Who Plays Aro?

Who Is Aro in Twilight, and Who Plays Him?

Aro is one of the Volturi leaders, the powerful vampire group based in Italy, and Michael Sheen plays him in all three films where he appears. Sheen is billed fifth in The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), directed by Chris Weitz, sixth in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011), directed by Bill Condon, and fifteenth in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012), also directed by Condon. The character is credited simply as Aro in all three.

He does not appear in Twilight (2008), where the villains are the nomadic vampires James, Victoria and Laurent. He is also absent from the top fifteen credited cast of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, even though the Volturi turn up near the end of that film through Jane, played by Dakota Fanning, who has a captured newborn named Bree Tanner put to death.

If you are new to the saga and want the wider cast, the twilight characters page lists everyone, and the twilight cast page shows who plays them. Netflix has also ordered an animated series, Twilight: Midnight Sun, which is television rather than a film. No cast has been announced for it, so nothing is confirmed about Aro there.

Aro's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers

Aro enters the story in New Moon as the man who decides whether a human who knows the vampire secret may live, and he returns in the last two films as the threat hanging over the Cullens. His arc is short in screen time, but it connects three films.

In New Moon, Edward believes Bella is dead after Alice sees her jump from a cliff in a vision and misreads what has happened. A shattered Edward travels to Italy to ask the Volturi to kill him. Alice brings Bella to Volterra, and she reaches Edward just before he exposes himself to the sun in public. The Volturi leaders take an interest in the pair, and Aro decides that Bella must be turned into a vampire or killed, because she knows their secret. The pleading of the Cullens wins her a reprieve, on the condition that she will be changed soon. Parts of the Volturi scenes were shot in Montepulciano, a hill town in Tuscany, and the fountain in its Piazza Grande features in the film.

Breaking Dawn Part 1 gives the Volturi a single post credit scene. They receive Carlisle's letter about the wedding and Bella's transformation, and their leader says the Cullens still have something he wants.

In Breaking Dawn Part 2, Irina tells the Volturi that Renesmee is an immortal child, a kind of vampire that is forbidden because it cannot be controlled. Aro arrives in the snowy fields near Forks with a large army. He still hopes to take Renesmee and provoke a fight, and a battle seems to begin. It then turns out to be a vision that Alice shows him, which reveals that the Volturi would lose heavily. When Alice's last witness proves that Renesmee is no danger, the Volturi back down and leave.

Aro's Relationships: The Volturi, the Cullens and Bella

Aro's relationships are defined by authority: he rules over the Volturi, judges the Cullens, and sizes up Bella as a problem he can solve. On screen, Caius is another Volturi leader named in the credits, played by Jamie Campbell Bower in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, and Jane, played by Dakota Fanning, is the Volturi member who has Bree Tanner killed in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Marcus, the third of the Volturi leaders in Stephenie Meyer's books, is not among the top fifteen credited cast of any of the three films Aro appears in.

With the Cullens, the connection runs through Dr. Carlisle Cullen, played by Peter Facinelli, whose letter reaches the Volturi at the end of Breaking Dawn Part 1. You can read more about him on the carlisle cullen page, and the wider group is covered on the cullen family page. Alice Cullen is the Cullen whose vision ends the finale confrontation, since it exposes how a fight would end. Edward Cullen meets him at his lowest point in New Moon, when he asks the Volturi for death.

With Bella Swan, the key moment comes in New Moon, when Aro rules that she must be changed or killed. In Breaking Dawn Part 2 she has become a vampire, and her mental shield, which she learns to stretch so it protects other people from vampire powers, is part of what the Cullens bring to the standoff. Renesmee is the reason he comes to Forks at all, because the Volturi are told she is an immortal child.

What Happens to Aro at the End of the Saga?Spoilers

Aro survives the saga: the Volturi withdraw from the snowy standoff in Breaking Dawn Part 2 without a fight, and he is not killed on screen. The battle in which Carlisle, Jasper and several others fall is the vision Alice shows him, not a real event, and it persuades the Volturi that attacking would cost them heavily.

What ends the confrontation is evidence. Alice's last witness, a half human, half vampire man, proves that Renesmee is no danger, so the case that she is a forbidden immortal child collapses. The Cullens and their friends celebrate that the family is safe, and the film closes on Bella dropping her shield so Edward can see her memories, with no cliffhanger because this is the final film of the series.

For viewers working through the twilight movies in order, that makes his last scene a retreat rather than a defeat. There is no confirmed new Twilight film that would bring him back, and the new twilight movie page tracks the current status.

Aro's Best Moments, Ranked by One Fan

In my opinion, Aro's best scene is the finale in Breaking Dawn Part 2, because Michael Sheen plays a man who badly wants a fight and has to talk himself out of it. The Volturi arrive in the snow with a large army, Irina is put to death, and Aro still angles to take Renesmee. It could be argued that this is the one stretch of the saga where a villain has to lose by argument rather than by a wolf pack or a Cullen punch.

My second pick is his New Moon verdict in Volterra. The saga is usually a love story, and this is the moment it shows the cost of its own secret: Bella is told she can live only if she is changed. It also lifts the stakes of the engagement deal Edward proposes at the end of the film.

Third is the post credit scene in Breaking Dawn Part 1, where the Volturi read Carlisle's letter and their leader says the Cullens still have something he wants. It sets up the whole second half of the story, and it rewards anyone who stayed in their seat.

If you are choosing where to start with him, begin with twilight new moon, then jump to breaking dawn part 2 for the payoff.

Facts

FAQs

Who plays Aro in Twilight?

Michael Sheen plays Aro in three of the five films: The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (2011) and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (2012). He is billed fifth, sixth and fifteenth in those films. He is not in Twilight (2008), and he is not among the top fifteen credited cast of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Why did Aro want Edward?

In The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Edward travels to Italy to ask the Volturi to kill him, believing Bella is dead. When Bella and Alice arrive, the Volturi leaders take an interest in the pair, and Aro decides Bella must be turned into a vampire or killed because she knows their secret. The Cullens' pleading wins her a reprieve on the condition that she will be changed soon.

What are Aro's powers?

The films show Aro mainly through his authority: he decides Bella's fate in New Moon and leads the Volturi army in Breaking Dawn Part 2. None of the three films names a specific power for him. What they do show is that Bella's mental shield protects against vampire powers, which is why the Cullens value it in the standoff.

Why is Bella immune to Volturi powers?

In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Bella discovers that she has a mental shield against vampire powers, and she learns that it can be stretched to protect other people. She trains to use it before the Volturi arrive near Forks.

Is Marcus older than Aro?

The films do not say. Marcus is not among the top fifteen credited cast of New Moon, Breaking Dawn Part 1 or Breaking Dawn Part 2, and none of the plots establishes which Volturi leader is older, so there is no sourced answer to give.

Does Aro die in Twilight?

No. In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, the battle in which several Cullens fall is a vision that Alice shows Aro. The Volturi then back down when Renesmee is proven to be no danger, and they leave without a fight.
