X-Men Cast: Every Main Actor by Film

The X-Men cast changes with each era, so the clearest way to read it is film by film. Each film's top billed actors are listed with their character names as credited. For the full film list, see x men movies, and for the viewing sequence see x men movies in order.

Who Were the Actors in the Original X-Men Movie?

The original X-Men movie, X-Men (2000), directed by Bryan Singer, starred Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Halle Berry and Anna Paquin in its seven top billings. Tyler Mane played Sabretooth, Ray Park played Toad, Rebecca Romijn played Mystique and Bruce Davison played Senator Kelly. In the film's opening sequence at Auschwitz in 1944, the young Erik Lehnsherr is played by Brett Morris, so the Magneto role is split between two actors from the first scene. If you want the character side of this, the x men characters page covers each hero and villain.

Women in the X-Men Cast

The women in the X-Men cast include Famke Janssen, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin and Rebecca Romijn in the original trilogy, and Jennifer Lawrence, Rose Byrne and January Jones in First Class. Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp took over Jean Grey and Storm in Apocalypse, and Dafne Keen played Laura opposite Jackman in Logan. Spinoff leads include Morena Baccarin and Zazie Beetz in the Deadpool films, plus Blu Hunt, Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy in The New Mutants. In the new film, Sadie Sink, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd and Samara Weaving are the women confirmed so far.

New X-Men Cast: The Marvel Studios Reboot

The new X-Men cast was announced by Marvel Studios at Disney's D23 Expo in August 2026, and the film is dated for May 5, 2028 in US theaters. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, Kit Connor plays Scott Summers / Cyclops, Christopher Abbott plays Charles Xavier / Professor X, Inde Navarrette plays Rogue, Maya Boyd plays Ororo Munroe / Storm, Samara Weaving plays Emma Frost and Adam Driver plays Nathaniel Milbury / Mister Sinister. All seven are confirmed. Two further names are reported but not officially announced: Collider reports Asa Germann as Angel and Ben Wang as Bobby Drake / Iceman, with Wang's deal not yet closed. Charles Melton is rumored for Hank McCoy / Beast, and that remains unconfirmed. The full status of the project sits on the new x men movie page, and the first footage will appear under new x men movie trailer.

Who Directed the X-Men Movies?

Nine directors have made the Fox X-Men films, and Bryan Singer directed the most main saga entries with four. Jake Schreier is the director of the new Marvel Studios film.

Tim MillerDeadpool (2016)
David LeitchDeadpool 2 (2018)
Simon KinbergDark Phoenix (2019)
Josh BooneThe New Mutants (2020)

Singer set the tone with X-Men (2000) and X2, then came back for Days of Future Past, which brought the two casts together, and Apocalypse. Ratner took over for The Last Stand, and Gavin Hood directed the first Wolverine spinoff. Matthew Vaughn was named as First Class director when Fox set its June 3, 2011 date, according to Variety, and the film moved the saga back to 1962 with a new ensemble. James Mangold is the only director to make two Wolverine films, and his Logan carried an R rating, while the other Jackman led films, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine, are PG-13.

The Deadpool films have a handover of their own. Deadpool was Tim Miller's directing debut, and TheWrap reported that Miller left the sequel, with composer Tom Holkenborg also leaving, before David Leitch directed Deadpool 2. Simon Kinberg directed Dark Phoenix, and Josh Boone directed The New Mutants, which was shot around Medfield State Hospital.

Composers and Other Crew

A different composer scored almost every film. Michael Kamen scored X-Men (2000), John Ottman scored X2, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse, John Powell scored The Last Stand, and Harry Gregson-Williams scored X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Henry Jackman scored First Class, Marco Beltrami scored The Wolverine and Logan, Tom Holkenborg scored Deadpool, Tyler Bates scored Deadpool 2, Hans Zimmer scored Dark Phoenix and Mark Snow scored The New Mutants. For the music itself, see x men soundtrack.

New Film Crew

Jake Schreier is confirmed as director of the Marvel Studios X-Men film, following a May 2025 report from TheWrap that he was in early talks. Collider reports that Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo wrote the script and that Kevin Feige produces. Earlier coverage had credited Michael Lesslie as screenwriter, so the writing credit has been reported differently over time.

Returning and Recast: Who Plays Whom Across Eras

Only a few X-Men roles have stayed with one actor, and Hugh Jackman is the clearest case, with a billed role as Logan in seven Fox films from X-Men (2000) to Logan (2017). Most other characters have been played by different actors in each era, which is why a cast list alone can confuse a first time viewer. I will take this in the way a comics reader would, by character.

Charles Xavier and Magneto. Patrick Stewart played Xavier in X-Men (2000), X2, The Last Stand, Days of Future Past and Logan, and Ian McKellen played Magneto in the first three and Days of Future Past. James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender play the younger versions in First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. Days of Future Past is the one film in which both pairs share a story, so it is the natural place to compare them. In the new film, Christopher Abbott takes Xavier, and no Magneto casting has been announced.

Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm. Famke Janssen played Jean Grey in the original trilogy and returned in The Wolverine, Sophie Turner took over in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, and Sadie Sink is next. Cyclops passes from James Marsden, through Tim Pocock as the young Scott Summers in Origins, to Tye Sheridan, and now to Kit Connor. Halle Berry played Storm across the original trilogy and Days of Future Past, Alexandra Shipp took the role in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, and Maya Boyd is the new Storm.

Mystique, Beast and Rogue. Rebecca Romijn played Mystique in the first three films, and Jennifer Lawrence played Raven / Mystique across four prequel era films. Kelsey Grammer played Beast in The Last Stand, Nicholas Hoult took over from First Class onward, and Charles Melton is rumored but not confirmed for the new film. Anna Paquin played Rogue in the original trilogy and Days of Future Past, and Inde Navarrette is the new Rogue.

Smaller recasts. Brian Cox, Danny Huston and Josh Helman each played William Stryker. Alan Cumming and Kodi Smit-McPhee played Nightcrawler. Ben Foster and Ben Hardy played Angel, and Asa Germann is reported for the new film. Shawn Ashmore played Iceman, and Ben Wang is reported for the role. Evan Peters played Quicksilver in Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. Ryan Reynolds appears as Wade Wilson in Origins before playing Deadpool in the two solo films. Emma Frost has gone from January Jones in First Class to Samara Weaving in the new film.

In my opinion, the Fox saga was at its best when it let a recast breathe, as First Class did by building new chemistry rather than imitating Stewart and McKellen, and Marvel faces the same test with a full ensemble reset. It could be argued that the most interesting new casting is Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, since he gives the film a villain with a clear identity before any footage exists. Marvel has not said whether anyone from the Fox films returns, so any such talk is speculation. To see how each hero fits the story, read wolverine x men, professor x and magneto, or check x men powers for abilities.
