Josh Lambert in Insidious: Who He Is and Who Plays Him

Josh Lambert is the father of the Lambert family and the central figure of the insidious movies, played by Patrick Wilson in Insidious (2011), Insidious: Chapter 2 and Insidious: The Red Door (2023). He is the husband of Renai Lambert, the son of Lorraine Lambert and the father of Dalton and Foster.

He first appears in insidious 2011, directed by James Wan, where Wilson is billed first and Rose Byrne plays Renai. Wilson returns in insidious chapter 2 (2013), also directed by Wan, and again in insidious the red door (2023), which he directed himself. The young version of the character is credited as Josh Lambert (young) in Chapter 2 and played by Garrett Ryan.

Josh matters because he carries the family secret. As a boy he could project his spirit out of his body, and he buried the memory after an old woman's spirit began stalking him. Josh's family is the spine of the saga, and each relationship is tested by the Further in a different way.

His wife is Renai Lambert, played by Rose Byrne. She sees a figure in the house in Insidious (2011), and in Chapter 2 she fights off the possessed Josh with Lorraine's help. His mother is Lorraine Lambert, played by Barbara Hershey, with Jocelin Donahue credited as the adult Lorraine in Chapter 2. Yes, Lorraine is Josh's mom. She is the one who sees the red faced demon and calls in Elise. The Last Key ends with Lorraine phoning Elise about her grandson Dalton, which leads straight into the first film.

His father is Ben Burton, who Josh believed had abandoned the family. In The Red Door Josh learns that Ben died by suicide in an institution, and Renai explains that Ben also projected but saw it as mental illness. David Call is credited as Smash Face / Ben Burton.

His sons are Dalton, played by Ty Simpkins, and Foster, played by Andrew Astor. Josh and Dalton share the ability, which is why their story is the emotional core of The Red Door.

His closest ally in the supernatural side is elise rainier, played by Lin Shaye, and the demon that haunts him is covered on the lipstick face demon page.

In my opinion, Josh is at his best when the films make his body the battleground, and three scenes show it.

The first is the photograph at the end of Insidious (2011). It could be argued that the scare works because the film has spent 102 minutes teaching us that the Further is a place, and then shows that the danger can ride home inside someone we trust. Elise's last act is a camera click, which is a very quiet way to end a very loud haunting.

The second is the possessed Josh in Chapter 2, who grows distant and strange while Renai sees apparitions and hears odd sounds. Perhaps the smartest choice is that the Bride in Black turns out to be Parker Crane, which gives the creature a rule and a history instead of just a costume.

The third is the door in The Red Door. Josh holding it shut while Dalton escapes pays off the first film from the other side: the father who once went into the Further to rescue his son now holds the line so his son can live.
