Dr. Loomis in the Halloween Movies: Actor, Michael Myers and Fate
Dr Loomis, full name Samuel Loomis, is the psychiatrist who treats Michael Myers in the Halloween films. Donald Pleasence plays him in five films, from Halloween (1978) to Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), and Malcolm McDowell plays him in Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009). He survives in some versions of the story and dies in others, so his fate depends on the timeline.

Who Is Dr Loomis in the Halloween Movies?
Dr. Samuel Loomis is the psychiatrist who treats Michael Myers, and he spends most of the series warning anyone who will listen that Michael is not a patient to be trusted. In a saga where the monster never speaks, Loomis is the character who explains what Michael is, which makes him the series' designated worrier: the one person who understands the creature and gets doubted anyway. The credits shorten his name in several ways: Loomis in Halloween (1978), Dr Samuel Loomis in Halloween II (1981), Dr. Loomis in Halloween 4 and The Curse of Michael Myers, Dr. Sam Loomis in Halloween 5, and Dr. Samuel Loomis in both Rob Zombie films.
Donald Pleasence plays him in the original series: Halloween 1978, directed by John Carpenter, Halloween II 1981, Halloween 4, Halloween 5 and Halloween The Curse of Michael Myers. Malcolm McDowell plays a more worn out version in Halloween 2007 Rob Zombie and Halloween 2 2009. That makes seven appearances in total, and Pleasence is billed first in the 1978 film.
The timelines matter here. Loomis is not in the cast of Halloween H20, which only nods to him through Marion Chambers, his former colleague, played again by Nancy Stephens. Halloween (2018) is a sequel to the 1978 film that departs from its sequels, and it gives Michael a different psychiatrist, Dr. Sartain. Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a standalone with no Michael Myers, and Loomis is not in its cast. For the full map, see Halloween timelines explained and the Halloween timeline.

Dr Loomis Story Arc: From Hunter to Cautionary TaleSpoilers
Loomis moves through two separate continuities, the original series and Rob Zombie's remakes, and his role changes in each one. In Halloween (1978), fifteen years after Michael kills his sister, Loomis goes to move his patient, but Michael steals a car and escapes. Loomis follows him to Haddonfield, warns Sheriff Brackett and searches the town while Michael trails Laurie Strode. At the end he shoots Michael, who falls from a balcony, and when Loomis looks down the body is gone.
Halloween II (1981), directed by Rick Rosenthal, picks up moments later. Loomis searches the streets, then learns from Marion that Laurie is Michael's younger sister, adopted after the family's deaths, which explains why Michael keeps coming for her. A marshal drives him to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, where Michael kills the marshal. Loomis and Laurie get Michael into an operating room, Laurie blinds him with a gun, and Loomis tells her to run before he ignites leaking gas.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), directed by Dwight H. Little, finds him alive ten years later. He fights Michael at a gas station, loses him to a tow truck, and then protects Jamie Lloyd alongside Sheriff Meeker. In Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989), directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard, he uses Jamie's mental link to Michael and sets a trap at the old Myers house with Jamie as bait. In Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995), directed by Joe Chappelle, he is drawn back into the case and heads to Smith's Grove Sanitarium.
Rob Zombie's version starts earlier. In Halloween (2007), Loomis treats the child Michael at Smith's Grove while Michael withdraws, makes masks and stops speaking. Loomis eventually gives up on him and writes a book about the case. By Halloween II (2009), that book has made him a celebrity, which puts him at odds with the people he once tried to protect.
Dr Loomis and Michael Myers: His Key Relationships
Loomis is tied above all to Michael Myers, whom he treats as a doctor, hunts as a pursuer and, in the Zombie films, tries to reach as a man. See the michael myers character page for the other side of that relationship. In the original series Loomis insists Michael is not an ordinary patient. In Rob Zombie's version he knew Michael as a ten year old, so the bond is closer and the failure feels more personal.
Laurie Strode is the second major link. In Halloween II (1981), Marion tells Loomis that Laurie is Michael's younger sister, and Loomis then shields her in the hospital finale. In the Zombie films, Laurie Strode is the baby sister Michael spared, and Loomis arrives at the Myers house near the end of the 2007 film.
In the sequels, his closest bond shifts to Jamie Lloyd Halloween, Laurie's daughter, whom he guards in films 4 and 5. Sheriff Brackett is the lawman he warns in 1978, and Sheriff Meeker stands beside him in films 4 and 5, where Loomis has to convince police that the danger is real. Marion Chambers is his colleague. In The Curse of Michael Myers he heads to Smith's Grove Sanitarium, where Tommy Doyle Halloween and Kara Strode rescue the children, and Dr. Terence Wynn leads the cult that wants Michael and the child.
What Happened to Dr Loomis? Every Fate by TimelineSpoilers
Dr Loomis dies in some timelines, survives in others, and has an unresolved fate in the film that ends his original run. In Halloween (1978), he survives the night after shooting Michael several times, and Michael falls from a balcony and the body is gone.
In Halloween II (1981), Loomis sets off a gas explosion that kills himself and apparently Michael. Halloween 4 nonetheless has him alive, and he ends that film sobbing as he realizes Michael's evil has passed to Jamie. In Halloween 5, he tranquilizes Michael, beats him unconscious and then collapses from a stroke. Police jail Michael, but a man in black attacks the station and frees him, and the film leaves that man unexplained.
In Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, Loomis stays inside Smith's Grove while Tommy and Kara rescue the children, and in the theatrical cut his fate is left open. The separate workprint known as the Producer's Cut has a different ending in which Loomis takes on the cult's curse. This was Donald Pleasence's last film.
In Rob Zombie's Halloween (2007), Loomis shoots Michael, but Michael gets up, kills Loomis and grabs Laurie again. In Halloween II (2009), Loomis goes into an abandoned shack to reason with Michael, and Michael stabs him to death.
Best Dr Loomis Moments, Ranked by a Creature Fan
In my opinion, the best Loomis moment is the vanished body at the end of Halloween (1978). He shoots Michael, looks over the balcony and finds nothing, and that single shot teaches the audience the rule the series runs on: Michael does not stay down. Carpenter cuts to the empty houses afterward, and the fear lands because Loomis is the one person who is not surprised.
Second, perhaps, is the finale of Halloween II (1981), where Loomis tells Laurie to run and then lights the gas. It is the rare slasher beat where the expert pays for his own warnings, and it could be argued that the film peaks right there.
Third is the closing scene of Halloween 4, when Loomis raises his gun toward Jamie and then sobs once Meeker disarms him. The film asks whether Michael's evil can be passed to a child, and Loomis is the only adult who understands what that would mean. On the lighter side, I enjoy Halloween 5 for giving the doctor a tranquilizer and a very physical beating of Michael, followed by a stroke, which is a dark joke about how far obsession can take a man.
As for the Zombie films, Malcolm McDowell's Loomis is more tragic than heroic, and the shack scene in Halloween II (2009) shows a man who still thinks he can talk to Michael. If you want to see all of this in sequence, the halloween movies in order guide lays out which films belong to which timeline.
