Arquette is billed fifth in the first film, third in Scream 2, and second in both scream 3 and scream 4, which shows how far the character climbs from side player to lead.

In the early films Dewey is the earnest local lawman, a little out of his depth beside the killer's film trivia and the reporters crowding his town. Dewey Riley's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Dewey's arc runs through five films, and in each one he is closer to the center of the fight. In Scream (1996) he is one of the survivors who help Sidney Prescott turn the tables on the two killers, Billy Loomis and Stu Macher, and he is among those tended to as the film ends.

In Scream 2, the new Ghostface killings follow a preview screening of Stab, and Dewey arrives at Windsor College to look after Sidney. While reviewing the cameraman Joel's footage with Gale, he is stabbed. Ghostface then kills the officers escorting Sidney, but Dewey turns out to be alive and leaves in an ambulance with Gale beside him. The killers in that film are Mickey, a film student, and the reporter Debbie Salt, who is revealed to be Nancy Loomis, Billy's mother.

In Scream 3, Dewey is working as an adviser on the Hollywood production of Stab 3 and teams up with Gale and Detective Mark Kincaid to protect the cast. The killer is Roman Bridger, the film's director and Sidney's half-brother, and it is Dewey who shoots him when he rises after the fight with Sidney. The film closes with Dewey and Gale sharing a hopeful moment.

In Scream 4, set fifteen years after the first murders, Gale is credited as Gale Weathers-Riley. After Gale is stabbed at a Stab marathon party, Dewey and Gale work out at the hospital that Jill Roberts is guilty, because she mentioned a detail of Gale's attack that was never public. Jill is the second Ghostface, alongside Charlie Walker.

In Scream (2022), twenty-five years after the original murders, Dewey is a former sheriff. He tries to help the new generation, including Sam and Tara Carpenter, and that decision leads to the end of his story.

Dewey Riley's Relationships: Sidney, Gale and the Rest

Dewey's defining relationships are with Gale Weathers and sidney prescott. With Sidney he is the protector, first as the deputy sent to guard her at Windsor College and later as the ally who comes back when the killings return. He is also one of three survivors, with Sidney and Gale, still standing at the end of Scream 4.

With gale weathers the story starts in the first film, where Gale is a pushy TV reporter and Dewey is a Woodsboro deputy. By Scream 2 they review Joel's footage together and leave in the same ambulance, and by Scream 3 they share a quiet, hopeful moment at the finale. In Scream 4 she is credited as Gale Weathers-Riley, and the two work out the hospital clue together. In Scream (2022) it is Gale who writes a tribute to him.

Dewey also crosses paths with the franchise's killers. He shoots Roman Bridger in Scream 3, and the legacy of the original ghostface killers, billy loomis and stu macher, hangs over the town he keeps trying to protect.

How Does Dewey Riley Die? The Dewey Scream Death ExplainedSpoilers

Dewey Riley dies in Scream (2022), stabbed by Ghostface at the hospital while he is trying to help. He had already survived a stabbing in Scream 2 and shot Roman Bridger in Scream 3, so his death lands on a character who seemed to have survived everything.

The film, directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, uses his death to raise the stakes before Sidney and Gale arrive to help the Carpenter sisters. After the killers, Richie and Amber, are dead, Gale decides not to write a book about the murders and writes a tribute to Dewey instead.

Why was Dewey killed off? The film does not state a reason, so this is my reading: it ends a lawman's story with him protecting others, and it signals that the series was passing the lead to Sam, Tara and their friends.

As for the question of a disability, no film summary describes Dewey as having one. What the films show is injury and recovery after the Scream 2 stabbing.

Dewey Riley's Best Moments, Ranked by Impact

In my opinion, Dewey's best moment is the Scream 2 stabbing and its aftermath, because the film pulls him out of the action and then brings him back in the ambulance scene. It could be argued that the series earns a lot of goodwill there: Ghostface kills the officers escorting Sidney and Hallie, the audience believes Dewey is gone, and then he is alive with Gale riding along.

Second, I would pick the Scream 3 finale, where Dewey shoots Roman Bridger after Sidney has stabbed him several times and he rises again. It pays off a character who has been Sidney's steady ally since the first film, and the quiet beat with Gale that follows is the most hopeful note in the original trilogy.

Third comes the Scream 4 hospital scene, when Dewey and Gale deduce Jill's guilt from a detail she should not have known. That being said, it is Gale's attack that supplies the clue, so it is a shared win, and it shows how sharp the pair have become together.

Last, the death in Scream (2022) is the hardest to rank. It is effective, and I think it is the right choice for a legacy sequel, but it also leaves the returning cast without its steadiest member.
