Scream 2022 Plot: How Does the Film Begin?

Scream 2022 begins in Woodsboro, 25 years after the original murders, with teenager Tara Carpenter home alone when a caller turns a chat about scary films into a deadly game. A Ghostface killer stabs her, and she survives and is taken to hospital.

The opening echoes Scream (1996), directed by Wes Craven, where a phone call about horror movies is the first move in the killer's game. The difference here is that the victim lives, which hands the story a wounded witness and a family problem to solve. Tara's estranged older sister Sam comes back to Woodsboro with her boyfriend Richie after years away, and Tara's friends gather around her as the town braces for a new round of killings.

If you want the series context first, the scream movies in order guide shows where this film sits, and the scream timeline puts it 25 years after the first murders.

Scream 2022 Full Plot SummarySpoilers

Tara survives the opening attack, and Sam returns to Woodsboro with Richie. Sam is hiding a secret: she is the daughter of Billy Loomis, the killer from the first film, and she is troubled by visions of him.

The killer then works through people with ties to the old murders and to Tara's circle. Vince is killed, and so is Wes Hicks, along with his mother, Sheriff Judy Hicks. Tara's friends, including the twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, become the next targets. Former sheriff Dewey Riley is stabbed at the hospital while trying to help, and he dies. Gale Weathers and Sidney Prescott arrive to stand beside the survivors.

The group meets at the house of Amber, which once belonged to Stu Macher. There Amber shoots Liv and is revealed as one of the two killers, with Richie as her partner. Both are fans of the Stab films who wanted to stage new, real murders to inspire a better sequel, and they planned to frame Sam for the killings.

Sidney and Gale fight them. Gale shoots Amber, who is set alight on a stove. Sam kills Richie, and Tara finishes off the wounded Amber. Sam, Tara and their friends survive, and Gale chooses not to write a book about the killings.

Did Scream 2022 Have a Premiere?

Scream 2022 had no red carpet premiere, because Paramount cancelled the planned Los Angeles event for January 11, 2022 amid a rise in Covid activity, according to a report that cited Deadline.

The film went straight to theaters instead. Box Office Mojo lists the earliest releases on January 12, 2022 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and in Asia Pacific. The film opened in the US on January 14, 2022, according to Paramount, and TMDB lists the UK date as January 14 and the Australian date as January 13.

Scream 2022 Ending Explained: Who Is the Killer and Why?Spoilers

The Scream 2022 killers are Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman, and their motive is to turn real murders into raw material for a better Stab sequel. Both die in the finale: Sam kills Richie, and Tara finishes off Amber after Gale shoots her.

In my opinion, the motive is the smartest idea in the film, because it points the series back at its own audience. Stab appears as a film within a film in Scream 2 and Scream 3, and in Scream 2 the killer copies the Woodsboro pattern. Here the killers are fans of those movies who want a better sequel, so they decide to supply the events themselves. It could be argued that this is the most direct comment the franchise has made about its fandom. For more on how the series builds its killers, see the ghostface killers page.

The frame job on Sam is the practical part of the plan. She is the secret daughter of Billy Loomis, and the killers planned to frame her for the murders. That setup puts the Carpenter sisters, rather than a legacy character, at the center of the film.

The ending also has a cost. Dewey Riley dies at the hospital, and Gale decides not to write a book about the killings. She writes a tribute to Dewey instead. Sam, Tara and their friends are left to rebuild, and their story continues in Scream VI, where the Carpenter sisters have moved to New York City. The scream rules page shows how this film plays with the series' own rules.

Where Was Scream 2022 Filmed?

Scream 2022 was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina, even though the story is set in Woodsboro. Willston Middle School and Cardinal Lanes Shipyards were among the locations used, according to local reporting from WRAL.

Other entries filmed elsewhere. Scream 7 shot in Georgia, including Great Point Studios in Atlanta, and Scream (1996) shot its school scenes at the Sonoma Community Center in California, according to local press at the time.

Scream 2022 Trivia and Box Office Facts

Scream 2022 grossed $137.7 million worldwide on a $24 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, which is more than five times what it cost. Its domestic take of $81.6 million is more than double what Scream 4 made in the US. The wider picture is on the scream box office page.

A few other facts stand out:

  • Brian Tyler scored the film, replacing Marco Beltrami, who composed the first four Scream films.
  • The budget matches Scream 2, which also cost $24 million.
  • The planned Los Angeles red carpet premiere on January 11, 2022 was cancelled by Paramount.
  • Skeet Ulrich returns as Billy Loomis, the role he played in the first film.
  • Roger L. Jackson is credited as The Voice, the same phone voice credit he holds in Scream VI and Scream 7.
  • The film is the first in the series without a Wes Craven directing credit, and the first directed by Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin.

In release order it is the fifth film, and chronologically it is the fifth too. The next film in the saga is Scream VI, and the franchise continues with scream 8. The full list lives on the scream movies hub.

Facts

FAQs

Was Scream 2022 a flop?

No. Scream 2022 earned $137.7 million worldwide on a $24 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, so it grossed more than five times its cost. In the US it made $81.6 million, which is more than double what Scream 4 made domestically.

Why was the new Scream so bad?

Opinions on the film differ, and the most debated choice is its killers, who are fans of the Stab films. Some viewers like that idea and others do not. For how it sits against the other films, see scream movies ranked.

Is Scream 2022 connected to Scream 6?

Yes. Scream VI is the direct sequel, and it brings back Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as Sam and Tara Carpenter, along with Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin. The same directing pair, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, made both films.

Is Scream 2022 actually scary?

That depends on the viewer. The film builds its scares around the opening phone call, a Ghostface who stalks Tara's circle of friends, and the voice of Roger L. Jackson on the line. It is rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia.
