Halloween 4 Plot: The Setup

Halloween 4 opens ten years after the first film, with Michael Myers in a coma and being moved between hospitals. During one of those transfers he overhears that he has a young niece living in Haddonfield. He wakes, kills the ambulance crew and heads for home.

That niece is Jamie Lloyd, the orphaned daughter of Laurie Strode (the heroine of Halloween 1978). She lives with a foster family, has nightmares about her uncle, and is teased at school for the family name she carries. Her foster sister Rachel is left to look after her on Halloween night, which gives the film its simple engine: a young girl, her foster sister and a killer all heading for the same town.

Dr. Loomis, Michael's psychiatrist, learns of the escape and races toward Haddonfield. If you are working through the series in order, this is where the original timeline picks up again after Halloween 3 Season of the Witch, which has no Michael Myers at all. The Halloween movies in order guide shows exactly where each film sits.

Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers Soundtrack and Score

Alan Howarth composed the score for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), and the score album, also titled "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers", was released on Varèse Sarabande in 1988 with 11 tracks. That makes the film's music a one composer, one album affair, and the album is the place to start if you want to hear it on its own.

Howarth is the only composer credited, so every cue in the film comes from a single hand. In a slasher, the score does much of the work that a creature's roar does in a monster movie: it tells you where the threat is before the camera does, and it decides how long a quiet moment is allowed to last. As a score release, the album gathers those cues into a listening order of eleven tracks, which is a compact length for a horror record.

No songs are credited for the film's music, so there are no licensed or original tracks to list, and the score carries the whole job. If you are comparing the series entry by entry, the score album is the one soundtrack release tied to this film.

Halloween 4 Plot Explained: Full Summary With SpoilersSpoilers

Halloween 4 follows one long night, from Michael Myers waking in an ambulance to a mob shooting him into a mine shaft. On Halloween eve in 1988, Michael is being transferred to a new sanitarium when he hears that he has a living niece. He wakes from his coma, kills the ambulance crew and makes for Haddonfield.

Jamie Lloyd, who lives with the Carruthers family, is haunted by dreams of him, and her foster sister Rachel cancels a date to mind her on Halloween night. Dr. Loomis learns Michael has escaped and heads for Haddonfield. He fights Michael at a gas station, but Michael gets away in a tow truck and Loomis has to continue on foot.

Jamie goes trick or treating in a clown costume, and Michael later breaks into her home and learns who she is. He then cuts the town's power and kills most of the local police, and an angry mob of townspeople forms. Sheriff Meeker and Loomis take the girls to the sheriff's house, but Michael follows and kills several people there, so the girls flee across the rooftops.

Michael chases Jamie and Loomis to the school, and Rachel helps drive him off. He then hides under the truck carrying the girls out of town and kills several members of the mob. Rachel throws him off the truck and runs him down, and he is shot repeatedly before he falls into an abandoned mine.

Back at the Carruthers house, Jamie is found in her clown costume holding bloody scissors, and Loomis realizes that Michael's evil has passed to her. The next section, Halloween 4 ending explained, covers what that final image means and how the following film uses it.

Premiere, Release Dates and Where to Watch Halloween 4

Halloween 4 had its world premiere screening on 17 October 1988 as a benefit for the Actors Fund, four days before its US theatrical release on 21 October 1988. The AFI catalog gives the date but names no city or venue.

The film opened in 1,677 theaters in the US and Canada according to AFI, while Box Office Mojo lists 1,679. Its opening weekend was $6.8 million against the $5 million budget, so the first three days alone out-earned the cost of making it. Outside the US, TMDB lists Australia on 9 February 1989 and the UK on 3 November 1989, both as reported dates.

Halloween 4 is rated R in the US, 18 in the UK and M in Australia.

As of 3 November 2026, streaming data from JustWatch via TMDB shows several options. In the US the film is on Philo, AMC, AMC+ (including its Amazon, Apple TV and Roku channels) and Shudder (including its Amazon and Apple TV channels), and it can be rented or bought on Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, Google Play Movies, YouTube and Fandango At Home. In the UK it streams on Shudder and the Shudder Amazon Channel, and it can be rented or bought on Apple TV Store, Amazon Video and Sky Store. In Australia it streams on Shudder via its Amazon and Apple TV channels and on AMC+ via its Amazon and Apple TV channels. Availability changes often, so the where to watch Halloween page carries the current table for every film.

Halloween 4 Ending Explained: Why Jamie Holds the ScissorsSpoilers

The ending of Halloween 4 shows Jamie Lloyd, dressed in her clown costume and holding bloody scissors, standing silent and expressionless after Darlene Carruthers is attacked. Loomis raises his gun to shoot her, Sheriff Meeker disarms him, and Loomis sobs because he understands that Michael's evil has passed to the child.

Before that, Michael is shot by the mob and the state police and drops into an old mine shaft, apparently dead. I would stress the word apparently, because the series has taught everyone watching that a drop down a shaft is not a funeral.

What does the final image mean? In my opinion, it is the most interesting rule the film adds to the monster: whatever makes him dangerous can move into another person, and it picks the one person who shares his blood and his Halloween night. The scissors are the visual proof. It could be argued that the clown costume, played for a child's trick or treat earlier in the night, becomes the creepiest piece of design in the film once it is stained and Jamie's face is blank.

The film also gives Loomis his most human moment. He has spent the series chasing Michael with a gun, and here he lifts it toward a child, which is a different kind of horror from the knife work. Meeker stopping him keeps the scene from ending somewhere far worse.

The next film picks the thread up directly. In Halloween 5, Michael survives the mine shaft, drifts down a river to a hermit's shack and recovers over a year, and Jamie has been left mute by her trauma while sharing a mental link with him. The Halloween timelines explained guide sets out which versions of the story each film belongs to.

Where Was Halloween 4 Filmed?

Yes, in story terms Halloween 4 belongs to the original timeline that runs from Halloween (1978) through Halloween II (1981).
