What Is Saw 6 About?

Saw VI is about Detective Mark Hoffman keeping Jigsaw's work alive while an insurance executive is put through games built around his company's habit of denying medical coverage. The film opens with two predatory lenders, Eddie and Simone, who wake in a deadly trap where one of them must pay with their own body to survive.

Hoffman, who now carries on the killer's work, covers his tracks by planting the fingerprints of the dead FBI agent Strahm at the scene. That keeps the investigation pointed at a man who can no longer answer questions. William Easton, played by Peter Outerbridge, is then pulled into a series of tests that mirror the way his firm decides who gets treatment and who does not. Meanwhile, FBI agents Erickson and Perez start to look more closely at the evidence.

If you are new to the series, Saw VI follows saw 5 in release order, and the full sequence is laid out in the saw movies in order guide.

What Songs Are in Saw VI? Soundtrack and Score

Charlie Clouser composed the score for Saw VI (2009), directed by Kevin Greutert, and the soundtrack album "Saw VI" was released on October 20, 2009, with 21 tracks. Clouser also scored every other film in the series, so the electronic and industrial sound of Saw VI belongs to the same musical line that began with Saw (2004).

The songs credited to the film come mostly from metal and industrial bands, which suits a saga that has always paired its traps with heavy music. The featured songs are:

  • "In Ashes They Shall Reap" by Hatebreed
  • "Dark Horse" by Converge
  • "Cut Throat" by Kittie
  • "The Sinatra" by My My Misfire
  • "The Last Goodbye" by Lacuna Coil
  • "Your Soul Is Mine" by Mushroomhead
  • "Warpath" by Chimaira
  • "Genocide (Saw VI remix)" by Suicide Silence
  • "Roman Holiday" by Every Time I Die
  • "Never Known" by Nitzer Ebb
  • "Still I Rise (Saw VI remix)" by Shadows Fall
  • "Dead Again" by Type O Negative

Two of these, the Suicide Silence and Shadows Fall tracks, appear in versions titled as Saw VI remixes. No source names the scene where any of the songs plays, so none is placed here. For the music of the whole series, see the Saw soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Saw 6 Plot: Full SummarySpoilers

The Saw VI plot runs from a loan shark trap to an insurance boardroom and ends with Hoffman fighting his way out of a trap designed for him. Eddie and Simone are locked in head harnesses and forced to cut their own flesh. Eddie dies when Simone sacrifices her arm and the scale tips against him.

Hoffman, who escaped the trap that killed Agent Strahm, plants Strahm's fingerprints at the scene to keep the FBI chasing a dead man. William Easton is then put through a string of tests that mirror the way his firm rejects claims. Some of his employees die in traps, and on a rotating roundabout he can save only two of six staff members.

Agent Erickson notices odd details in Strahm's prints and confronts Hoffman. Hoffman kills Erickson, Agent Perez and a technician. Jill Tuck, the widow of John Kramer, then surprises Hoffman with a letter he once wrote to Amanda Young. She fits a modified reverse bear trap on his head, carrying out a plan from John's will.

William finds his sister Pamela in a cage room, where the relatives of a former client, Tara and her son Brent, are to decide his fate. Brent pulls a lever and William is killed by acid. Hoffman breaks his own wrist to free himself and escapes the trap with a badly torn cheek.

Saw 6 Release Date and Box Office

Saw VI opened in US theaters on October 23, 2009, with the UK release on the same day and Australia a day earlier on October 22, 2009, according to TMDB and Box Office Mojo. It was rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia.

The film took $27.7 million at the domestic box office and $40.5 million internationally, for $68 million worldwide on an $11 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. By comparison, saw 5 took in far more worldwide the year before, so Saw VI fell sharply. It is the lowest worldwide total among the nine main saga films, though it did return its budget several times over. For the series totals, see the saw box office page.

Trailers for the series are collected on the saw 11 trailer page.

Saw 6 Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The Saw 6 ending shows William losing his game and Hoffman surviving his, which means the film closes with Jigsaw's circle turning on the man who inherited his methods. William dies when Brent pulls the lever, so his test ends in failure. Hoffman escapes the reverse bear trap by breaking his own wrist and tearing his cheek.

Why did Jill do it? In my opinion, the film answers that through the letter. She arrives with a message Hoffman once wrote to Amanda Young, and she fits a modified reverse bear trap on him as part of a plan from John's will. That makes it a deliberate, planned act of judgment, and it shows Jill knew the shape of John's work well enough to use it against his successor.

Perhaps the neatest thing about the structure is how it uses William's game as a mirror. He is tested on who he chooses to save, and the roundabout, where he can rescue only two of six colleagues, tells you what Jigsaw thinks of his job. Hoffman gets no such moral test. He gets a trap he can only survive through injury, and he leaves wounded and hunted.

That setup carries straight into saw 3d, where Jill approaches Detective Matt Gibson and offers to give up Hoffman in return for protection. It could be argued that Saw VI is the point where the series stops being about Jigsaw's philosophy and becomes a chase between his former allies. For the bigger picture, the saw timeline explained page places this film among the others.

Where Was Saw 6 Filmed?

No filming location for Saw VI is on record. Saw 2 and saw 4 were both filmed in Toronto, but that cannot be assumed for this film.

Saw 6 Trivia

Saw VI was Kevin Greutert's directorial debut after he edited the first five films in the series. Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan wrote the script, returning after Saw IV and Saw V. Charlie Clouser composed the score again.

The reported production budget was $11 million. James Wan and Leigh Whannell are credited for the characters and as executive producers.

Greutert has said Lionsgate told him about a week before filming that the film would be converted to 3D after shooting. The plan was dropped due to time constraints, and the 3D release came a year later with saw 3d. The rest of the series is on the saw movies hub, and our verdicts live on the saw reviews page.

Facts

FAQs

What is Saw Six about?

Saw VI follows Detective Mark Hoffman, who continues Jigsaw's work while covering his tracks with the dead agent Strahm's fingerprints. Insurance executive William Easton is put through games that mirror his company's habit of denying medical coverage, and FBI agents Erickson and Perez begin to suspect Hoffman.

Did Jill know John was Jigsaw?

Yes, by Saw VI the film shows Jill Tuck, John Kramer's widow, as fully aware of his work. She confronts Hoffman with a letter he once wrote to Amanda Young and fits a modified reverse bear trap on his head, carrying out a plan from John's will.

Why did Jigsaw choose his victims?

In Saw VI the targets are people who profit from other people's desperation. Eddie and Simone are predatory lenders, and William Easton runs an insurance firm that rejects medical claims, so each test is built to mirror the choices the victim made.

Which Saw movie came after Saw 6?

Saw 3D came next, released in 2010 and directed by Kevin Greutert. It brings back Cary Elwes as Dr. Gordon and follows Hoffman as Jill Tuck tries to give him up to Detective Matt Gibson.

Is Saw 7 the last one?

No. Saw 3D is the seventh film in release order, and it was followed by Jigsaw in 2017, Spiral: From the Book of Saw in 2021 and Saw X in 2023. A further film, called Saw 11 by TheWrap, is in development with Mike P. Nelson directing, and it has no release date yet.
