Who Is Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs?
Buffalo Bill is the nickname of Jame Gumb, the serial killer at the center of The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme. The credits list him as Jame Gumb, billed fourth, and Ted Levine plays him.
The setup is grim and simple. Buffalo Bill kills women and skins his victims, and senior FBI agent Jack Crawford wants a profile of him. That is why Crawford pulls trainee Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) out of her studies and sends her to question Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist jailed for murder and cannibalism. Lecter may be the more famous monster, but Gumb is the one the plot is chasing.

The saga has another serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde, but he is a separate character. He is the quarry in Manhunter 1986 and Red Dragon 2002.

Buffalo Bill's Story Arc: From Catherine Martin to the BasementSpoilers
Gumb spends most of the film as a shadow, and the arc is really about how long it takes anyone to put a name to him. Early on he is only Buffalo Bill, a label for a killer of women whom Jack Crawford wants profiled, and that need is what sends Clarice Starling to Hannibal Lecter's cell.
The case turns urgent once Catherine Martin (Brooke Smith) is taken. Her mother, Senator Ruth Martin (Diane Baker), brings political weight to the search, and the clock on Catherine's survival starts running. Lecter feeds Clarice partial guidance while he bargains for favors, then leaves custody in violent fashion before he ever names anyone outright.
The name arrives by Clarice's own legwork. She calls on a man at a house as part of routine questioning, then spots a moth tied to the killings and understands that the man in front of her is Jame Gumb. Catherine is below the floor in his basement, in a pit.
The last stretch is a hunt in the dark. Gumb switches off the lights and watches Clarice through night vision goggles, which gives him sight while she has none. A noise gives away where he is standing, and her shot ends his story.
Who Is Buffalo Bill Connected To?
Buffalo Bill is tied to four people in the film, and each tie runs through the hunt: Clarice chases him, Lecter trades clues about him, Crawford directs the case, and Catherine Martin is the person he holds.
Clarice Starling is the closest thing he has to an opposite number. She is a trainee sent into the case by Crawford, and she is the one who reaches his house and his basement. Hannibal Lecter shapes the story around him by offering clues in exchange for personal details from Clarice. That help is conditional, and the film keeps Gumb's identity just out of reach until Clarice finds it herself.
Catherine Martin is his captive, held in a pit in the basement, and her status as a senator's daughter raises the stakes of the case. Jack Crawford is the agent leading the hunt and the one who sends Clarice to Lecter in the first place.
What Happens to Buffalo Bill at the End?Spoilers
Buffalo Bill dies in his own basement, shot by Clarice Starling in the dark. After he cuts the lights and stalks her with night vision goggles, he gives away his position, and she fires and kills him. Catherine Martin is rescued.
Clarice then graduates from the FBI Academy. At the graduation party she gets a phone call from Lecter, who is free and abroad, and he says he is going to have an old friend for dinner as he follows Dr. Chilton. With Gumb gone, Lecter is the threat that remains.
Hannibal (2001) picks up ten years after the Buffalo Bill case, with Clarice recast as Julianne Moore, and that case is the link back to this film.
The Best Buffalo Bill Scenes in the Film
In my opinion, the basement sequence is the best Buffalo Bill scene because it works like a creature feature: the monster has one clear rule, which is that he can see and she cannot. The scare lands because the film hands the advantage to the killer through a piece of equipment, the night vision goggles, and then leaves the audience sitting in Clarice's blindness.
The moth is the other moment I would point a new viewer to. Clarice walks into a house believing she is only questioning a witness, and a single detail tells her, and the audience, that she is standing in Gumb's home. It is a quiet reveal, and it could be argued that it frightens more than the shooting that follows.
The third is the pit. Catherine Martin kept in the basement gives the story its ticking clock, and her father's position as a senator is what raises the pressure on the investigation. On the music side, Goodbye Horses by Q Lazzarus is among the film's notable songs, along with Hip Priest by The Fall. The full list is on the Hannibal soundtrack page.
