Saw 4 Plot: What Is the Setup?

The setup of Saw 4 is that Jigsaw is already dead when the film begins, and doctors performing his autopsy find a small tape recorder inside his body. The tape is meant for Detective Hoffman and tells him that the games are not over. Police officer Rigg is then pulled into a new set of deadly tests, and investigators race to understand the clues and work out where the trail leads.

That opening matters because the series had spent three films building its story around John Kramer, the man behind the puzzles. Tobin Bell is still billed first, as Jigsaw / John, so the character remains central even though his body is on the table. How does a dead villain carry a film? Through the message on that tape recorder and through flashbacks that fill in how Kramer became the man behind the puzzles.

Rigg is the human center of the story. He is a tireless cop who cannot stop trying to save others, and the film uses that habit as the pressure point of its game. Lyriq Bent had already played Rigg in saw 2 and saw 3, so the character arrives with some history. Agents Strahm and Perez, played by Scott Patterson and Athena Karkanis, work the investigation on the other side of the story.

If you are new to the series, start with saw 2004 and read saw movies in order before you press play on this one. Saw IV leans on what came before it, and the setup above will make far more sense once you have seen the earlier films.

Saw IV Soundtrack and Score

Charlie Clouser composed the score for Saw IV (2007), and the album "Saw IV" was released on October 23, 2007 by Artists’ Addiction Records. It is a soundtrack album with 19 tracks.

What is the difference between the score and the songs? The score is the original instrumental music written to run under the scenes, while a song is a separate track credited to a band or artist. For Saw IV, Clouser is credited with the score, and the film has one featured song.

That song is "I.V." by X Japan, and it was written for the film. It is the only featured song named for Saw IV, so the rest of the music on the album belongs to Clouser's score.

Can You Explain the Plot of Saw 4?Spoilers

Saw IV follows an investigation and a series of traps that run side by side, and both end at the Gideon Meat Factory. The film begins with an autopsy on the dead Jigsaw killer. A microcassette is found in his stomach, and its message for Hoffman says the games have only just begun.

Officer Rigg, a tireless cop who cannot stop trying to save others, is forced into a series of traps. The stakes are the lives of the people he is trying to rescue, including Detective Eric Matthews, who turns out to be alive. Eric appeared in saw 3, where he got out of the bathroom trap he had been left in.

Agents Strahm and Perez study the case and try to stay one step behind the new game. Jigsaw's widow Jill is questioned and talks about a past miscarriage that shaped John Kramer. Flashbacks fill in how Kramer became the man behind the puzzles, and together with Jill's account they give the film its emotional spine.

The clues lead the investigators to the Gideon Meat Factory, where the final test takes place. Rigg must choose whether to follow the rules of the game or break them in order to save a victim. It is revealed that Hoffman is another apprentice of Jigsaw and has been involved in the games. He seals Rigg and Strahm inside the factory, leaving them trapped.

In my opinion, the structure is what sets this entry apart. It splits its attention between the police procedure, the personal history of John Kramer and the game Rigg is forced through, and the reveal at the factory pulls those strands together.

Saw 4 Release Date and Opening Weekend

Saw 4 opened in US theaters on October 26, 2007, with the same date in the UK and an Australian release one day earlier on October 25, 2007. Lionsgate had released a Saw film every October since the original in 2004, so Saw IV landed in the same late October slot as Saw III a year earlier, and saw 5 kept the pattern by following on October 24, 2008.

The opening weekend was estimated at $32.1 million, just below Saw III's $33.6 million debut. The film went on to earn $63.3 million domestically and $76.1 million internationally, for $139.4 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo and The Numbers. That is nearly fourteen times its cost. Within the ten films, only Saw III and Saw II made more worldwide, which puts Saw IV third on that measure.

It did make less at home than its two direct predecessors, so the US figure was the series' first clear step down after the peak. Overseas, though, Saw IV finished ahead of Saw II. The home video release from Lionsgate Home Entertainment came on January 22, 2008.

Saw 4 Ending Explained: The Hoffman RevealSpoilers

The ending of Saw 4 reveals that Hoffman is a second apprentice of Jigsaw, and it leaves Rigg and Strahm sealed inside the Gideon Meat Factory. At the factory the last game reaches its climax and Rigg's choices decide who lives. Hoffman is exposed, and he traps Rigg and Strahm inside the building and leaves them there.

Why does this matter? In my opinion, it changes how you read the whole film. The opening tape was addressed to Hoffman, and the reveal tells you that the message was no random handoff. That is a neat bit of structure, though it asks you to accept that the apprenticeship ran quietly beside the earlier films.

Rigg's final test is the human side of the same idea. He must choose whether to follow the rules of the game or break them to save a victim, which suits a character defined by his inability to stop trying to help. It could be argued that the choice is the point of the film: Jigsaw's tests are about whether people will obey or act, and Rigg is built to act.

The ending sets up the follow-up, saw 5. There, Hoffman is hailed as a hero for supposedly ending the Jigsaw killings, and Agent Strahm survives a trap of his own and begins to doubt the official story. By saw 6, Hoffman is covering his tracks by planting the dead Strahm's fingerprints at the scene. So the trapped men at the end of Saw IV are the thread that Saw V picks up. For the whole chain of events, see the saw timeline explained page.
