Underworld Awakening Plot: What Is the Story?

Underworld: Awakening is about a world where humans have discovered vampires and Lycans (werewolves) and have decided to destroy both. After the secret war of the first three films, the public learns the truth, and a government program to study the two species turns into a mass extermination known as the Purge.

Selene, the vampire Death Dealer played by Kate Beckinsale, and her lover Michael Corvin are captured, and Selene is put into cryogenic suspension. She wakes many years later in a laboratory, escapes into a world that has changed completely, and finds a young girl being held in the same facility. That girl turns out to be her own daughter, Eve.

The film is the fourth in release order and in chronological order, directed by the Swedish pair Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein. If you need the wider picture first, the underworld movies in order guide places it after underworld evolution and before underworld blood wars.

What Songs Are in Underworld: Awakening?

Paul Haslinger composed the score for Underworld: Awakening (2012), and Lakeshore Records released two albums: "Underworld: Awakening: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" on January 17, 2012, with 17 tracks, and "Underworld: Awakening: Original Motion Picture Score" on January 24, 2012, with 25 tracks.

The score album runs eight tracks longer than the soundtrack album, so anyone who wants Haslinger's orchestral and electronic work on its own has plenty to hear. The film also carries a set of licensed rock and electronic songs, and five of them are Renholdër remixes of existing tracks. Ben Weinman remixed the Lacuna Coil song.

The featured songs are:

  • "Made of Stone (Renholdër remix)" by Evanescence
  • "Blackout (Renholdër remix)" by Linkin Park
  • "Apart (Renholdër remix)" by The Cure
  • "Watch Yourself (Renholdër remix)" by Ministry
  • "Heavy Prey" by Lacey Mosley and Geno Lenardo
  • "Young Blood (Renholdër remix)" by The Naked and Famous
  • "Trip the Darkness (Ben Weinman remix)" by Lacuna Coil
  • "Killer & a Queen" by Stella Katsoudas and Geno Lenardo
  • "Bottle of Pain" by Combichrist
  • "Intruder" by Collide
  • "How’m I Supposed to Die" by Civil Twilight
  • "Consolation Prize" by & SONS

Underworld: Awakening Plot in FullSpoilers

The full plot runs from the Purge to a raid on a corporate tower, and it ends with Michael missing again.

Six months after the earlier film, the public learns that vampires and Lycans exist. A human program to study them becomes the Purge, and Selene and Michael are caught in it. Selene goes into cryogenic suspension, and about twelve years later she breaks out of the facility and takes a young girl with her. The girl is her hybrid daughter, Eve.

A vampire named David takes the pair to his coven. The Lycans attack that coven, and Selene fights a huge Super Lycan called Quint. David is badly wounded, and Selene saves him with her blood. It then emerges that David's father, Thomas, had handed Eve to the Lycans in an attempt to stop the attack.

Selene and Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy) trace the Lycans to Antigen, a company run by Lycans posing as humans. Its head, Dr. Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea), wants Eve's DNA to strengthen the Lycan race. Selene, Sebastian and David raid the Antigen building, and inside Selene finds Michael in a cryogenic tank and frees him.

She has to leave him as he thaws, because the Lycans are about to take Eve. Selene lures Quint into his weaker human form and kills him with a silver grenade, and Eve kills Lane. When the group goes back to Michael's tank, it is empty.

When Was Underworld: Awakening Released?

Underworld: Awakening opened in US theaters on January 20, 2012, according to Box Office Mojo, with the UK following the same day and Australia on January 26, 2012. Sony expected an opening weekend of $20 million to $22 million, and the film took an estimated $25.4 million, according to TheWrap.

It was the first Underworld film released in 3D and in IMAX. 3D screenings made up 59 percent of the opening weekend receipts and IMAX made up another 15 percent, so the new formats drove most of that first weekend.

The final run reached about $62 million domestic and about $98 million international, for about $160 million worldwide. Neither the studio nor the trades have published a premiere date, city or venue.

For streaming, the film is on Starz in the US, on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and on Stan in Australia, as of November 3, 2026, according to JustWatch data on TMDB. The where to watch underworld page tracks every film by country, and the underworld trailers page collects the official clips.

Underworld Awakening Explained: The Ending and the Empty TankSpoilers

The ending of Underworld: Awakening resolves the fight over Eve and leaves Michael as the open question.

Selene kills the Super Lycan Quint by tricking him into reverting to his human form, then using a silver grenade. Eve kills Dr. Lane, which ends the immediate threat to her. The group returns to the tank where Selene left Michael, and it is empty. They vow to find him before anyone else does.

Why does the Quint kill work? In my opinion, it is the cleanest use of the series' creature rules in the film. Quint is a huge Super Lycan, so Selene wins by forcing him back into his weaker human form and finishing him with a silver grenade. It is a small piece of logic, and it pays off the earlier fight with Quint at David's coven, where David is badly wounded.

Why is the tank empty? The film leaves it unexplained and uses it to set up a search for Michael in a sequel. It could be argued that the choice also makes the middle of the film feel thin, because Michael is found and lost within a few scenes after a long build up. Perhaps that is the cost of a story that wants Selene, as a mother, to choose Eve over Michael in the moment.

Did the sequel pay it off? Sony's distribution chief Rory Bruer told TheWrap he would be surprised if there were no fifth film, and underworld blood wars followed. It brings back David and Thomas, and its setup has the Lycan leader Marius wanting Selene's help finding Eve. For the long view, see the underworld timeline and the corvinus bloodline explainer.

Where Was Underworld: Awakening Filmed?

The filming locations for Underworld: Awakening have not been published in studio or trade coverage of the film. For other shoots in the saga, see underworld 2003, underworld rise of the lycans and underworld blood wars.
