What Is The Maze Runner 2014 About?

In The Maze Runner 2014, a boy named Thomas rides a rattling metal lift upward into daylight, remembering nothing but his own first name. He steps out into the Glade, an open stretch of farmland where a community of teenage boys, all stripped of their pasts, has built a life behind towering stone walls. It begins the story that carries on in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Maze Runner: The Death Cure.

Every morning the huge gates slide open onto a vast stone labyrinth, and every evening they close again. The boys have lived this way for three years, and a team of runners charts the corridors each day in the hope of finding a way out.

Only the runners may go in, since the walls rearrange themselves overnight and monstrous creatures called Grievers prowl the passages after dark. Thomas is restless and inquisitive, so the strict routine of the place rubs against his instinct to look beyond it. In my opinion, that tension is the heart of the film: a sealed society, a puzzle nobody has cracked, and one newcomer who keeps asking why.

If you are starting the series, this is the right place to begin, since it is first in both release order and chronological order. For how all three films connect, see maze runner movies in order.

The Maze Runner Soundtrack and Score

John Paesano composed the score for The Maze Runner (2014), and the music was released as "The Maze Runner (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" on Sony Classical on September 12, 2014. The album runs to 21 tracks and is a score album, so it collects the composed music written for the film.

That raises the question most people ask about this film: what songs are in The Maze Runner? No songs are credited to it, which means the music identity of the film rests on Paesano's score alone. It accompanies a story that moves between the farmland of the Glade and the shifting stone corridors of the maze, and the album is the place to hear that work on its own.

Paesano went on to score all three films in the series, so the sound of the first film carries through to the sequels. If you want the full picture of how the music develops from one film to the next, the series-wide page covers every album and composer credit.

The series-wide soundtrack is covered at Maze Runner soundtrack.

The Maze Runner Plot Summary: Full StorySpoilers

The full plot of The Maze Runner follows Thomas from his arrival in the Glade to the survivors' escape and rescue, and it ends with more questions than answers. Thomas arrives in the Glade, where the boys have built a small society under their leader Alby. He learns that only runners may enter the maze, because the walls shift each night and Grievers hunt there after dark. He bonds with the young Chuck and clashes with the hostile Gally.

Against the rules, Thomas follows Alby and the runner Minho into the maze. Alby is hurt, and Thomas protects him through the night.

The next day a girl named Teresa arrives in the lift, which has never carried a girl before. She carries a note saying she is the last one to arrive. Thomas notices a pattern in the maze and works out a possible route, and the boys fight Grievers as the group tries to run the maze at night to reach the exit he has spotted.

Several boys die during that run. Thomas and Minho find a way to kill a Griever and examine it. They then reach a doorway in the maze wall and escape through it into a lab full of dead scientists. A recorded message from the organization WCKD explains that the boys were part of a test while a deadly disease spread across the world.

Gally, who has turned on the group, shoots Chuck, and Minho kills Gally. Armed soldiers then rescue the survivors by helicopter, though the rest of the story is left unresolved.

The Maze Runner Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of The Maze Runner reveals that the maze was an experiment run by WCKD, and that the rescue at the end may not be the safe exit it appears to be. After Thomas, Teresa and the other survivors get out, a recorded message in the lab explains that the boys were part of a test while a deadly disease spread across the world. The group has lost Chuck and others along the way, and soldiers take the survivors away by helicopter.

Why does this matter? Because the film answers the question of what the maze is and refuses to say who the people in charge really are. In my opinion, the strongest choice is that the escape does not feel like a victory. The doorway leads to a room of dead scientists, not to open sky, so the audience is warned early that the rescue should not be trusted.

It could be argued that the deaths of Chuck and the confrontation with Gally close the Glade's story from within. Gally turns on the group and shoots Chuck, and Minho kills Gally, so the community that Alby built breaks apart from inside as well as from outside the walls.

The sequel confirms the suspicion. In The Scorch Trials, the survivors are taken to a facility run by a man named Janson, who says he is protecting them from the Cranks. Thomas learns that the facility belongs to WCKD and that Ava Paige is still alive, so the rescuers were working for the same organization behind the maze. The Maze Runner timeline places each film in order, WCKD in Maze Runner covers the organization, and Maze Runner books vs movies sets out the differences from the novels.

Where Was The Maze Runner Filmed?

The Maze Runner was filmed in Louisiana. The Glade and the outdoor scenes were shot on a farm in St. Francisville, about an hour from Baton Rouge, and the maze itself was built on a stage in a former Sam's Club store in Baton Rouge.

The stage measured 160 by 80 feet, and the practical maze walls were built 16 feet tall. Visual effects extended them to about 100 feet in post production, so what you see on screen is a physical corridor with a digital skyline. The production designer was Marc Fisichella.

The farm location came with a hazard. A snake wrangler removed about 25 venomous and 35 non venomous snakes from it, including a 5 foot rattler.
