What Is the Plot of Saw 5?

The plot of Saw 5 follows two threads at once: an investigation into whether Detective Mark Hoffman is hiding a connection to the Jigsaw killings, and a game in which five strangers must pass a run of tests to survive.

The film opens with Hoffman being hailed as a hero. A convicted murderer named Seth has just died in a deadly pendulum trap, and the official line is that the Jigsaw case is closed. Agent Peter Strahm (played by Scott Patterson) has survived a trap of his own, and he does not trust a story that tidy. He starts studying the evidence and finds signs that point back to Hoffman.

At the same time, five strangers named Ashley, Brit, Charles, Luba and Mallick wake up in a grim facility and learn that they must pass a series of tests to live. If you have watched Saw IV (2007), directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, the setting will feel familiar, since that film opens with a tape meant for Hoffman saying the games are not over. Saw V picks up the consequences of that message.

What Songs Are in Saw V?

Charlie Clouser composed the score for Saw V (2008), directed by David Hackl, and the film's soundtrack album, "Saw V", was released by Warner Bros. Records on October 21, 2008, with 15 tracks. Clouser has scored every Saw film, so the series keeps the same industrial, percussive sound from one entry to the next.

The album and the film also carry a run of songs from metal and industrial acts. The artists and titles credited are:

  • "True Believer" by Testament
  • "Death and Destruction (remix)" by Ministry
  • "What's Next (The Blood & Sand mix)" by Filter
  • "Thanks Again, Again" by The Almighty
  • "The Banishment" by Prong
  • "The Dawning of Doom" by Die Krupps
  • "Power Player" by Clutch
  • "Ugli" by Skinny Puppy
  • "Strangers" by William Control
  • "Unlaced" by Emilie Autumn
  • "Blood and Music" by Fixmer / McCarthy
  • "Wizard of Sextown" by Revolting Cocks

No source names the scene where any of these songs plays, and none is documented as written specifically for the film. The lineup leans on the same heavy, abrasive corner of the music world that the series has favored since its early sequels.

For how the music changes across the series, see the Saw soundtrack.

Saw 5 Plot Explained: Full SynopsisSpoilers

The full plot of Saw 5 reveals that Hoffman is the man carrying on Jigsaw's work, and that he escapes the film with Agent Strahm taking the blame.

Seth, the convicted killer, dies in the pendulum trap at the start, and Hoffman is praised for closing the case. Strahm distrusts that conclusion. He goes through the evidence, becomes convinced that Hoffman was involved, and starts digging into Hoffman's past.

The five strangers, Ashley, Brit, Charles, Luba and Mallick, are forced through a run of rooms that punish selfishness. The rooms are built so that anyone who tries to save only themselves is hurt, and several of the group die in the early ones. The survivors only get further when they cooperate, which is the lesson the film keeps returning to.

Flashbacks fill in Hoffman's side. They show that John Kramer, the original Jigsaw (see John Kramer in Saw), forced Hoffman to take part in the games after Kramer learned that Hoffman had killed Seth. In other words, Hoffman did not volunteer. He was recruited under pressure.

In the last room, the two survivors, Brit and Mallick, learn that the whole group shared a link to a deadly fire. They have to work together to supply the blood needed to open the final door, and Mallick dies in the process.

Meanwhile, Hoffman plants evidence that frames Strahm as Jigsaw's successor. Strahm tracks Hoffman down and locks him in a glass box, but Strahm is then caught in a room with closing walls. Hoffman watches from the box as Strahm is crushed, and Hoffman is left as the keeper of Jigsaw's legacy. The Saw timeline places this film directly after Saw IV in story order.

When Was Saw 5 Released?

Saw 5 reached US theaters on October 24, 2008, the late October slot the earlier sequels had also used.

The UK release was the same day, October 24, 2008, and Australia followed a day earlier, on October 23, 2008. These dates are as reported by The Numbers and TMDB rather than announced by the studio.

The film opened in the US with about $30 million, according to Box Office Mojo. It finished with $56.7 million domestic and $57.1 million international, for roughly $114 million worldwide on a $10.8 million budget. The Saw box office page shows how each film compares.

The film is rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and R 18+ in Australia. It runs 95 minutes.

Saw 5 Ending Explained: What Is the Twist?Spoilers

The twist of Saw 5 is that Hoffman is the killer carrying on Jigsaw's work, and that by the final scene he has made Agent Strahm the scapegoat.

What actually happens? Strahm locks Hoffman in a glass box, but he is then caught in the closing room and crushed while Hoffman watches. Hoffman escapes the box and is free to carry on the work unsuspected, because the evidence he planted leaves Strahm with the blame as the supposed successor. Strahm is the one man who saw through the story, and the film removes him at the exact moment he is proved right. That is a neat piece of structure, and a bleak one.

The five stranger game and the investigation are linked by a theme as much as by plot. The strangers survive only if they cooperate, while Strahm and Hoffman are two men who will not. In my opinion, that contrast is the most interesting idea in the film, although it could be argued that it is stated more than it is shown.

The ending also settles who the killer is. Hoffman is not a copycat. He is a detective whom John Kramer pulled into the games, and the flashbacks present his involvement as forced. As such, Saw V works best as a bridge. It closes the Strahm storyline, confirms Hoffman as the series' living antagonist, and leaves Jill Tuck tied to Kramer's plans, which sets up Saw VI.

To see how this fits the bigger picture, the Saw timeline explained lays out the order, and the Saw traps cover the devices.

Where Was Saw 5 Filmed?

Saw V has no publicly confirmed filming location, since neither the studio nor the trade press has named one.

The department heads are known: David A. Armstrong shot the film and Tony Lanni designed it. Saw II and Saw IV were filmed in Toronto, but no source places Saw V there, so any claim about its sets should wait for an official statement.
