Who Plays Teresa Agnes?

Who Is Teresa in Maze Runner?

Teresa Agnes is the girl who arrives in the Glade the day after Thomas spends a night in the maze, and Kaya Scodelario plays her in all three films. She is billed second in each, directly behind Dylan O'Brien as Thomas, which shows how central she is to the trilogy even when the plot keeps her at the edge of the group.

In The Maze Runner (2014), directed by Wes Ball, the lift that delivers every newcomer to the Glade has never carried a girl before. Teresa steps out with a note saying she is the last one. That detail unsettles the boys, who have built a small society under their leader Alby and live inside walls that open onto a giant maze by day and close at night.

The credits list her as Teresa Agnes in all three films, and the character has no other name. If you are searching for the real name behind the performance, the actress is Kaya Scodelario. Her co-stars in the trilogy include Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt, Ki Hong Lee as Minho, Will Poulter as Gally and Patricia Clarkson as Ava Paige. What Happens With Teresa in Maze Runner? Her Story Across Three FilmsSpoilers

Teresa moves from newcomer to Glader to WCKD ally across the trilogy, and the turn happens in the middle film. Here is the sequence, film by film.

The Maze Runner (2014). After she arrives, Thomas notices a pattern in the maze and works out a possible route to the exit. The boys fight Grievers, and the group tries to run the maze at night. Several boys die. Thomas and Minho find a way to kill a Griever and examine it, and they reach a doorway in the maze wall that leads into a lab full of dead scientists. A recorded message from the organization WCKD says the boys were part of a test while a deadly disease spread across the world. Gally shoots Chuck and Minho kills Gally. Teresa is among the survivors that armed soldiers rescue by helicopter, though the ending hints that the rescue may not be what it seems.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015). The survivors are taken in by Janson, who says his facility protects them from the Cranks, people ruined by a deadly infection. Thomas learns that the place belongs to WCKD and that Ava Paige is alive. The group escapes into the Scorch, a burned desert, loses Winston to the infection, and meets Brenda and Jorge. They reach the Right Arm, a resistance group in the mountains. Teresa secretly passes the camp's location to WCKD, which then raids the camp and captures several Immunes, including Minho, Aris and Sonya. Mary Cooper is killed.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018). Teresa now works with WCKD. Thomas and Gally use her to reach WCKD headquarters, where the Immune children are held, while Thomas, Newt and Frypan are in the Last City to rescue Minho. By the finale she stands firmly on the WCKD side of the story, and that is where her arc ends.

Teresa's Relationships: Thomas, Newt, Brenda and WCKD

Teresa's most important relationship is with Thomas, and her work for WCKD is what tests it. The Right Arm betrayal in The Scorch Trials is the point where the two end up on opposite sides.

Thomas. The two sit at the center of the trilogy. In The Death Cure, Thomas and Gally use Teresa to get to WCKD headquarters, so even with the two on opposite sides, he still needs her. On the roof of the burning headquarters, she is the one who removes his blood so that it can be used to make a cure.

Newt. In The Death Cure Newt travels with Thomas and Frypan to the Last City to get Minho back, and he is infected with the Flare and begins to lose control. You can read more on Newt in Maze Runner.

Brenda. Brenda and Jorge are two locals the Gladers meet while crossing the Scorch, before the group reaches the Right Arm camp whose location Teresa secretly passes to WCKD. See Brenda in Maze Runner for her arc.

WCKD. WCKD is the organization behind the maze, and the facility where Janson shelters the Gladers in The Scorch Trials belongs to it. The Last City is its home base. Ava Paige is alive in The Scorch Trials, and in The Death Cure Janson kills her.

Does Teresa Die in Maze Runner?Spoilers

Yes, Teresa dies in Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), the last film of the trilogy, when she plunges from the collapsing WCKD headquarters.

Her final act comes on the roof of the burning building, where she draws out Thomas's blood so that WCKD's cure can be made. A Berg arrives to lift the group away, but the structure gives way beneath her before she can board, and she falls. The others get clear and eventually settle on a safe island, and it is there that Thomas finds the note Newt left in his pendant, asking him to look after everyone.

Since the trilogy ends with this film, nothing is left open for her afterward. A new Maze Runner film is in development at 20th Century Studios, according to TheWrap on May 3, 2024, described as a reboot that continues the original trilogy, and no release date has been announced. TheWrap names no cast, so any talk of Teresa returning is speculation. For the latest, see the new Maze Runner movie page.

Teresa's Best Moments in the Films (Opinion)

In my opinion, Teresa's best moments are the ones where the films let her decisions carry the plot. Here are three, and why they work.

Her arrival in the lift. A lift that has never carried a girl, and a note saying she is the last one, gives The Maze Runner a jolt in the middle of a story that has mostly been about rules and routine. It could be argued that the film never quite pays this off, but as staging it makes the Glade feel like an experiment seen from the outside.

Passing on the Right Arm location. In The Scorch Trials Teresa secretly passes the camp's location to WCKD, and her betrayal is exposed at the end of the film, after the raid and the captured Immunes. Letting the consequences reveal the act is the strongest choice the trilogy makes with her, because the damage is much larger than the deed. Perhaps the weakness is that the film gives us little of her reasoning.

The roof in The Death Cure. Removing Thomas's blood and then falling when the building collapses gives her a finale that joins both halves of her story: the Glader Thomas once knew and the operative working with WCKD. Compared with Newt's death earlier in the same film, where he stabs himself after begging Thomas to end his life, hers is loud and mechanical, and I think it is the less moving of the two. That being said, it gives the trilogy a clear ending for the character.
