What Is Scream 2 About?

Scream 2 is about the aftermath of the Woodsboro murders, when a new Ghostface killer starts copying the original crimes on a college campus. The story opens at an early screening of Stab, a movie based on the Woodsboro killings. Two students, Maureen (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Phil (Omar Epps), are in the audience, and a Ghostface murders them during the show.

The new deaths bring the press to Windsor College in Ohio, where Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is now a student. Deputy Dewey Riley (David Arquette) arrives to look after her, and the reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) turns up with her cameraman Joel (Duane Martin) to cover the story. A sorority girl is killed soon after, and Sidney and her friends realize the killer is following the Woodsboro pattern.

If you are new to the series, the film leans on events from Scream (1996), so watch that first. The full sequence is laid out in our guide to scream movies in order.

What Songs Are in Scream 2?

Marco Beltrami composed the score for Scream 2 (1997), and the album "Scream 2: Music From the Dimension Motion Picture" was released by Capitol Records on December 2, 1997, with 15 tracks. Beltrami had already scored the first film, so the sequel keeps the same composer behind its orchestral suspense.

The film also draws on a wide mix of late 1990s rock, rap and R&B, and twelve songs are credited. The one with a documented place in the story is "I Think I Love You" by Less Than Jake, which the character Derek sings in a scene of the film. Even so, the full lineup reads like a snapshot of the era's radio.

  • "Scream" by Master P and Silkk the Shocker
  • "Dear Lover" by Foo Fighters
  • "Help Myself" by Dave Matthews Band
  • "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
  • "I Think I Love You" by Less Than Jake
  • "Rivers" by Sugar Ray
  • "She Said" by Collective Soul
  • "The Swing" by Everclear
  • "She's Always in My Hair" by D'Angelo
  • "Eyes of Sand" by Tonic
  • "Your Lucky Day in Hell" by Eels
  • "Right Place Wrong Time" by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

"Red Right Hand" is the one with a long afterlife in the saga, since the same Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds song also appears in Scream (2022) and Scream VI. For the music across the whole series, see the scream soundtrack page.

Scream 2 Plot in Full: Who Is the Killer?Spoilers

The killers in Scream 2 are Mickey, a film student played by Timothy Olyphant, and the reporter Debbie Salt, played by Laurie Metcalf, who turns out to be Nancy Loomis, the mother of Billy from the first film. Everything below is a full spoiler.

After the Stab screening murders, Cici (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is killed at a sorority house. Sidney is later attacked, and her boyfriend Derek (Jerry O'Connell) is hurt. Gale notices that the victims' names echo those of the original Woodsboro victims, which confirms the copycat pattern. Ghostface then kills Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) inside Joel's van, and Joel leaves town. Dewey is stabbed while reviewing Joel's footage with Gale.

Ghostface goes on to kill the officers escorting Sidney and Hallie (Elise Neal), and Hallie dies as well. Sidney finds Derek tied up in the campus theater, and Ghostface is unmasked as Mickey, who shoots Derek. Mickey wants to be caught and to blame movie violence so that he becomes famous. His partner Debbie Salt turns on him and shoots him, then reveals herself as Nancy Loomis. She wants revenge on Sidney, and she says she killed Randy for slandering her son.

Cotton Weary (Liev Schreiber) arrives and shoots her in return for an interview. Mickey comes back, and Gale and Sidney kill him. Sidney then shoots Nancy, and the threat ends.

When Was the Scream 2 Release Date?

The Scream 2 release date in the US was December 12, 1997, two days after its premiere in Hollywood on December 10, 1997. Box Office Mojo confirms the US date, and the film arrived in Australia on January 15, 1998 and in the UK on May 1, 1998, according to TMDB.

The opening weekend brought in $32.9 million domestically, which helped the film finish with about $101 million in the US and $71 million internationally. Against a $24 million budget, that is a worldwide total of roughly $172 million, per Box Office Mojo. The film is rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia.

A limited 25th anniversary run in US theaters followed on October 9, 2022. For the franchise totals, see the scream box office page.

Scream 2 Ending Explained: Mickey, Nancy and CottonSpoilers

The ending of Scream 2 works because it gives the audience two different kinds of killer: one who wants fame and one who wants revenge. Everything below gives away the killers, and the reading is my own.

Mickey's motive is the film's argument about itself. He wants to be caught and to blame movie violence, so the sequel is arguing with the idea that sequels cause crime. Nancy Loomis, who uses the name Debbie Salt, is the emotional counterweight, because her grudge links straight back to Billy from Scream (1996) and to Sidney. In my opinion, that makes her the stronger reveal, even though Mickey gets the louder scene in the campus theater.

The final beats resolve the loose threads. Cotton Weary shoots Nancy in return for an interview, and Sidney then steers the waiting press toward him. It could be argued that this is the most pointed moment, because the media circus lands on the one man who asked for it. Dewey turns out to be alive and is taken away in an ambulance with Gale riding along. Both killers are dead, so the film closes on survivors rather than on a cliffhanger.

On the question many fans ask, Sidney is not hallucinating in this film. The attacks are real, and the visions of Billy Loomis belong to Sam in Scream (2022), not to Sidney here. Williamson has said he deliberately kept Sidney, Gale and Dewey alive and killed Randy to raise the stakes, and in my view that choice is why the film still feels dangerous. For the bigger picture of who wears the mask, see ghostface killers and scream rules.

Where Is Scream 2 Set?

Scream 2 is set at Windsor College in Ohio, where Sidney Prescott is now a student. The story moves through the Stab screening theater, a sorority house, a campus theater and Joel's van, and those are the settings that carry the film's set pieces.

The next film, Scream 3, moves the franchise to Hollywood.

Scream 2 Trivia

Scream 2 trivia runs from a decoy script to its opening weekend, and most of it comes from Kevin Williamson. Some of it gives away who survives.

  • Williamson says the team expected the script to leak, so they sent out a version missing its last 75 pages. They also wrote a decoy script with Dewey as the killer and leaked that instead.
  • The film opened with $32.9 million domestically on a $24 million budget.
  • Williamson was rewriting The Faculty and working on the first season of Dawson's Creek while Scream 2 was made.
  • Williamson says he kept Sidney, Gale and Dewey alive and killed Randy to raise the stakes.
  • The film had a limited 25th anniversary run in US theaters on October 9, 2022.
