Divergent Timeline: The Story of the Films in Order
The Divergent timeline is a single straight line across three films, Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016), so release order and story order are the same. A planned fourth film, Ascendant, was never made, which means the screen story ends with the Chicago experiment exposed and the world beyond the wall still unexplored.
The Divergent Timeline in Order
Divergent (2014): Where Does the Divergent Series Timeline Begin?Spoilers
The Divergent series timeline begins in a walled future Chicago, where society is split into five factions (Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless and Erudite), each built around a single virtue. Divergent (2014), directed by Neil Burger, reached US theaters on 21 March 2014 and sets up everything that follows. Beatrice Prior, who has grown up in selfless Abnegation, takes her aptitude test and the administrator, Tori, finds that she matches several factions. Tori alters the record and warns her to hide it, and at the choosing ceremony Beatrice leaves her family for Dauntless.
From there the film follows her initiation. She renames herself Tris, and the trainees are ranked, with the lowest cut and left factionless. Her instructor, who goes by Four, pushes the recruits hard, while a rival named Peter targets her. Tris improves through fear simulations in which she can often think her way out, a sign of her Divergent mind, and Four helps her hide it. Outside the training grounds, the Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews stirs up public distrust of Abnegation, which runs the government.
The climax is a large event: Dauntless members are injected with a serum that places them under remote control, and Jeanine sends them against Abnegation. Tris's parents are both killed. Four is controlled and nearly shoots Tris before she brings him back to his senses, and the pair reach the Erudite headquarters and halt the attack. She and her allies, including her brother Caleb Prior, leave the city by train. Jeanine remains in power. For a closer look at the film itself, see divergent 2014.
Insurgent (2015): What Happens After the Attack on Abnegation?Spoilers
Insurgent (2015), directed by Robert Schwentke, is the middle chapter of the screen timeline, and it turns a single night of violence into a nationwide manhunt. It reached US theaters on 20 March 2015. Beatrice 'Tris' Prior wakes into a Chicago where Jeanine Matthews rules and the Divergent are officially enemies. Jeanine's circle has a box carrying all five faction symbols, and only a Divergent of exceptional ability can open it, so Tris becomes the prize.
The story then moves through three faction settings in turn. First, Tris, Four, Caleb and Peter hide in Amity until Dauntless soldiers force them out. Next, a train ride brings them to the Factionless and Four's mother, Evelyn Johnson-Eaton, who wants an army and is refused by her son. Finally, Candor puts Tris and Four on trial under truth serum, where she admits she killed Will, a friend of Christina. That confession costs her some trust. Eric Coulter and Max take her because her test results show she can open the box, and Eric dies when Four rescues her.
The closing section is a chain of simulations inside Erudite. Mind control drives Dauntless captives toward a ledge, and Tris surrenders to end it. Caleb sides with Erudite, while Peter helps her fake her death and reach the simulation room. She passes the last test, and the box delivers a recording: the city and its factions are an experiment, and the world outside is waiting. The Factionless free her and Four, Jeanine is arrested, and Evelyn kills Jeanine in her cell. For the film on its own, see the insurgent movie page.
Allegiant (2016): What Is Outside the Wall?Spoilers
Allegiant (2016), again directed by Robert Schwentke, is the final film and the only one that leaves Chicago's walls behind. It opened in the US on 18 March 2016. With the faction system gone, Evelyn seals the wall and tries Jeanine's supporters, and Johanna leads a growing revolt against her. Tris Prior and Four free Caleb and climb over the wall with Tori, Christina and Peter, and Tori dies when Edgar's guards give chase.
Beyond the wall, armed rescuers take the group to a hidden base: the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, led by David. His account is that earlier genetic tampering caused the Purity Wars, and that the Bureau has since watched experiments in sealed cities to breed genetically healthy people. Tris is the first result it wanted. He shows her her mother's memories, and she agrees to help him if he gets the council to step in. Meanwhile Four, out on a mission, finds that children are being taken and their memories wiped, and Matthew warns him that David has ordered his death.
The last act turns on an amnesia gas. David promises Peter a reward and persuades Evelyn to release it, but Four talks her out of it. Peter shoots Evelyn in the leg once he sees that David has betrayed him, then opens the vault for Tris and Four. Caleb helps Tris wreck the gas hub, and her broadcast tells the world what the Chicago experiment was. Caleb's explosion destroys David's hovercar, the cloaking shield fails, and the Bureau is exposed. Peter heads for it, and nothing after that is shown. More detail is on the allegiant movie page.
Divergent Ascendant: What Happened to the Fourth Film?
Ascendant, the planned fourth film, was never made, so the screen story ends where Allegiant ends. The path to that outcome is traceable in the trade and news record. In September 2015 the Christian Science Monitor covered the retitling of the last two films as Allegiant and Ascendant, with windows of March 2016 and spring 2017. Then, in February 2016, ScreenCrush passed on a Deadline report that Robert Schwentke would not direct Ascendant. On 20 July 2016, after Allegiant's weak showing, Slashfilm reported a switch to a TV movie.
The later record is short. Entertainment Weekly reported in 2023 that Lionsgate had scrapped its plans for a final film, and quoted Veronica Roth as saying Ascendant will never be made and the franchise feels complete. As of 3 November 2026, no new Divergent film has been officially announced or dated. Roth's alternate universe novel The Sixth Faction was due on 6 October 2026, with The Last Testimony following in February 2027, but no studio deal for a film of either has been found. Any adaptation is therefore speculation. Current status is kept on the divergent ascendant page.
Divergent Timeline Explained: How the Story Fits TogetherSpoilers
The Divergent timeline is easy to follow because the three films run in a single line, each picking up where the last one ends, and the order is Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016). If you want the viewing plan, divergent movies in order lays it out, and the full list sits on the divergent movies hub. In my opinion, the interesting question is not the order but what each film changes about the world.
The first film is about a system that looks stable and is not. Insurgent turns that into a mystery, because the box does not just hold a message, it reframes the whole city as an experiment. Allegiant answers the mystery by showing who ran it, and the Bureau of Genetic Welfare turns Tris's Divergent ability from a danger into a measured result. It could be argued that this is the weakest handoff in the saga, since the film introduces a new setting, a new villain in David and a memory wipe plot all at once, then ends with the Bureau's fate unresolved.
That last point matters for anyone asking why the story stops where it does. The three films earned $289 million (Divergent), $297 million (Insurgent) and $179 million (Allegiant) worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, and Allegiant cost $110 million to make, the same budget as Insurgent. Perhaps the drop explains why Ascendant never reached theaters. See divergent box office for the full figures, divergent characters for who plays whom, and divergent movies ranked for where I place each film. If you are starting from scratch, watch the three films in release order, and read the factions guide at divergent factions first if the five virtues feel confusing.
