Halloween Timelines Explained: Every Continuity and Which Films Belong

Halloween timelines explained: the 13 Halloween films (10 main films plus 3 spin-offs) split into five separate continuities. They are the original saga, the standalone Halloween III: Season of the Witch, the H20 and Resurrection line, Rob Zombie's two remakes, and the 2018 trilogy. Four of them build on or rework the 1978 film, and Season of the Witch stands apart, so you only ever need to follow one timeline at a time.

How Many Halloween Timelines Are There?

There are five Halloween timelines across the 13 films released so far (10 main saga films plus 3 spin-offs), and most of them treat the 1978 original as their starting point while disagreeing about almost everything after it. The first is the original saga, which runs from Halloween (1978), directed by John Carpenter, through Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. The second is Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), a standalone with no Michael Myers. The third is the H20 line, made up of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later and Halloween: Resurrection, which skip films 4 to 6. The fourth is Rob Zombie's remake pair, Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). The fifth is the 2018 trilogy of Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, a direct sequel to the 1978 film.

If you only want the order the films arrived in, our halloween movies in order guide lists every one, and the halloween timeline page follows the story events. Think of it like a television show that has been rebooted a few times: the same title sits on the box, but each season belongs on a different shelf.

Why Are There Different Halloween Timelines?

Halloween has several timelines because each new film was written as a sequel to a different point in the story, and the studios kept choosing to reset rather than continue. The pattern started early. Halloween III: Season of the Witch was meant to begin an anthology of unconnected Halloween stories, but that plan was dropped and Michael Myers returned in the next sequel.

Later resets were more deliberate. Halloween H20 was made around Jamie Lee Curtis, who agreed to return on the condition that the film not hint at a sequel, so it was presented as the end of Laurie Strode's story. Rob Zombie then rebuilt the whole saga from Michael's childhood in Halloween (2007). In 2018, Universal released a new Halloween (2018) that Comcast described as a sequel to the 1978 film which departs from its sequels, with Carpenter as executive producer and creative consultant (Comcast).

So, the answer is less about one big mistake and more about a monster that producers kept finding new ways to bring back. A creature that keeps getting up after being shot, burned or dropped from a balcony is, paradoxically, very hard to end for good.

The Original Halloween Timeline: 1978, 1981 and Films 4 to 6Spoilers

The original timeline is the longest, with five films that run in a straight line from halloween 1978 to halloween the curse of michael myers. In Halloween (1978) six-year-old Michael Myers stabs his older sister on Halloween night in 1963 and is locked away. Fifteen years later he escapes, returns to Haddonfield and stalks the high schooler Laurie Strode, and the film (91 minutes) ends with Dr. Loomis shooting him off a balcony and finding the body gone.

Halloween ii 1981, directed by Rick Rosenthal, picks up the same night at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital. It reveals that Laurie is Michael's younger sister, and it ends when Laurie shoots Michael in both eyes and Loomis ignites leaking gas, leaving both men in the explosion.

Films 4 to 6 follow. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, directed by Dwight H. Little in 1988, shows Michael waking from a coma to hunt his niece Jamie Lloyd, the orphaned daughter of Laurie Strode. He falls down a mine shaft, and Jamie is left holding bloody scissors as Loomis realizes the evil has passed to her. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard in 1989, has Michael survive, return for Jamie and be jailed, only for a Man in Black to kill the police and empty the cell. Joe Chappelle's Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) then brings in a cult tied to an ancient curse called Thorn, led by Dr. Terence Wynn. Jamie dies after giving birth to a son named Steven, and Tommy Doyle, now a reclusive adult, helps save the child. A separate workprint known as the Producer's Cut gives the film a different ending, with Loomis taking on the cult's curse.

This is the timeline where the lore gets thickest, because every film answers the last one with a bigger question.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch: The Standalone TimelineSpoilers

Halloween 3 season of the witch sits in its own timeline because it has no Michael Myers, no Haddonfield and no connection to the other films beyond the holiday. Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace in 1982, it runs 98 minutes and follows Dr. Daniel Challis, a hard drinking surgeon, after a frightened shop owner named Harry Grimbridge is killed in his hospital while clutching a Silver Shamrock mask.

Challis teams up with Harry's daughter Ellie and travels to the company town of Santa Mira. There a catchy television commercial counts down to a Halloween giveaway, and factory owner Conal Cochran reveals that the masks contain chips holding a piece of Stonehenge. When the commercial airs on Halloween night, the masks will kill the children wearing them, which Cochran frames as a return to ancient Samhain sacrifice. Ellie turns out to be an android, and Challis destroys her after a car crash.

The ending is one of the bleakest in the series. Challis phones the networks and begs them to pull the ad. Two comply, but the film cuts out as the third is still showing it, so the fate of the children is never resolved. Because the anthology plan was dropped, no later film picks the story up, and you can watch it at any point without losing anything.

The H20 and Resurrection TimelineSpoilers

The H20 timeline contains two films, halloween h20 and halloween resurrection, and it follows Laurie Strode twenty years after the Haddonfield murders while ignoring films 4 to 6. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998), directed by Steve Miner, runs 86 minutes. Laurie has faked her death and lives in California as Keri Tate, headmistress of Hillcrest Academy, where she drinks too much, has nightmares and worries about her teenage son John.

Michael tracks her down after killing Marion Chambers, a former colleague of Dr. Loomis, and stealing files on Laurie. He kills several students and staff on the empty campus, and Laurie decides to stop running. She confronts him with an axe, and after he escapes a coroner's van she ends it with the axe as sirens close in.

