Sidney Prescott: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Happens to Her
Sidney Prescott is the lead survivor of the Scream saga, played by Neve Campbell in six of the seven films and credited as Sidney Evans in Scream 7. She first appears in Scream (1996), directed by Wes Craven, as a student in Woodsboro, California whose mother was murdered a year earlier, and she survives every film she is in.
Who Plays Sidney Prescott?
Who Is Sidney Prescott in Scream?
Sidney Prescott is the central character of the Scream saga, a Woodsboro teenager who becomes the recurring target of the Ghostface killers. She is played by Neve Campbell in Scream (1996), Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4, Scream (2022) and Scream 7, where the credits read Sidney Evans. Campbell is billed first in all of those except Scream (2022), where she is billed ninth.
In the opening film, Sidney is a student still dealing with grief, because her mother, Maureen Prescott, was murdered a year earlier. The anniversary is close when a masked killer in a black robe and ghost mask attacks her at home. The man convicted of the murder, Cotton Weary, is the subject of reporter Gale Weathers' theory that he was wrongly jailed, which keeps the old case in the headlines while Sidney tries to move on.
She is one of the main Scream characters, and she appears in six of the seven films, missing only Scream VI (2023). Around her sit a handful of recurring allies: Deputy Dewey Riley, the reporter Gale Weathers, and the film-obsessed Randy Meeks. Each film puts her somewhere different (a small town, a college campus, a Hollywood set, a book tour and finally a quiet family life), so she works as a measure of how the series changes over time.
The name changes once. In Scream 7 she is credited as Sidney Evans, and she has a husband and a teenage daughter. Anyone searching for Sidney Evans is looking for the same character.

Sidney Prescott's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Sidney's arc runs through six films and moves from victim to survivor to parent, with a different killer in each one.
In Scream (1996), she fights off the first attack and is then pulled into a night at Stu's house where the body count rises. Her boyfriend Billy Loomis and his friend Stu Macher step out as the two killers, and Billy says he blamed Sidney's mother for breaking up his family. Helped by a wounded Gale and by Dewey, Sidney kills Stu and shoots Billy in the head when he rises one last time.
In Scream 2, she is a student at Windsor College in Ohio, guarded by Dewey, while the new killings begin at a preview screening of Stab. The unmasked killer is Mickey, a film student who wants to be caught and blame movie violence. His partner, the reporter Debbie Salt, is really Nancy Loomis, Billy's mother, who wants revenge on Sidney. Sidney finishes Nancy with a shot to the head.
In Scream 3, she lives alone in hiding in a remote house and works as a phone counselor for abuse victims. She returns to Hollywood as Stab 3 cast members are killed, each with a photo of her mother left at the scene. The killer is Roman Bridger, the director of Stab 3, who reveals he is Sidney's half-brother and the product of a violent assault on their mother. After a hard fight, Sidney stabs him several times, and Dewey shoots him when he gets back up. The epilogue shows her leaving her gates and door open.
In Scream 4, fifteen years after the first murders, she returns home to promote her self-help book. Evidence turns up in her rental car, so she becomes a suspect. The killer is her cousin Jill Roberts, who was jealous of Sidney's fame and wanted to become the famous sole survivor. Jill stabs Sidney and leaves her for dead, but Sidney survives and later shoots Jill at the hospital.
In Scream (2022), she arrives with Gale to help the survivors after Dewey is killed. Fighting alongside Gale, she helps stop Richie and Amber, two Stab fans who staged real murders to inspire a better sequel.
In Scream 7, she is a mother, and the killers come for her family and her daughter Tatum.
Sidney Prescott's Relationships: Family, Allies and Enemies
Sidney's relationships fall into three groups: the family she lost or gained, the survivors who stand with her, and the killers who make her story personal. Several of the people closest to her turn out to be killers, and each reveal reshapes her bonds.
Her mother, Maureen Prescott, is the root of the saga. Billy blamed Maureen for breaking up his family, and Nancy Loomis, posing as Debbie Salt in Scream 2, wants revenge for her son. In Scream 3, Roman Bridger says Maureen rejected him, and that he is her son through a violent assault. Nearly every motive in the first three films leads back to Maureen.
Gale Weathers begins as an intrusive reporter who pushes the theory that Cotton Weary is innocent. In Scream 7, Sidney and Gale repair their friendship at the end. Dewey is the deputy who protects her in Scream 2 and who helps in the finale of Scream 3, and he dies in Scream (2022), before Sidney and Gale arrive to help the survivors.
Sidney also becomes a link to the younger survivors. In Scream (2022), she and Gale arrive to help Sam Carpenter and Tara Carpenter, and she shares screen time with the Meeks-Martin twins, Mindy and Chad, in Scream 7.
In Scream 7, her private life is the story. Mark Evans, played by Joel McHale, is her husband, and Tatum Evans, played by Isabel May, is her teenage daughter. Sidney's neighbor Jessica Bowden is unmasked as one of the killers, because she believed Sidney's fame came from killing the people who tormented her.
What Happened to Sidney Prescott? Does She Die?Spoilers
Sidney Prescott does not die in any film she appears in, and she is alive at the end of the latest one.
She survives Scream (1996), Scream 2 and Scream 3 by killing the people hunting her. Scream 4 comes closest, because Jill stabs her and leaves her for dead, though she survives and ends the film with Gale and Dewey. In Scream (2022), she is again a survivor who steps in to help.
The fullest answer is in Scream 7. Her daughter Tatum becomes the main target of a new Ghostface, and Sidney is pulled back into the fight. One Ghostface is Karl Gibbs, an escaped patient from a mental institution, directed by a voice presenting itself as Stu Macher, a persona built by institution supervisor Marco Davis. The second Ghostface is Jessica Bowden, Sidney's neighbor. Sidney shoots Marco dead, Tatum frees herself, and mother and daughter together kill Jessica. Mark survives and is taken to hospital, and the film ends with the survivors starting to move on. Reporting around the film says the ending closes character arcs rather than teasing a sequel, and a Scream 8 has since been reported in development.
She is not in Scream VI (2023), which follows the Carpenter sisters in New York. Good Morning America reported that Neve Campbell exited that film over pay. No cast has been officially announced for Scream 8. Collider reports that Neve Campbell is involved, but the cast has not been officially announced.
Sidney Prescott's Best Moments
In my opinion, Sidney's best moments are the ones where she stops being the target and takes control of the scene, and they are spread unevenly across the saga.
The strongest is the turn in Scream (1996). After the reveal that Billy and Stu are the killers, Sidney, helped by a wounded Gale and by Dewey, flips the situation and kills both. It could be argued that this is the template every later film chases, because the horror comes from the surprise and the payoff from a heroine who finally wins.
The second is the end of Scream 3, where she rejects Roman's excuses, stabs him several times and then closes the story by leaving her gates and door open. That image is quiet and earned, and it works because the earlier films showed how long she had lived in fear, hiding in a remote house.
The third is Scream 4, where Jill leaves her for dead and Sidney still has enough left in the hospital to shock Jill with a defibrillator and shoot her. It is a hard scene because Sidney fights a family member who envies her story.
The last is Scream 7. Seeing Sidney and Tatum kill Jessica together is the first time the saga lets Sidney fight as a parent, and it is a fair answer to a series that keeps asking what a final girl does next. That being said, the film leans on her family, so readers who prefer the original small town setup may favor the earlier entries.
