X-Men: Apocalypse Plot: How the Story Begins

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), directed by Bryan Singer, begins in ancient Egypt, where En Sabah Nur, a mutant worshipped as a god, is attacked by his own followers as he tries to move his mind into a new body. He is left entombed under a collapsing pyramid. In 1983 a cult accidentally wakes him, and he finds a modern world that he considers weak and badly led.

He sets out to collect the most powerful mutants he can find. Storm, Psylocke and Angel become his first followers, and he makes each of them stronger than before. The title villain is soon known simply as Apocalypse, and his recruits are the start of the Four Horsemen.

Meanwhile, life at Charles Xavier's school for gifted students carries on, and it takes in new young students such as Scott Summers, who soon meets Jean Grey. Moira MacTaggert, now a CIA agent, links the awakening to the ancient mutant, and Erik Lehnsherr, living quietly in Poland as a factory worker, suffers a terrible loss. The setup is crowded, with several storylines that all head toward the same collision.

What Songs Are in X-Men: Apocalypse? Soundtrack and Score

John Ottman composed the score for X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and Sony Classical released the album "X-Men: Apocalypse: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" on May 20, 2016. That album is a score release running to 25 tracks, so it is the place to hear Ottman's music for the film as a full listening experience.

Ottman is the only composer credited for the score, and the album is the only soundtrack release recorded for the film, which keeps the music side of the film simple to follow.

Which songs are in X-Men: Apocalypse? Two recordings by established acts are credited alongside the score:

  • "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics
  • "The Four Horsemen" by Metallica

The two songs are separate credits from Ottman's orchestral work, one from Eurythmics and one from Metallica, and no source lists either as written for the film. Fans of the score can start with the 25 track album, while anyone chasing the songs can search for the Eurythmics and Metallica titles by name. For composers across the saga, see the x men soundtrack page.

Full Plot Summary: What Happens in X-Men: ApocalypseSpoilers

In X-Men: Apocalypse, En Sabah Nur gathers four Horsemen and nearly takes over Xavier's body, and he is stopped only when Jean Grey lets her full Phoenix power loose.

Erik Lehnsherr loses his wife and daughter in Poland when his powers are revealed, and that grief pushes him into joining Apocalypse as the fourth Horseman. Apocalypse then uses Cerebro to reach minds across the planet, and he tries to take over Xavier's body. The mansion is wrecked and Xavier is captured.

Colonel Stryker takes several young mutants prisoner, but Scott, Jean and Kurt Wagner break them out of his facility. They are helped by a brief encounter with the caged Weapon X, who is Wolverine in all but name. Xavier's former students then launch a rescue at Apocalypse's base in Cairo.

The finale runs on two fronts. Magneto tears the world's metal apart while Apocalypse prepares to move his mind into Xavier. Xavier fights him on the mental plane and keeps him busy long enough for Magneto and Storm to turn on their master. Jean then unleashes the full Phoenix, and Apocalypse is destroyed.

That is a lot of plot for 144 minutes, and it is easier to follow as three strands: the recruitment of the Horsemen, the school and its new students, and the Stryker prison break that leads to the Cairo fight.

X-Men: Apocalypse premiered in London on May 9, 2016, opened in the UK and Australia on May 19, 2016, and reached US theaters on May 27, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of X-Men: Apocalypse resets the board for a new team: Apocalypse is dead, Xavier and Moira are reconciled, and the school has a fresh generation of students to train.

After Jean destroys Apocalypse, Xavier restores Moira's memories of him, and the two reconcile. Erik helps rebuild the school but turns down an offer to stay as a teacher, and Peter keeps his link to Erik to himself for the moment. Hank and Raven train a new team made up of Scott, Jean, Ororo, Kurt and Peter, which sets up the future X-Men.

In my opinion, this is the most important beat in the film. The line up that gathers at the end features the younger versions of Scott, Jean and Ororo, who appear older in X-Men (2000). Erik walking away fits his character, and it is a reminder that he is never fully part of the school. His grief in Poland also echoes the opening of X-Men (2000), where a young Erik bends a metal gate at Auschwitz after being torn from his parents. Both films tie his powers to a family loss, and, as such, his turn to Apocalypse feels like a repeat of old pain rather than a new idea.

