Guldur and to drive Sauron away. Where she sits in the wider story is covered on the Lord of the Rings timeline, and the full film list is on the Lord of the Rings movies hub.
What marks her out in the films is warning, not combat. She tells Frodo that the Ring will test every member of the company, and the film proves her right within the same act when Boromir tries to seize it. That makes her one of the few characters who sees the cost of the quest before it is paid.
The Ring she speaks of is the One Ring, the master Ring that Sauron made to dominate the other Rings of Power. In Tolkien's books, which the films adapt, Galadriel belongs to the Noldor, one of the elven peoples, and is among the oldest figures in Middle-earth, so her calm in Lothlorien reflects a very long memory of Sauron's work. The films themselves are less explicit about her origins, and they keep her on screen only briefly, which is why her few scenes carry so much weight.

Galadriel's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Galadriel's arc runs through three films: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. She first appears in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), directed by Peter Jackson, when the Fellowship reaches Lothlorien after losing Gandalf to the Balrog. There she warns Frodo that the Ring will test them, and her warning proves right when Boromir tries to seize it and Frodo flees.
Blanchett is credited again in The Two Towers (2002), but the story follows the broken Fellowship, with Frodo and Sam heading for Mordor and Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli riding into Rohan, so her presence is lighter there.
Her clearest later role comes in The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). Galadriel, Elrond and Saruman rescue Gandalf from Dol Guldur and drive Sauron away, while the armies gather at the Lonely Mountain far to the north.
Galadriel's Allies, Family and Husband
Galadriel's closest ties in the films are to Elrond and to the wizards who work against Sauron. In The Battle of the Five Armies she acts together with Elrond and Saruman to free Gandalf from Dol Guldur, which shows Elrond as her ally in that scene. Elrond is also the elf who presides over the council in Rivendell in The Fellowship of the Ring, so the two are on the same side of the war from the first film to the last.
Her link to Gandalf is the key one in the Hobbit trilogy, since she is one of the three who rescue him from his prison and face Sauron. Saruman stands beside her in that rescue, yet The Fellowship of the Ring has already shown him siding with Sauron and holding Gandalf prisoner, so the pairing has an uneasy edge when the two films are watched back to back. Viewers who move from the Hobbit films to the trilogy in chronological order meet the rescue first, and the later betrayal then reads as a reversal.
Her link to Frodo Baggins is one of warning. She tells him the Ring will test the Fellowship, and she treats it as a danger. Her link to Sauron comes through the rescue, where she helps drive him away from Dol Guldur.
On the husband question, the films do not show her married, and they present Elrond as an ally, not a spouse. Tolkien's books give her a different husband, but the films never put him on screen.
What Happens to Galadriel?Spoilers
Galadriel's most decisive act in the films is the Dol Guldur rescue, where she helps drive Sauron away in The Battle of the Five Armies. In The Fellowship of the Ring her warning to Frodo is followed by the breaking of the Fellowship, as Boromir tries to seize the Ring and later dies defending Merry and Pippin.
The trilogy closes in The Return of the King (2003) with the Ring destroyed at Mount Doom, Mordor collapsing and Aragorn crowned king. Frodo then leaves Middle-earth by ship for the Undying Lands with Gandalf, Bilbo and the elves. The films do not give Galadriel a separate death or farewell scene in the material we have covered, and the summaries of the three trilogy films do not state her fate, so any claim about it beyond her Dol Guldur appearance would be a guess.
Sauron's defeat is the answer to the question of whether she turns dark: across all six films she stands against him, and nothing in them shows her serving him. For the order in which these events fall, see the Lord of the Rings movies in order guide.
Galadriel's Best Moments, Ranked by Impact
In my opinion, her best moment is the warning to the Fellowship in Lothlorien. It is quiet, and it matters because she says out loud that the Ring will test them, and then the film proves it in the next act with Boromir. It could be argued that this is the first film's most efficient piece of foreshadowing, and the contrast with Gandalf's fall in Moria just before it is deliberate: the company has lost its guide, and the first thing it hears in the rest is that the danger is not over.
I also think the scene gains by comparison. Boromir reaches for the Ring and fails, while later in The Two Towers Faramir holds it in his grasp and lets the hobbits go. Her warning sets up both temptations, so she works as the series' first statement of its main rule, that the Ring tests everyone who comes near it.
Perhaps the second best is the Dol Guldur rescue in The Battle of the Five Armies. It is a different register, a set piece in which she acts with Elrond and Saruman to free Gandalf and drive Sauron away. Seen next to the trilogy, it is the one place where the films let her act directly against the Dark Lord, and it is also the moment where Saruman is still on the right side, which gives the scene a sad edge for anyone who has seen The Two Towers.
That being said, I would still pick the Lothlorien scene first, because a single warning tells you more about her than the rescue does. If you want her against the Rings of Power series on Prime Video, which tells a different version of her story, the hub and timeline pages explain how it relates to the films.
