Divergent Ascendant: Is There a Fourth Divergent Movie?
There is no Divergent 4: Divergent Ascendant, the planned fourth film, has no release date because it was never made, and as of 3 November 2026 no new Divergent movie has been announced or dated. The series ended on three films: Divergent (2014), Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016).
Is There a Fourth Divergent Movie Coming Out?
No fourth Divergent movie is coming out, and no new one has been officially announced. Divergent Ascendant, the film meant to close the saga, was planned as a theatrical release, was redeveloped as a TV movie and then as a Starz series, and was never made. The series therefore stands at three films, which you can follow in the Divergent movies in order guide.
The quickest way to understand the gap is to follow the calendar. In September 2015 the final two films were given the titles Allegiant and Ascendant, with Allegiant due in March 2016 and Ascendant in a spring 2017 window, according to The Christian Science Monitor. Allegiant arrived in US theaters on 18 March 2016, and the planned sequel never followed it.
People search for this film under several names, among them Divergent 4 and the next Divergent movie, and the answer to each is the same. The films that exist are listed on the Divergent movies hub, and how many Divergent movies are there gives the count.
Who Is in the Cast of a New Divergent Film?
No cast has been confirmed for any new Divergent film, and none is reported either, because no new film has been announced. Any casting claim for Ascendant would be a guess.
What can be stated is who led the three films that exist. Shailene Woodley played Tris in all three, and Theo James played Four, billed second each time. Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz and Ansel Elgort also appeared across the three films, as Peter, Christina and Caleb. Kate Winslet played Jeanine in Divergent (2014) and Insurgent, and Naomi Watts joined for Insurgent and Allegiant as Evelyn. Jeff Daniels arrived in Allegiant as David.
None of these actors has been announced for a fourth film. For the full credits, see the Divergent cast page, and for the people they played, the Divergent characters page, including Tris Prior and Four.
Will There Be a New Divergent? Rumors and Talk
Will there be a new Divergent? The only talk comes from Veronica Roth, the author of the original books, and it amounts to a possibility rather than a project. Cinefilos reported in April 2026 that her new alternate universe novel, The Sixth Faction, was due on 6 October 2026, with a follow-up, The Last Testimony, due in February 2027.
No studio, producer or deal has been named for a film of Roth's new book, so this stays at the rumor stage, and the status is unconfirmed. The Cinefilos article itself mentions no new film.
The older record points the other way. Entertainment Weekly reported in October 2023 that Lionsgate had scrapped its plans for a final film, and that Roth said Ascendant will never be made and that the franchise feels complete. Perhaps a successful new book will reopen the conversation, but a publishing date is not a greenlight.
What We Know About Why Ascendant Was Never Made
Ascendant was never made, and the reported sequence runs from its director's exit in February 2016, through Allegiant's weaker box office in March, to a move to a TV movie in July. In my opinion, that run of events explains the cancellation more cleanly than any single headline does.
The numbers are plain. Divergent (2014) made $289 million worldwide on an $85 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. Insurgent made $297 million worldwide on a $110 million budget. Allegiant, on the same $110 million budget, made $179 million worldwide, a drop of about $118 million from Insurgent. You can compare all three on the Divergent box office page.
Schwentke's exit was reported on 9 February 2016, a month before Allegiant opened, so it did not follow the film's performance. SlashFilm later tied the July 2016 shift to a TV movie to Allegiant's weak performance. It could be argued that a TV movie was a way to wrap up the story for the existing cast without a theatrical budget. That plan, and the Starz series after it, did not reach production.
So, will Ascendant ever be released? On the evidence, it is unlikely in its old form. If a new film comes, it is more likely to come from Roth's new books, and I would treat it as a different project.
