Tyson is a cyclops who turns out to be Percy Jackson's half-brother, and he is one of the newcomers in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013), directed by Thor Freudenthal. Tyson's Story in Sea of MonstersSpoilers
Tyson's story begins when Percy meets him and learns that the cyclops is his half-brother. At that point Percy is already dealing with campers who sneer at him as a one quest wonder, and Thalia's pine tree, which shields the camp, is dying from Luke's poison. When a Colchis bull attacks the camp, the stakes become obvious, and Annabeth works out that the Golden Fleece could heal the tree.
Mr. D hands the official quest to Clarisse rather than to Percy, but Percy sets out anyway with Annabeth, Grover and Tyson. The group is thrown out of a cab in Washington, D.C., by the Graeae, and Luke's allies then kidnap Grover. Hermes helps them find Luke's yacht, the Andromeda, where they are held prisoner before they escape and are swallowed by the monster Charybdis. They blast their way out and reach Florida.
There they find the Fleece with the cyclops Polyphemus, but Luke ambushes them and takes it. Tyson is shot in the fight. After Percy defeats Luke and locks Kronos away again, the story returns to camp, where Clarisse places the Fleece on the tree. Does Tyson Die in Percy Jackson?Spoilers
No, Tyson does not die in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. He is shot when Luke ambushes the group in Florida and takes the Golden Fleece, but he survives.
That moment matters because the film keeps its loss and revival for another character. Annabeth is killed by the Manticore and then revived by the Fleece, and Thalia returns to life when Clarisse places the Fleece on the tree. The film ends with Percy wondering whether the prophecy refers to Thalia rather than to him, and no third film was ever made, so Tyson's story on screen stops there.
If you are asking what came next, the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a separate television adaptation, not a film. Its third season, adapting The Titan's Curse, premieres on November 20, 2026, according to Disney's press site. Best Tyson Moments and Why He Matters
In my opinion, Tyson is the heart of Sea of Monsters, because he gives Percy a brother to travel with in a film that is otherwise a chase from one monster to the next. The big set pieces include the cab ride in Washington, D.C., with the Graeae, the escape from the Andromeda and the blast out of Charybdis, and Tyson is with the group for all of it.
It could be argued that the Florida scene with Polyphemus is his most telling one, because Tyson is a cyclops and the group finds the Fleece with another cyclops. He is then shot in Luke's ambush and survives, which keeps him in the story to the end.
Who is stronger, Tyson or Percy? The films never stage a contest, so this is a judgment call. Percy defeats Luke and locks Kronos away, while Tyson survives a shot, so it could be argued that they are strong in different ways. If you are watching with younger children, this is the film to pick for sibling themes, and the percy jackson cast page shows who else to look for.
