Mystique X-Men: Raven Darkholme and the Actresses Who Play Her
Mystique in X-Men is Raven Darkholme, a shapeshifting mutant played by Rebecca Romijn in X-Men (2000), X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, and by Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix. She appears in all seven main Fox films, moving from Magneto's disguise artist to a reluctant ally of Charles Xavier, and she dies in Dark Phoenix (2019).
Who Plays Raven Darkholme / Mystique?
Who Is Mystique in the X-Men Films?
Mystique is the shapeshifting mutant Raven Darkholme, and she is one of the few characters in the Fox saga played by two different actresses. Rebecca Romijn plays her in x men 2000, x2 x men united and x men the last stand, while Jennifer Lawrence plays the younger Raven in x men first class, x men days of future past, x men apocalypse and dark phoenix.
Her power is shapeshifting, and the films use it for infiltration more than for brawling. In X-Men (2000), directed by Bryan Singer, she poses as Rogue's friend Bobby to lure the girl out of Xavier's school, and she later escapes by posing as Senator Kelly. In X2 (2003) she turns up as Wolverine himself.
The credits give her several names. X-Men (2000) lists her simply as Mystique. X2, The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix use Raven Darkholme / Mystique, and First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse use Raven / Mystique. Raven is the name Charles Xavier knows her by when they meet in 1944 in First Class.

Mystique's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
Mystique's arc runs from Xavier's adopted sister to Magneto's operative and, in the end, to the woman who spares a life, although the saga was released in a different order from the one it is set in. In release order she begins as Magneto's agent in 2000 and ends as a casualty of the Phoenix in 2019.
In First Class (2011), directed by Matthew Vaughn, young Charles Xavier meets the shapeshifter Raven in 1944 and welcomes her into his home. By 1962 Charles and Erik are recruiting young mutants to fight Sebastian Shaw. At the end of the film, after Erik takes the name Magneto and leaves, Raven chooses to follow him rather than stay with Charles.
Days of Future Past (2014) puts her at the center of the plot. Xavier and Magneto, now allies in a ruined 2023, send Wolverine's consciousness to 1973 to stop Mystique from killing Bolivar Trask, whose death led to the Sentinel program. Her attempt in Paris fails and she is captured, and her exposure persuades President Nixon to approve the Sentinels. Xavier reaches her and persuades her not to kill, and she turns back from the shot at Trask. She then saves Nixon and his cabinet, and the grim timeline is erased.
Apocalypse (2016) finds her helping Hank McCoy train a new team made up of Scott, Jean, Ororo, Kurt and Peter.
Romijn's version is the Brotherhood operative of the original films. She sabotages Cerebro in X-Men (2000), helps Magneto escape before X2, and guides the X-Men into Stryker's dam disguised as Wolverine before slipping away with Magneto. So, is she a hero or a villain? It depends on the era: the Romijn films keep her with Magneto, while the Lawrence films have her spare Trask and train young X-Men before Dark Phoenix ends her story.
Mystique's Relationships: Magneto, Xavier, Rogue and Beast
Mystique's closest ties are to Magneto and Charles Xavier, and the films show her choosing between them more than once. In First Class she is effectively Xavier's adopted sister, and the film ends with her leaving his house to follow Erik.
Magneto is her most consistent partner. In the original films she acts on his behalf, from the Cerebro sabotage in X-Men (2000) to the help that lets him escape and rescue the X-Men's team in X2. In Dark Phoenix, Hank McCoy joins Magneto after her death.
Professor X is the one who turns her back in Days of Future Past, when he persuades her not to kill Trask. The two also face the choice that splits the saga: Xavier wants mutants to live alongside humans, and Magneto does not.
Rogue is her target in X-Men (2000), when Mystique disguises herself as Bobby to trick the girl into leaving the school. Beast works beside her in Apocalypse, where Hank and Raven train the next team. Jean Grey accidentally kills her in Dark Phoenix. Wolverine connects to her through Days of Future Past, where his mind is sent back to 1973 on a mission built around stopping the killing of Trask.
Nightcrawler, the blue-skinned teleporter Kurt Wagner, shares screen time with her in two films. In X2 Alan Cumming plays him as the mutant who attacks the President and is manipulated by Stryker, and he joins the uneasy alliance that Mystique, disguised as Wolverine, helps into the dam at Alkali Lake. In Apocalypse Kodi Smit-McPhee plays the younger Kurt, one of the students Hank and Raven train at the end. Neither film's main storyline names his biological parents, so no on-screen link between Kurt and Raven is established.
What Happens to Mystique? Her Fate in Dark PhoenixSpoilers
Mystique dies in Dark Phoenix (2019), directed by Simon Kinberg, when Jean Grey accidentally kills Raven during one violent outburst of her unstable cosmic power. Hank McCoy blames Jean for it and joins Magneto, who wants to hunt her down.
That makes Lawrence's Raven the one whose arc is closed on screen.
On the future, Marvel Studios has an untitled X-Men film dated for May 5, 2028 in US theaters, directed by Jake Schreier. TheWrap reports a D23 cast announcement on August 14, 2026 naming Christopher Abbott, Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd and Adam Driver, but it does not say which characters they play, so no casting for Mystique is confirmed. See the new x men movie page for the latest.
Mystique's Best Moments: My Picks
In my opinion, Mystique's best scene is in Days of Future Past, where she goes to Paris to kill Trask, fails and is captured. It matters because the film is built on her choice: the failed attempt is what convinces Nixon to approve the Sentinels, and her later decision to spare Trask is what erases the bleak 2023. It could be argued that no other character in the saga carries a plot on a single decision quite this way.
My second pick is smaller. In X-Men (2000) she poses as Rogue's friend Bobby and talks the girl out of the school, a quiet use of her power that shows why the character works: she does not need a fight to wreck the X-Men's plans. The same idea returns in X2, where she walks the team into Stryker's dam as Wolverine, and I think that is the funniest use of the power in the Romijn films.
That being said, the ending of Apocalypse, where Raven and Hank train the new team, is the most hopeful note she gets. Perhaps that is why her death in Dark Phoenix lands as hard as it does.

FAQs
Who is the Mystique in X-Men?
Mystique is Raven Darkholme, a shapeshifting mutant who appears in all seven main Fox X-Men films. Rebecca Romijn plays her in X-Men (2000), X2 and The Last Stand, and Jennifer Lawrence plays her in First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
What is Mystique's power?
Mystique can change her shape to look like other people. In the films she poses as Rogue's friend Bobby and as Senator Kelly in X-Men (2000), and as Wolverine in X2.
Is Mystique a hero or a villain?
She is both, depending on the era. In the original films she works with Magneto, and in Days of Future Past she spares Trask and saves President Nixon after Xavier persuades her. In Apocalypse she helps train a new team of X-Men.
Why is Raven called Mystique?
Raven is her given name, which Charles Xavier uses when they meet in First Class, and Mystique is the name she goes by as a mutant. The credits join the two as Raven Darkholme / Mystique, but the films' main storylines never explain where the codename came from.
Who are Nightcrawler's biological parents?
The Fox films do not name them in the main storylines of X2 or Apocalypse. Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) is played by Alan Cumming in X2 and Kodi Smit-McPhee in Apocalypse, and Mystique appears alongside him in both, but neither film states a family link.
Is Mystique into Wolverine?
No romance between them appears in the films' storylines. Her main link to Wolverine is a disguise: in X2 she appears as him to help the team into Stryker's base at Alkali Lake. In Days of Future Past his mission in 1973 is built around preventing the killing of Trask.
