Stilgar: Who He Is, Who Plays Him and What Happens to Him

Stilgar is a leader of the Fremen, the native people of Arrakis, the desert planet that is the only source of the spice melange. He is credited simply as "Stilgar" in all three Dune films, so there is no alternate name to untangle, which is a relief in a series where the same book has been filmed twice.

Two actors, two adaptations: that is the whole casting story. Everett McGill plays Stilgar in Dune (1984), directed by David Lynch, where he is billed eleventh in a large ensemble. Javier Bardem plays the part in Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), both directed by Denis Villeneuve. Bardem is billed eighth in the first of those and fourth in the second, which shows how much more room the sequel gives the Fremen. The 1984 film is a separate adaptation of the same book, so McGill's Stilgar belongs to a different story from Bardem's, and the two should not be merged.

In the Villeneuve films the Fremen are the people Duke Leto Atreides hopes to win as allies when House Atreides takes over Arrakis from the Harkonnens. Stilgar's clearest relationship in the films is with the Atreides pair his Fremen take in. Paul Atreides is the center of it. In Dune (2021) the Fremen led by Stilgar accept Paul and Jessica after the Jamis duel, and in Dune: Part Two the Fremen rally behind Paul once he declares himself the Lisan al Gaib. Lady Jessica is the second tie. She survives the Water of Life in Part Two and takes on a dangerous religious role among the Fremen. Chani is the third. She is the Fremen woman from Paul's visions, and she is also the doubter, since she regards the prophecy many Fremen believe as a Bene Gesserit invention. There is one pairing readers often assume. Jessica does not marry Stilgar in any of the films. The marriage in Part Two is political: Irulan agrees to marry Paul so that her father is spared. Stilgar is also not described as Chani's father in the plot of any of the three films; he is the leader of the Fremen who take Paul and Jessica in, and Chani is a Fremen woman Paul grows close to.

The best Stilgar moments are the ones where the Fremen decide about Paul, and in my opinion the close of Dune (2021) is the cleanest of them.

First, the end of Dune (2021). The film finishes just after Paul kills Jamis, with Stilgar's Fremen taking the Atreides survivors in. It is a short scene, but it hands the story to the desert people, and it is a smart use of Bardem, who is billed eighth in that film.

Second, the shelter at Sietch Tabr in Dune: Part Two. Paul has to win a place by defeating Jamis, and what I find interesting is how the film lets the tribe stay devoted and doubtful at once, with Chani questioning the prophecy beside them. It could be argued that this is where the ensemble does its best work.

Third, the rally after Paul declares himself the Lisan al Gaib. It is the point where belief becomes force, and the later attack with atomic weapons and sandworms is where that force turns on the Harkonnens and the Emperor's troops. Compared with the 1984 film, where the Fremen are folded into Paul's rise in a few strokes, Villeneuve gives them room to matter.
