Divergent Cast: Actors, Characters and Directors

Shailene Woodley plays Tris and Theo James plays Four, and they are the top two billed actors in every film of the series. Who plays Tris? Shailene Woodley, and the part is the spine of the saga. Tris Prior begins as a sixteen year old raised in Abnegation who chooses Dauntless, and Woodley carries that arc through every film. Who plays Four? Theo James, as Four, billed second in each film.

The antagonists carry a good share of the ensemble. Who plays Eric? Jai Courtney, billed fourth in Divergent (2014) as the Dauntless leader Eric Coulter, and seventh in Insurgent. Who plays Peter? Miles Teller, billed seventh in the first film and third in both sequels, as Peter Hayes. Ansel Elgort plays Caleb Prior, Tris's brother, and Zoë Kravitz plays Christina, billed sixth in Divergent (2014) and Insurgent and fourth in Allegiant.

Was Kate Winslet in Divergent? Yes. She plays the Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews, billed twelfth in Divergent (2014) and fourth in Insurgent, where the role is far larger. HuffPost UK reported that Winslet was five months pregnant during filming of the first film. She is not among the first fifteen billed in Allegiant. Ashley Judd (Natalie) and Tony Goldwyn (Andrew) appear in the first film only, and Ray Stevenson plays Marcus there and in Insurgent.

The sequels brought in their own faces. Naomi Watts joined in Insurgent as Evelyn Johnson-Eaton, with Octavia Spencer as Johanna Reyes, Janet McTeer as Edith Prior and Daniel Dae Kim as Jack Kang. Allegiant added Jeff Daniels as David, Bill Skarsgård as Matthew, Keiynan Lonsdale as Uriah Pedrad, Jonny Weston as Edgar, Nadia Hilker as Nita and Andy Bean as Romit. Two directors made the three Divergent films: Neil Burger directed Divergent (2014), and Robert Schwentke directed Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016). Burger's film, released in the US on March 21, 2014, had an $85 million budget and grossed about $289 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. You can read more on divergent 2014.

Schwentke took over for the insurgent movie, which began shooting in Atlanta, as Screen Daily reported, and which had a $110 million budget. He then directed the allegiant movie on the same $110 million budget, and that film held its New York premiere at AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 on March 14, 2016, which TheWrap covered. The three films grossed roughly $289 million, $297 million and $179 million worldwide, so the final installment earned the least of the three. The full figures are on divergent box office.

The composers changed along the way as well. Tom Holkenborg scored Divergent (2014), and Joseph Trapanese scored both sequels. Film Music Reporter reported in November 2014 that Trapanese was hired for Insurgent, replacing Junkie XL. The songs and albums are listed on divergent soundtrack.

The fourth film, Ascendant, lost its director before it started. ScreenCrush relayed Deadline's report of February 9, 2016, that Schwentke had left the project. After Allegiant's weaker performance, Slashfilm reported on July 20, 2016, that Ascendant would be redeveloped as a TV movie. It was never made. Very little was recast across the three films: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and Maggie Q all appear among the first fifteen billed in each one. In my opinion, that continuity is the most striking thing about the Divergent casting. The ensemble thinned from the outside in. Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn appear only in the first film, while Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson and Mekhi Phifer appear in the first two. I cannot say from the credits why any individual actor was absent from Allegiant, so I will not guess.

The change of director is the one real break in continuity. Burger made the first film and Schwentke made both sequels, yet the same leads carry through. It could be argued that this explains why Insurgent and Allegiant feel more like one piece of work than the opening film does, although that is an observation about tone and not a documented fact.

Why did Shailene Woodley quit Divergent? She did not. She played Tris in all three released films, and the series stopped because Ascendant was never made. Why did they stop filming Divergent? Allegiant grossed about $179 million worldwide on a $110 million budget, Schwentke left Ascendant in February 2016, and the film was moved to a TV movie in July 2016 and then to a Starz series, neither of which was produced. Veronica Roth said in October 2023 that Ascendant will never be made.

Is anything new coming? There is no cast or crew for a new film. Veronica Roth's new alternate universe novel, The Sixth Faction, was due on October 6, 2026, with a sequel, The Last Testimony, due in February 2027.
