About the Release Order
The Divergent films were released in this order: Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016), with one film arriving each March in the US. That is also the order for anyone searching for the Divergent trilogy movies in order, since there are no other theatrical entries to place around them.
- Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, released in US theaters on March 21, 2014, with a runtime of 140 minutes. Shailene Woodley plays Tris and Theo James plays Four. It sets up a walled future Chicago split into five factions: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite.
- Insurgent (2015), directed by Robert Schwentke, released in the US on March 20, 2015, with a runtime of 119 minutes. Tris and Four are on the run from Jeanine Matthews and the Erudite faction.
- Allegiant (2016), also directed by Robert Schwentke, released in the US on March 18, 2016, with a runtime of 120 minutes. It follows the group after Evelyn Johnson-Eaton takes control of the city and closes the wall.
The order does not change by country, although the gaps do. In the UK, Divergent (2014) opened on April 4, 2014, Insurgent on March 20, 2015 and Allegiant a week early on March 11, 2016. In Australia the dates were April 10, 2014, March 19, 2015 and April 14, 2016. Box Office Mojo is the source for all three markets, apart from the US date for Insurgent, which Screen Daily reported.
The series is also known as The Divergent Series, and the Insurgent soundtrack album carries the full title The Divergent Series: Insurgent. In 2015 the titles of the final two films were announced as Allegiant and Ascendant, with Ascendant penciled in for spring 2017, according to The Christian Science Monitor.
There is no fourth film to add to the end of the list. The reasons are covered in the section on where to start, and Divergent Ascendant has its own page for the status of any revival.
About the Chronological Order
Yes, the Divergent movies in chronological order are the same as the release order: Divergent (2014), Insurgent and Allegiant. Each film continues the story of the one before it, and none of the films is a prequel or a flashback.
Insurgent opens days after the Erudite faction's attack on Abnegation, with Jeanine Matthews declaring martial law and hunting the Divergent, people who do not fit a single faction. Allegiant begins in a Chicago left in turmoil after the old faction system has fallen, with Evelyn in control and Jeanine's supporters on trial. Nothing in the films calls for reshuffling them, so the chronological sequence needs no separate list.
Running times add up to 379 minutes: 140 for Divergent (2014), 119 for Insurgent and 120 for Allegiant, which makes a long weekend marathon realistic.
There are no shorts, TV specials or spin-off films to slot in. Ascendant would have followed Allegiant had it been made, so it would also have been last in either order. For the wider story across the films, the Divergent timeline lays out the events, and the Divergent characters page covers the people involved, from Tris Prior and Four to Jeanine Matthews.
Where to Start With the Divergent Series
Start with Divergent (2014) and watch the three films straight through, because the series gives you no reason to do anything else. In my opinion, it is the only film that explains the faction system properly, and both sequels assume you already know why a person who fits several factions is dangerous.
What if you only have time for two? It could be argued that Divergent (2014) and Insurgent are the better pair. Insurgent made about $297 million worldwide on a $110 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo, which was the best result of the three. Allegiant took about $179 million on the same budget. Because Allegiant was planned to lead into a fourth film, perhaps it does not feel like a full stop in the way many trilogy finales do, so I would treat it as the last chapter rather than a stand alone ending.
Why was there never a Divergent 4? Allegiant (2016) performed weakly, and on July 20, 2016 Slashfilm reported that Ascendant would move to a TV movie. Schwentke's exit from Ascendant had been reported earlier, on February 9, 2016, by Deadline according to ScreenCrush. The TV version never came to anything, and Roth has said in 2023 that Ascendant will never be made. Lionsgate's plans for a final film were scrapped.
Is anything coming? As of November 3, 2026, no new Divergent film has been announced or dated. Roth has a new novel, The Sixth Faction, which Cinefilos reported was due on October 6, 2026, with a second book following in February 2027. No film of it has been announced, so any adaptation is speculation only.
If you have read the novels, the Divergent books vs movies page covers the differences, and the Divergent factions guide is a useful refresher. To rank them once you finish, see Divergent movies ranked.
As for streaming, JustWatch data on TMDB, checked on November 3, 2026, shows none of the three films on Netflix in the US, UK or Australia. Subscription options included Amazon channels in the US, HBO Max and Now TV Cinema in the UK, and Paramount Plus and Stan in Australia. Availability changes often, so check where to watch Divergent before you plan a marathon.