Halloween: Resurrection (2002), directed by Rick Rosenthal (who also made Halloween II in 1981), undoes that closure. Laurie is held in a psychiatric facility, convinced that the man she killed was not Michael, and Michael finds her there and kills her. A year later, producers Freddie Harris and Nora Winston send six students into the Myers house with cameras for an internet show. Michael is truly inside, and Freddie and the survivor Sara set him on fire in an electrical blaze. His body stirs in the morgue, which suggests he is still alive, while an alternate ending on the home release has Sara kill him with an axe.

Rob Zombie's Halloween Timeline: 2007 and 2009Spoilers

Rob Zombie's timeline is a self contained remake pair, halloween 2007 rob zombie and halloween 2 2009, and neither film connects to any other entry. Halloween (2007) runs 110 minutes and spends its first act on ten year old Michael Myers in a troubled home, where he is bullied at school, mistreated by his mother's boyfriend and keeps to himself making masks. After the murders of that night, he is sent to Smith's Grove Sanitarium under Dr. Loomis, fifteen years pass, and he escapes during a transfer and walks home to Haddonfield.

The 2007 film ends with Michael dragging Laurie back into his old house after killing Loomis. They tumble over a railing, a gun fires and police sirens close in. A different ending was shot in which Loomis talks Michael into letting Laurie go before police shoot him, but the finished film leaves her fate open.

So, how does Halloween 2009 end? Halloween II (2009), 105 minutes, finds Laurie living with Sheriff Brackett and his daughter Annie while Loomis profits from a book about the events. Michael takes Laurie to an abandoned shack and kills Loomis there, Brackett shoots Michael through a window, and Laurie finishes him with his own knife. She walks outside in his torn mask. The last scene shows her in a psychiatric ward, smiling as the ghost of her mother approaches with the white horse. Zombie also filmed an alternate ending in which police fire on Laurie, and neither version sets up a clear continuation.

The 2018 Halloween Trilogy: Halloween, Kills and EndsSpoilers

The 2018 trilogy is a direct sequel to the 1978 film, with all three chapters directed by David Gordon Green, and Halloween Ends closed it. Halloween 2018 runs 106 minutes and opens with two podcasters confronting Michael at Smith's Grove, forty years after the first night. Laurie Strode has spent four decades preparing for his return and is estranged from her daughter Karen, while her granddaughter Allyson stays close. A transfer bus crashes, Michael escapes, and the three Strode women lock him in a safe room under Laurie's house and set it alight.

Halloween Kills begins that same night. Michael escapes the fire and kills the firefighters sent to put it out, and Tommy Doyle rallies survivors of the 1978 rampage into an angry crowd. The mob chases an escaped patient named Lance Tivoli to his death after mistaking him for Michael. It then corners the real Michael at his old home, where he kills most of them, and Karen is killed in the house.

Halloween Ends opens on Halloween night 2019 with the accident that turns Corey Cunningham, a young man blamed for the death of the boy he was babysitting, into an outcast, and then moves to a Haddonfield three years later that has turned on him. Corey takes up Michael's mask and starts killing people who wronged him, and Michael kills him to reclaim it. Laurie and Allyson then overpower Michael, who bleeds out, and his body is destroyed in an industrial shredder at a salvage yard. Nothing further is set up, since the film ends this trilogy. Kills released day and date with Peacock on October 15, 2021, and Ends did the same on October 14, 2022 (TheWrap).

Who Broke Michael Myers Out of Jail?Spoilers

Who broke Michael Myers out of jail depends on the timeline, and the only film in which someone else frees him is Halloween 5. In that film Michael is captured at the old Myers house, tranquilized by Loomis and locked in a cell. A mysterious Man in Black then attacks the police station, kills Sheriff Meeker and his officers, and leaves the cell empty. The film never explains who he is, and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers follows by showing a cult led by Dr. Terence Wynn holding Michael and Jamie Lloyd.

Every other escape is Michael's own doing. In 1978 he steals a car while Loomis is moving him. In Halloween (2007) he escapes during a transfer and kills the staff around him. In Halloween (2018) a transfer bus crashes and he walks away. If you came for the Man in Black, you want the original saga, and the halloween characters movie page lists the people around him.

Is a New Halloween Movie Coming?

No dated Halloween film has been announced, so a sixth timeline has not been confirmed. The latest film, Halloween Ends (2022), closed the 2018 trilogy. TheWrap reported in October 2023 that Miramax won the franchise TV rights and plans a Halloween television series with Trancas, and it framed that series as a possible base for a wider film and television universe, though it gave no film title or date (TheWrap). A 2028 target tied to the franchise's 50th anniversary has been reported, but no studio or trade paper confirms it and Miramax has made no official announcement, so it stays a rumor.

Which Halloween Timeline Is the Best? My TakeSpoilers

In my opinion, the 2018 trilogy is the best timeline to commit to, because it is the one that tells a finished story across three films. The original saga has the richest mythology, but it asks you to sit through a Man in Black and a Druid style curse that never settle. The H20 line is tight, and the 86 minute film is a clean farewell for Laurie until Resurrection reopens it. Zombie's pair is the most distinctive version of Michael, but it reads as a separate reading of the character rather than a continuation.

Perhaps the strongest argument for the trilogy is how it treats the monster. Michael keeps getting up in 1978, shot, stabbed and dropped from a balcony, and that rule drives the fear. In Halloween Ends he finally bleeds out, which is a rule change the series earned over three films. It could be argued that Halloween Kills overplays the mob, and that Corey is a risky detour, so the trilogy is not flawless.

If you are new, start with halloween 1978, then pick one timeline and stay in it. Take the 2018 trilogy for a finished story, the original saga for lore, and Season of the Witch whenever you want a Halloween film with no Michael at all.