Why does Jean finish the fight? In my opinion, it is the film's clearest piece of planning. Magneto and Storm turn on their master, and Xavier holds Apocalypse on the mental plane, but it is Jean letting her full Phoenix power loose that destroys him. That sets up dark phoenix, where Simon Kinberg, a credited writer and producer here, directs a whole film about her.

The Weapon X sequence deserves a comparison too. Stryker, played here by Josh Helman as he was in x men days of future past, holds the caged mutant, and Hugh Jackman's uncredited appearance gives a nod to x men origins wolverine. It could be argued that the brief cameo does more for the series than the Cairo finale, since it connects the younger cast to the Wolverine story without a lengthy detour.

Is Apocalypse actually the first mutant? The film presents him as exactly that. What is his actual power? On screen he can move his mind into a new body, make other mutants stronger and use Cerebro to reach minds worldwide.

Why was it hated by some viewers? It could be argued that the film asks a lot of its ensemble, with 15 billed cast members and a villain who spends much of the story recruiting. Production context may help: the team built nearly 60 sets in Montreal, including a Cairo pyramid made from an old factory, according to Screen Global Production and The Irish News, so the spectacle was not cheap. That being said, the Quicksilver sequence, which ran about two minutes and took more than six weeks to shoot, and the Phoenix finale are the parts I would point a newcomer to.

Is There a Post Credit Scene in X-Men: Apocalypse?Spoilers

Yes, X-Men: Apocalypse has one post credit scene, and it sets up Mister Sinister.

After the credits, Essex Corporation people take vials of blood from Weapon X's escape and place them in a briefcase marked with the Essex name. That is the link to Mister Sinister, and it ties back to the earlier Weapon X sequence in which Hugh Jackman appears uncredited.

The scene is short and gives no payoff within the film. The next main film in the saga is dark phoenix.

Where Was X-Men: Apocalypse Filmed?

X-Men: Apocalypse was filmed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with principal photography beginning in April 2015 at Mel's Cite du Cinema.

The studio hosted nearly 60 sets, including the X-Mansion and the Egyptian settings, and a Cairo pyramid was built from an old factory. Additional filming and reshoots took place in Montreal in January 2016.

Quebec offers a 20% base filming incentive and a 16% tax credit for visual effects work, and the Montreal shoot used them. That helps explain how a story spanning ancient Egypt, Poland and 1983 could be made so largely in one city, with much of the sense of place coming from production design.

X-Men: Apocalypse Trivia

X-Men: Apocalypse trivia covers its Montreal sets, Oscar Isaac's prosthetics, a Wolverine cameo and the scale of its costume department.

  • Principal photography began in Montreal in April 2015, and the production built nearly 60 sets there.
  • Dressing Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse took three people about half an hour, and his prosthetics covered most of his face and head.
  • James McAvoy shaved his head for the role of Professor X.
  • Evan Peters' Quicksilver sequence ran about two minutes and took more than six weeks to shoot.
  • Angel's wings were never built physically because they were impractical on set, so visual effects handled them.
  • Hugh Jackman has an uncredited cameo as Wolverine in the Weapon X scenes.
  • The production gathered almost 100,000 wardrobe pieces and dressed 2,000 to 3,000 people.

Facts

FAQs

Why did the X-Men Apocalypse fail?

By the numbers it was not a flop, since it grossed $544 million worldwide on a $178 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, about three times its cost. It did earn less than X-Men: Days of Future Past, and the later Dark Phoenix earned less again, so the younger cast saga ended on a downward curve.

Is Apocalypse actually the first mutant?

The film presents En Sabah Nur as the first mutant. He is worshipped as a god in ancient Egypt, entombed after his followers turn on him, and awakened in 1983.

What was the point of the X-Men Apocalypse?

The story closes the younger cast trilogy by bringing together the team that will become the X-Men. It adds Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Ororo Munroe and Kurt Wagner as students, then ends with Hank and Raven training them.

Why was X-Men: Apocalypse so hated?

No single reason is recorded. Some viewers argue that the ensemble is too crowded and that the villain spends much of the film recruiting, but these are opinions rather than measured facts.

Is X-Men: Apocalypse supposed to be a prequel?

Yes, in story terms. It follows X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past, is set in 1983, and shows younger versions of Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops, who appear older in X-Men (2000). It is eighth in chronological order and ninth in release order.

What is Apocalypse's actual power?

On screen, En Sabah Nur can move his mind into a new body and make other mutants stronger. He also uses Cerebro to reach minds across the planet, which is how he tries to take over Xavier.
