In X-Men (2000), Magneto's plan to turn world leaders into mutants is stopped on the Statue of Liberty, and Wolverine saves Rogue by giving her some of his healing power, which leaves him in a coma. Everything before that moment is a chase around one idea: Magneto needs Rogue.
The film opens in 1944, when young Erik Lehnsherr discovers his magnetic powers while being separated from his family at a camp. In the present, Senator Kelly campaigns for a Mutant Registration Act while Professor Xavier, who runs a school for young mutants, worries about his old friend Magneto. Marie, who goes by Rogue, flees after putting her boyfriend into a coma with a kiss, and she meets the gruff, clawed Logan, who is also called Wolverine. Sabretooth attacks them, but Cyclops and Storm save them and bring them to Xavier's mansion.
Magneto's Brotherhood then kidnaps Kelly, and Magneto uses a machine on him that turns him into a mutant. Kelly escapes, but his new body is unstable. Mystique, disguised as Rogue's friend Bobby, tricks Rogue into leaving the school, and she also sabotages Cerebro, which leaves Xavier in a coma. Logan finds Rogue at a train station and tries to bring her home, but Magneto appears and takes her.
The X-Men learn that Magneto means to use Rogue's absorbing power to run his machine, which would kill her, and that he plans to turn the world leaders gathering at a summit on Ellis Island into mutants. The team fights the Brotherhood on the Statue of Liberty. Cyclops stops Magneto and Logan wrecks the machine. Logan then gives Rogue some of his healing power, which saves her and leaves him in a coma.
