Cyclops X-Men: Scott Summers, His Actors and His Story in the Films

Cyclops is Scott Summers, a member of Professor Xavier's X-Men team in the Fox films, played by James Marsden in the original trilogy and by Tye Sheridan in the later timeline. The credits use several forms of his name: "Cyclops" for Marsden in X-Men (2000), "Scott Summers / Cyclops" in X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, and plain "Scott Summers" for Tim Pocock in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Two actors carry the part across the saga. Marsden is billed fifth in the first film, fourth in X2 and eighth in The Last Stand. Sheridan is billed tenth in Apocalypse and fourth in Dark Phoenix. So, if you are asking who the first Cyclops in the X-Men films was, the answer is Marsden, in a film directed by Bryan Singer and released in the US on July 14, 2000.

Jean Grey defines Cyclops on screen more than anyone, followed by his place beside Xavier and Storm. Is Cyclops married to Jean Grey in the movies? No wedding between them features in the stories of these six films, but the films keep placing the two together: Jean frees him in X2, she kills him in The Last Stand, and the two meet at Xavier's school in Apocalypse.

Professor Xavier runs the school where Scott lives and trains. In X2 Xavier and Cyclops are captured together, and Cyclops stays under Stryker's mind control until Jean breaks it. Storm is his partner on the rescue in the first film, when she and Cyclops pull Logan and Rogue away from Sabretooth. After he dies in The Last Stand, Storm takes over the team and later the school.

Wolverine is the more awkward connection. He is the newcomer Cyclops helps rescue in 2000, and in The Last Stand he is the one forced to kill Jean after she has killed Scott. In Apocalypse, Scott and Jean pass the caged Weapon X during their escape from Stryker's facility. The key figures here are Jean Grey, Professor X, Storm and Magneto, whom Cyclops stops in 2000.

In my opinion, the best Cyclops moments come when the films let him solve a problem rather than stand beside the louder characters. The first is the Statue of Liberty finale in X-Men (2000), where Cyclops stops Magneto while Wolverine destroys the machine. It is a team set piece, and it is the film's clearest proof that Scott is more than a background player.

The second is the rescue in X2. Cyclops spends much of the film as a captive, so it could be argued that his best scene is the one where Jean frees him from mind control at Alkali Lake. It gives the Jean and Scott pairing a real payoff just before The Last Stand takes it away.

The third is his arrival in Apocalypse. Meeting Jean at the school in 1983 and then helping her and Kurt escape Stryker's facility gives Tye Sheridan a stronger introduction than his predecessor got as a farewell.
