Main Divergent Characters
Who Are the Main Divergent Characters?Spoilers
The main Divergent characters are Beatrice 'Tris' Prior and Tobias 'Four' Eaton, the pair at the center of all three films, set against the Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews, a circle of Dauntless friends and rivals, and the Factionless leader Evelyn Johnson-Eaton. Eight characters have their own pages, and each is introduced below, followed by an analysis of how the roles change and a table of the principal roles. For the full credits, see the Divergent cast page, and for the world they live in, see the Divergent factions guide. Spoilers for all three films follow.
The Leads: Tris and Four
Tris Prior, played by Shailene Woodley, is the female lead and the character the whole saga follows. She grows up in selfless Abnegation, discovers at her aptitude test that she matches several factions, and chooses Dauntless at the choosing ceremony in Divergent (2014). Her fear simulations show a mind that finds a way out, which is the mark of being Divergent. By Insurgent she carries heavy guilt over the deaths she caused, including Will, a friend of Christina, and in Allegiant she is the first person the Bureau of Genetic Welfare sees show the result it wanted.
Four, whose full name is Tobias Eaton and who is played by Theo James, is her Dauntless instructor and later her partner. He notices her Divergent mind early and helps her hide it, and Tris learns that he is Divergent too. Controlled by Jeanine's serum, he nearly shoots Tris before she brings him back to his senses. In Insurgent his mother Evelyn wants him to help her form an army against Erudite, and he refuses her plan. In Allegiant he is the one who persuades her to stop the memory wiping gas.
The Antagonists: Jeanine, Eric and the Dauntless Leaders
The main villain of the first two films is Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite leader played by Kate Winslet. She stirs up distrust of Abnegation, uses a serum to place Dauntless members under remote control, and sends them to attack Abnegation in Divergent (2014). In Insurgent she declares martial law and hunts the Divergent for the sake of a box that only an exceptional Divergent can open. She is arrested at the end of that film, and Evelyn later kills her in her cell.
The Dauntless leaders Eric Coulter (Jai Courtney) and Max (Mekhi Phifer) stand with her in Insurgent. They capture Tris because her test results show she can open the box, and Eric dies in the escape after Four rescues her. In Allegiant the opposition changes shape: David, played by Jeff Daniels, leads the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, and his willingness to erase memories makes him the threat of the final film.
The Dauntless Circle: Peter, Christina and Others
The Dauntless characters in the story include Tris, Four, Peter, Eric and Max. Peter Hayes, played by Miles Teller, is the aggressive trainee who targets Tris during initiation. His loyalties shift across the saga: in Insurgent he helps Tris fake her death so she can reach the simulation room, and in Allegiant he shoots Evelyn in the leg after realizing David has betrayed him, then opens the vault so Tris and Four can halt the gas.
Christina, played by Zoë Kravitz, is Tris's closest friend and appears in all three films. Her friendship is tested in Insurgent when Tris admits she killed Will, and she goes over the wall with the group in Allegiant. Tori Wu, played by Maggie Q, is the aptitude test administrator who secretly changes Tris's record and warns her to hide her result. She dies in Allegiant when Edgar's guards pursue the group, and Uriah Pedrad (Keiynan Lonsdale) is also part of the Allegiant cast.
Family and Factionless: Caleb, Evelyn and Marcus
Caleb Prior, played by Ansel Elgort, is Tris's brother. He escapes the city with her at the end of Divergent (2014), sides with Erudite in Insurgent, and in Allegiant helps Tris destroy the gas hub. It is Caleb who blows up David's hovercar, which breaks the cloaking shield and exposes the Bureau.
Evelyn Johnson-Eaton, played by Naomi Watts, leads the Factionless in Insurgent and wants an army to use against Erudite. By Allegiant she has closed Chicago's wall and put Jeanine's supporters on trial, which prompts Johanna Reyes (Octavia Spencer) to turn against her. Marcus, played by Ray Stevenson, appears in Divergent (2014) and Insurgent, and is credited as Marcus Eaton in the second film.
How Do the Villains and Allies Change Across the Films?
In my opinion, the saga is best read as a story in which the threat moves from a person to a system, and the supporting roles shift to match. Jeanine is the clearest case. In Divergent (2014) Kate Winslet is billed twelfth, yet Jeanine drives the plot through the serum attack on Abnegation; by Insurgent she is billed fourth, which fits a film built around her hunt for the box. Her death in Evelyn's hands leaves Allegiant without a single face for the opposition, and it could be argued that David, who works through memory wiping gas rather than open force, is a quieter and less personal antagonist than Jeanine was.
The allies move in the opposite direction. Peter Hayes is billed seventh in Divergent (2014) and third in both sequels, so the character who begins as Tris's tormentor becomes one of the three most prominent supporting roles, and the vault scene in Allegiant is the payoff for that arc. Evelyn mirrors the pattern: Naomi Watts is billed ninth in Insurgent and fifth in Allegiant as the Factionless leader becomes a ruler, closing the wall and putting Jeanine's supporters on trial, which makes her the new danger that Four has to talk down. Tori is a smaller case, since her one act in the first film, falsifying Tris's aptitude test record, sets up the whole story, and her death in Allegiant is the saga's first loss of a Dauntless ally outside Tris's family.
Production changes shaped some of this. Robert Schwentke replaced Neil Burger as director for Insurgent, with Burger moving to executive producer, and Joseph Trapanese took over the score from Junkie XL, according to Film Music Reporter. Compared with the first film, which stays inside one faction's training, the two sequels move through Amity, Candor, the Factionless and finally the Bureau, so each film introduces a new set of characters and leaves some of the earlier ones with less to do. That being said, Tris, Four, Caleb, Christina and Peter are the five roles that carry through all three films.

Is There a New Divergent Film With These Characters?
No new Divergent film has been announced with a release date. The fourth film, Ascendant, was planned as a theatrical release, redeveloped as a TV movie and then a Starz series, and was never made; Roth has said it will never be made. Roth's new alternate universe novel, The Sixth Faction, was due in October 2026, and she has reportedly said a film of it is possible, but no studio or deal has been announced. Any update will appear on the Divergent Ascendant page. All three films are covered in the Divergent movies hub.
