Alice Cullen: Who She Is, Who Plays Her and What Her Visions Do

Alice Cullen is the vampire in the Cullen family who sees visions of the future, and she is played by actress Ashley Greene in all five Twilight films, from Twilight (2008) to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012). Her visions warn the family about the newborn army in Eclipse and decide the standoff with the Volturi in the final film.

Who Plays Alice Cullen?

Who Is Alice Cullen in Twilight?

Alice Cullen is one of the adopted Cullen siblings, a vampire in the family led by Carlisle Cullen and Esme Cullen, and the one member whose gift is seeing what is coming. She is played by Ashley Greene in every film, billed fifth in Twilight (2008), directed by Catherine Hardwicke, and sixth in both The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.

In the first film she is one of the pale, unusually close group of siblings that Bella Swan notices at her new school in Forks, Washington. From New Moon onward, Alice becomes far more than background, because her visions turn into a plot device that the story keeps returning to.

She is credited as Alice Cullen in all five films, with no alternate name in the credits. Her family sits alongside Jasper (credited as Jasper in 2008 and Jasper Hale afterward), Rosalie, Emmett and the rest of the household described on the Cullen family page. If you are tracking her across the saga, twilight movies in order shows where each appearance falls, and the twilight characters index covers the rest of the ensemble.

Alice Cullen's Story Arc Across the Five FilmsSpoilers

Alice's arc runs from quiet family member to the person who saves the Cullens at the end, and it is driven almost entirely by what she sees and when she is wrong. In Twilight (2008) she belongs to the family that tries to shield Bella from the hunting vampire James, before the Cullens destroy him.

In The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009, directed by Chris Weitz), Bella's eighteenth birthday party goes wrong when she gets hurt and Jasper nearly attacks her, and the Cullens leave Forks. Later Alice sees Bella jump off a cliff and wrongly tells Edward Cullen that she is dead. When Edward travels to Italy to ask the Volturi to kill him, Alice brings Bella to Volterra, and Bella reaches him just before he exposes himself to the sun in public. It could be argued that this is Alice's biggest mistake and her biggest rescue in the same story.

In The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010, directed by David Slade), she foresees Victoria's newborn army moving toward Forks, so the Cullens begin watching the area closely and later train alongside the wolf pack. In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011, directed by Bill Condon), she is among the Cullens gathered as Bella and Edward marry.

In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012), she leaves after a vision of the Volturi coming, and her last witness, a half human, half vampire man, proves Renesmee is no danger. Her vision of the future closes the confrontation.

Alice Cullen's Relationships: Bella, Edward, Jasper and the Family

Alice's closest ties are to the Cullens, to Bella, and to Jasper, and the films use each one to show a different side of her gift. With Edward, she is a sibling whose visions he has to take seriously, which is exactly why her false vision of Bella's death in New Moon sends him to Italy. With Bella, she goes from watchful family member to the person who physically brings her across the ocean to stop a disaster.

Was Alice in love with Bella? The films frame her as a loyal friend and future family member, and nothing in the plots presents the bond as romantic. Her actions are those of a sister protecting a sister.

Jasper (played by Jackson Rathbone) is the family member whose moment of lost control sets New Moon in motion, and in Eclipse he explains to the group, and to Bella, how newborns fight, drawing on his own past. Carlisle and Esme Cullen remain the parental anchors of the household, and Alice stands with them at the final confrontation. Her last vision in Part 2 connects her to Renesmee and Jacob Black, whom she sees together in a happy future.

What Happens to Alice Cullen at the End?Spoilers

Alice is alive when the saga closes, and the last thing she does is win the Cullens their freedom with a picture instead of a fight. The clash on the snowy ground outside Forks, where Carlisle, Jasper and others are cut down, never actually happens: it is a vision that Alice holds out to Aro, a preview of what an attack would cost the Volturi. Aro sees the losses on his side, and that reckoning, together with the testimony of her final witness proving that Renesmee poses no threat, sends the Volturi away.

Her last glimpse of the future is a gentler one. She sees Renesmee grown up and happy beside Jacob, with Bella and Edward watching, and the film leaves that image as the saga's parting note for her. Because every death in the battle belonged to the vision, her family is whole when the credits begin, and no film in the series shows Alice dying.

Alice Cullen's Best Moments in the Films

In my opinion, Alice's best moments are the ones where her gift costs her something, because they turn a handy superpower into character. The first is the cliff jump in New Moon: she sees the jump and wrongly tells Edward that Bella is dead, and that single wrong conclusion sets the Italian chapter running. It is a smart piece of plotting, since the audience is shown that even a seer can be fooled.

The second is the trip to Volterra, where Alice brings Bella to Italy so she can reach Edward just before he exposes himself to the sun. It could be argued that it is the film's most urgent sequence, and Ashley Greene plays it with a practical, no fuss determination.

The third is the Part 2 vision shown to Aro. The film shows a devastating battle, and then reveals that it was Alice's argument, delivered as a picture. It is a fine lesson that a good case can be made without raising your voice. Compared with the larger set pieces of Eclipse, her quieter moments tend to land harder.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Alice Cullen in Twilight?

Ashley Greene plays Alice Cullen in all five films, from Twilight (2008) to The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012).

What abilities does Alice Cullen have?

Alice has visions of the future. In the films she foresees Victoria's newborn army heading for Forks in Eclipse, and in Breaking Dawn Part 2 she shows Aro a vision that helps end the standoff with the Volturi. Her visions can mislead her, as when she wrongly tells Edward in New Moon that Bella is dead.

Why is Alice so important in Twilight?

Her visions move the plot at its biggest turning points. She brings Bella to Volterra to stop Edward in New Moon, warns the family about the army in Eclipse, and helps persuade the Volturi to stand down in Breaking Dawn Part 2. She is alive when the saga ends, because the battle where several Cullens fall is only a vision she shows Aro.

Was Alice in love with Bella?

The films present Alice as a loyal friend and future family member to Bella, not a romantic interest. Her main scenes with Bella are protective ones, such as the trip to Italy.

When did Alice become a Cullen?

None of the five films states when Alice joined the Cullen family. On screen she is already one of Carlisle and Esme's adopted children when Bella meets the family in Twilight (2008), and her earlier history is not dramatized in the films.

Who is older, Jasper or Alice?

The films never give an age or birth date for either Alice or Jasper, so no film settles who is older. Both are shown as established members of the Cullen household from the first film, played by Ashley Greene and Jackson Rathbone.
