Logan 2017 Plot: What Is the Setup?

Logan (2017) is set in 2029, a time when no new mutants have been born for years, and it follows an ailing Logan who is trying to keep a failing Charles Xavier hidden and safe.

Logan is worn down and ill, and his healing power is fading. He works as a limo driver near the Mexican border, and he hides in a remote industrial site with the mutant tracker Caliban (Stephen Merchant) and an elderly Xavier, whose failing mind makes his powers dangerous. It is a long way from the school and the uniforms of X-Men (2000), and the film makes you feel that distance from the first scene.

A woman named Gabriela asks Logan to take a young girl called Laura to a safe place up north. He refuses at first. Soon, armed men from a company called Transigen come looking for the girl, and he is pulled into the job whether he likes it or not.

If you are new to the saga, the X-Men movies in order guide shows where this film fits.

What Songs Are in Logan? Soundtrack and Score

Marco Beltrami composed the score for Logan, and it was released as the album "Logan: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" by Lakeshore Records on March 3, 2017. The album is a score release with 25 tracks, so it gathers the music Beltrami wrote for the film rather than a playlist of licensed songs.

Which songs are in Logan? Only one is on record: "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash. It plays over the end credits after the final image of the film, so it arrives once the story has finished and the score has done its work.

  • "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash

That makes the score the main musical presence in Logan, with a single song held back for the close. If you want to hear Beltrami's work on its own, the album is the place to start, and if you only want the closing song, watch for the credits.

For the full run of composers across the saga, see the X-Men soundtrack page.

Logan 2017 Plot Explained in FullSpoilers

The full plot of Logan (2017) is a road movie in which Logan, Charles Xavier and Laura run from Transigen, and it ends with the lab children crossing the border after Logan's death.

In 2029 Logan drives a limo and secretly cares for a sick Xavier, helped by Caliban. A nurse named Gabriela pays him to take Laura to a place called Eden near the Canadian border. Gabriela is killed, and Transigen's security chief, Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook), hunts for Laura with a squad of cyborg soldiers. Caliban is captured and forced to track the girl.

Logan learns that Laura was grown in a lab from mutant DNA, as one of many children bred to be weapons, and that she is effectively his daughter. That turns a reluctant escort job into a family story. Xavier, Logan and Laura flee across the country and are sheltered for a night by a farming family, the Munsons.

During that night, X-24, a savage clone of Logan made by Transigen, attacks and kills Xavier and the Munson family. Logan buries Xavier, then takes a drug that briefly restores his strength and fights through many of the soldiers.

Logan finds the children from the lab gathered at the border, and the soldiers close in on them. Dr. Rice is killed, and the children overpower Pierce. X-24 stabs Logan, and Laura kills the clone with an adamantium bullet. Logan dies in Laura's arms, telling her not to become the weapon she was built to be. The children bury him, Laura speaks lines from the western Shane, and she turns the cross on his grave on its side into an X before they cross the border.

When and Where Did Logan Premiere?

Logan had its world premiere on February 17, 2017 at the Berlinale Palast in Berlin, screened out of competition at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The theatrical release followed within days in several markets. The UK opened on March 1, 2017, Australia on March 2, 2017, and the US on March 3, 2017. The US date is confirmed, while the UK and Australian dates are reported by Box Office Mojo and TMDB.

The film is certified R in the US, 15 in the UK and MA 15+ in Australia.

Logan Ending Explained: Why Does Laura Turn the Cross?Spoilers

Laura tips the cross on Logan's grave into an X, which, in my opinion, claims the X-Men name for him and for the children who carry on without him.

The ending shows Logan dying after a last fight against his own clone, with Laura beside him. The children bury him in a forest grave, Laura says a few words over it using lines from the western Shane, and then she turns the cross. The children head on toward the border and Canada. The sideways cross is the cleanest image in the film, because it answers the question the title keeps asking: is Logan a man or a weapon?

Here is why the clone matters. X-24 is a savage clone of Logan made by Transigen, and Laura kills it with an adamantium bullet. A copy of Logan is ended by a girl who was built in a lab in much the same way. It could be argued that Logan's last words to Laura, telling her not to become the weapon she was built to be, are the real thesis, and the burial is the proof she heard him.

There is also a quiet echo of the start of the saga. In X-Men (2000), a runaway teenager named Marie meets the drifter Logan in Canada. Seventeen years later, a girl who is almost his own daughter heads north, and this time he does not make it.

Is Logan the best Wolverine film? In my opinion, yes. Mangold had already directed The Wolverine, and here he swaps the Tokyo set pieces for a quiet road movie built around a dying man and a girl who barely speaks, with the Munson farmhouse night as its emotional center. For the full ranking across the saga, see X-Men movies ranked.

Where Was Logan Filmed?

Logan was filmed mainly in New Orleans, Louisiana, with further location work in Mississippi and New Mexico.

The main unit shoot lasted 73 days. Key interiors were built at Big Easy Studios, which sits at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. Mississippi location work included Natchez, and New Mexico location work included Rio Rancho, Abiquiu and Chama.

The story itself travels from the Mexican border toward Canada, and the road movie shape comes from moving between these states. For the order in which all the films take place, see the X-Men timeline.

Logan Trivia

The best known piece of Logan trivia is that Hugh Jackman took a pay cut so the film could carry an R rating, according to Mangold.

Cinematographer John Mathieson shot on Arri Alexa XT and Alexa Mini cameras with Panavision anamorphic lenses, recording in Open Gate mode and cropping to 2.39:1. He cited road movies such as Two-Lane Blacktop and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot as references, and described the look he wanted as a diamond, but rough.

The opening night exterior included a purple lighting tribute to Prince, who died during the shoot. The film had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 17, 2017.

If you want to keep going through Wolverine's story, the Wolverine movies in order guide lays out all three films, and the X-Men movies hub covers the rest of the saga.
