Maze Runner Cast and Crew: Actors, Characters and Director

The main Maze Runner cast is Dylan O'Brien as Thomas, Kaya Scodelario as Teresa Agnes, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Newt and Ki Hong Lee as Minho. O'Brien is billed first in The Maze Runner (2014), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018), and Scodelario and Brodie-Sangster hold the second and third billing slots in each of them. Credit positions run from 1 for the top billed actor, and "none" means the actor sits outside the top fifteen billed in that film. That separates the people who carry the whole saga from those who belong to a single chapter.

The first film, directed by Wes Ball, builds its Glade community around Aml Ameen as Alby, Will Poulter as Gally, Blake Cooper as Chuck and Dexter Darden as Frypan, with Ki Hong Lee as the runner Minho. Patricia Clarkson plays Ava Paige, and Jacob Latimore (Jeff), Chris Sheffield (Ben), Joe Adler (Zart), Randall D. Cunningham (Clint) and Alexander Flores (Winston) fill out the boys of the Glade. Don McManus appears as the Masked Man. Of the young Gladers, only Darden, Flores and the four leads carry into the sequel's top billing.

The Scorch Trials moves the story into the desert and widens the ensemble. Giancarlo Esposito joins as Jorge and Rosa Salazar as Brenda, with Aidan Gillen as Janson, Barry Pepper as Vince, Nathalie Emmanuel as Harriet, Jacob Lofland as Aris Jones, Lili Taylor as Mary Cooper and Alan Tudyk as Blondie. Will Poulter is not among the top fifteen billed cast of this film.

The Death Cure brings Poulter back as Gally and adds Walton Goggins as Lawrence and Katherine McNamara as Sonya. Esposito, Salazar, Gillen, Pepper, Emmanuel and Lofland all return from the second film, while Clarkson's Ava Paige is billed tenth. Wes Ball directed all three Maze Runner movies: The Maze Runner (2014), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015) and Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018). That means the maze, the Scorch and the Last City share one director from start to finish.

The crew attached to a new Maze Runner film is limited to what trade reports say. TheWrap reported on May 3, 2024 that 20th Century Studios is developing a reboot described as a continuation of the original trilogy, with Jack Paglen in talks to write. The same report names Wes Ball as a producer rather than the director, alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Lee Stollman, Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen. That was not an official studio announcement, and no cast, filming dates or release date have been confirmed. The latest status sits with the new maze runner movie coverage.

Six actors appear in the top fifteen billed cast of all three films: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, Dexter Darden and Patricia Clarkson. No role was recast, since every character keeps the same actor in every film where the character appears. In my opinion, that continuity is one of the saga's quiet strengths, because a story about people who have lost their memories would have been harder to follow with changing faces.

The exceptions are about who is present, not who is replaced. Will Poulter's Gally is in the first and third films but not among the top fifteen billed in the second, and it could be argued that his return gives The Death Cure a link back to the Glade that the sequel had left behind. Rosa Salazar and Giancarlo Esposito arrive in The Scorch Trials as Brenda and Jorge and stay for the finale, which makes them the saga's main late additions. Walton Goggins and Katherine McNamara are new to the top fifteen in The Death Cure.

By contrast, Aml Ameen (Alby), Blake Cooper (Chuck) and Jacob Latimore (Jeff) are billed only in the first film, while Alexander Flores (Winston) is in the top fifteen of the first two. That being said, billing cannot tell us how small any later appearances are, so treat these actors as absent from the top billing rather than absent from the story.

For a possible new film, nobody is confirmed. Perhaps the original leads will be involved, but no trade report names a single actor, so any casting talk should be read as speculation until 20th Century Studios says otherwise.
