What Is Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials About?

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, often searched as Maze Runner 2, is the sequel in which the surviving Gladers get out of the maze and discover that the people who rescued them are not what they seem. They are taken to a walled facility run by a man named Janson, who tells them they are being protected from the Cranks, people ruined by a deadly infection.

Thomas, played by Dylan O'Brien, does not trust the arrangement for long. He starts to suspect that the facility belongs to WCKD, the group behind the maze. That suspicion becomes a decision to run, and the film follows him and his friends out of the compound and into the Scorch, a burned and ruined desert.

The first film was a story about a closed space with fixed rules. This one is a story about open ground, with no walls to explain what is safe. If you have not seen the earlier film, the Maze Runner movies in order guide shows where to begin.

What Is the Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Soundtrack and Score?

John Paesano composed the score for Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), and the album, titled "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," was released by Sony Classical on September 11, 2015. It is a score album with 21 tracks, and it arrived about a week before the film's reported US theatrical release on September 18, 2015.

What does that album cover? Director Wes Ball's sequel runs 131 minutes and follows Thomas and the surviving Gladers from the walled facility run by Janson out into the burned desert known as the Scorch. The Sony Classical release collects Paesano's orchestral work for that journey in one album, so a listener can follow the film's music without sitting through the whole picture again.

Is there a list of featured songs? Paesano is the only composer credited on the album, and the release is a score collection rather than a compilation of licensed tracks. For anyone looking for a song to track down, the album is the place to start, and it is the one release that carries the sequel's music.

If you want to see how the music is handled across the whole series, the Maze Runner soundtrack page covers it film by film.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Summary (Full Plot)Spoilers

In the full plot of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Thomas escapes WCKD's facility, crosses the Scorch and loses several friends to a WCKD raid on the Right Arm camp. It runs in four stages: the facility, the escape, the desert crossing and the Right Arm camp.

Inside the facility, Thomas discovers that the place belongs to WCKD and that Ava Paige, played by Patricia Clarkson, is still alive. He and his friends flee the compound and head out into the Scorch, a harsh desert wasteland.

During the crossing the group loses Winston to the infection. They then meet two locals, Brenda and Jorge, and travel on with them toward the mountains.

There they reach the Right Arm, a resistance group. Teresa, however, secretly passes the camp's location to WCKD. WCKD then attacks the camp and captures several Immunes, including Minho, Aris and Sonya, and Mary Cooper is killed in the raid. The film closes with Thomas vowing to kill Paige and get his captured friends back.

When Was Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Released?

The release of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials staggered across three weeks in 2015, starting abroad. Select international territories opened it on September 9, the UK and Australia followed on September 10 (TMDB lists both dates), and US theaters got it on September 18, according to Box Office Mojo.

The film reached theaters without a confirmed premiere event: no date, city or venue has been published for one.

Certifications vary by market. It carries PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia, so younger UK viewers need an adult with them in theaters.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials turns an escape story into a war story: the Right Arm camp is destroyed, Minho, Aris and Sonya are taken, and Thomas decides to hunt down Ava Paige.

What actually happens? WCKD raids the camp after Teresa secretly passes its location along. Mary Cooper dies in the attack, and Teresa's betrayal is exposed. Thomas then resolves to kill Paige and free the captives.

What was the point of Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials? In my opinion, it exists to move the series from survival to confrontation. The first film, directed like this one by Wes Ball, asks how to get out of a sealed maze, while this one asks who built it and why the Immunes are being collected. By the final scene those questions have a name, WCKD, and a target, Paige.

Teresa is the hinge. It could be argued that her betrayal is the most important plot beat in the film, because it leads directly to the raid on the Right Arm camp and the capture of Minho, Aris and Sonya. The film spends its middle stretch building trust: Brenda and Jorge guide the group across the Scorch, and the Right Arm offers the first real shelter since the Glade. The raid takes that shelter away in a single night, and, paradoxically, the only person who could have prevented it is the one Thomas trusted most.

The film also sets up a pattern of loss. Winston is lost to the infection during the desert crossing, Mary Cooper dies in the raid, and three Immunes are carried off. In the 2014 original the group suffered its casualties inside the maze, with fixed rules to blame. Here the damage comes from people making choices, which is a harder kind of threat to plan around. That being said, the film never lets Thomas stop to grieve, and his vow against Paige is the only response it gives him.

Perhaps the cleanest way to read the ending is as a handoff. In Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Minho is a WCKD captive being used in research, and Thomas, Newt and Frypan head for the Last City to get him back. Gally, thought dead, turns up to help them inside, and Teresa, now working with WCKD, becomes a key figure in whether the plan can work. That rescue is the direct result of the final minutes here.

By comparison, the first film ends on an exit and this one ends on a promise. At 131 minutes it sits between the 113 minute original and the 143 minute finale, and its ending is the point where the trilogy stops being a puzzle and becomes a pursuit.

The party sequence was shot at the Gertrude Zachary Mansion in downtown Albuquerque.
