Scream Cast: Every Actor, Director and Returning Star

The Scream cast centers on Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who play Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley, with a fresh ensemble of young actors added in each new chapter. Every sequel in the Scream movies list brings back at least one face from Woodsboro, which is a large part of why the saga feels like a family reunion with a body count.

Who makes up the original Scream cast of 1996? Drew Barrymore plays Casey Becker, the teenager home alone in the opening phone call, while Skeet Ulrich, Rose McGowan, Matthew Lillard and Jamie Kennedy play Billy, Tatum, Stuart and Randy in the circle around Sidney. Liev Schreiber, as Cotton Weary, is billed eleventh and returns in Scream 2 and Scream 3. Roger L. Jackson supplies the phone voice in Scream (1996), Scream (2022), Scream VI and Scream 7, which makes him one of the quietest constants in the series.

The sequels keep recruiting fresh faces. Scream 2 gathers Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jada Pinkett Smith, Omar Epps and Timothy Olyphant around the Windsor College setting, and Scream 3 moves to Hollywood with Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey and Lance Henriksen. Scream 4 adds Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Paquin and Alison Brie, among others.

Scream (2022) hands the lead to Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as the Carpenter sisters, supported by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as the Meeks-Martin twins. Scream VI keeps that core and adds Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra and Samara Weaving.

Who is in the newest film? Scream 7 reached US theaters on February 27, 2026, and it puts Campbell at the top of the billing as Sidney Evans, with Isabel May playing her daughter Tatum. Matthew Lillard also appears as Stu Macher, and Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor and Sam Rechner are part of the younger group. If you want to see how the characters connect, the Scream characters page has the full list.

Wes Craven directed the first four Scream films, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directed the next two, and Kevin Williamson directed Scream 7. That is three directing eras across seven films, and each one changed the feel of the saga in a clear way.

Craven made Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000) and Scream 4 (2011), so his name sits over the whole original run. The writing side shifted in the middle, because Screen Daily's credits show Ehren Kruger replacing Williamson as writer on Scream 3. Williamson then directed Scream 7 (2026), which shot in Georgia, including at Great Point Studios in Atlanta, in January 2025.

Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin took over for Scream (2022) and Scream VI. They worked with a lead pair of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and Scream VI moved the action to New York City. Their two films cost between $24 million and $35 million, less than the $40 million that Scream 3 and Scream 4 each cost. Scream 7 carries a reported $45 million budget, the largest in the saga.

On the music side, Marco Beltrami scored Scream (1996), Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4 and Scream 7, while Brian Tyler scored Scream (2022) and Scream VI. For the song lists, see the Scream soundtrack page.

Looking ahead, Scream 8 is in development at Spyglass. TheWrap reported on March 31, 2026 that Lilla and Nora Zuckerman are writing it, and its November 2, 2026 report says a new director is to be hired, with Williamson attached as a producer. No release date has been announced, and the latest is tracked on the Scream 8 page.

Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette are the core returning stars, and Scream rarely swaps the actor behind a character. In my opinion, that loyalty to the same faces is the secret ingredient of the series, in the way a long running television drama keeps its core family around the table.

How many Scream movies is Neve Campbell in? She appears in six of the seven, namely Scream (1996), Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4, Scream (2022) and Scream 7. The one gap is Scream VI, and Good Morning America reported that she chose not to return over pay. She came back for Scream 7 as Sidney Evans, and TheWrap reports she has now confirmed to the AP that she will be in Scream 8. It could be argued that the franchise leans on her more now than at any point since 1996, since the Scream 7 story is built around Sidney and her daughter Tatum.

Cox and Arquette are the other pillars. Cox plays Gale Weathers in the first five films and in Scream 7, and Gale also appears in Scream VI as a bestselling author. Arquette plays Dewey in the first five films, listed as Deputy Dewey in 1996 and as Dewey Riley afterward. Jamie Kennedy (Randy Meeks) and Liev Schreiber (Cotton Weary) appear in the first three films.

The newer cast has seen its own reshuffle. Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega headline Scream (2022) and Scream VI, and TheWrap reported Barrera's firing ahead of Scream 7. Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding, as Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin, are the bridge from the 2022 pair of films into Scream 7. Hayden Panettiere plays Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and again in Scream VI, which makes her a rare legacy character who skipped the film in between.

Older faces from the first film have returned too. Skeet Ulrich plays Billy Loomis in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, and Matthew Lillard is back as Stu Macher in Scream 7. For the full story of how the lineup shifted, see the Scream movies in order guide.
