Lipstick Face Demon in Insidious: Actor, Films and Fate
The lipstick face demon, credited as the Lipstick-Face Demon or the Lipstick Demon, is the red faced demon of the Insidious films, played by composer Joseph Bishara and credited in five of the six films: Insidious (2011), Insidious: Chapter 3, Insidious: The Last Key, Insidious: The Red Door (2023) and Insidious: Out of the Further (2026). Josh Lambert and Dalton Lambert meet him in the Further in the first film and The Red Door, and he appears in the final scene of Chapter 3.
Who Plays Lipstick-Face Demon?
Who Is the Lipstick Face Demon in Insidious?
The Lipstick-Face Demon is the red faced demon who haunts the Lambert family, credited under that name in Insidious (2011), directed by James Wan, and in Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), directed by Leigh Whannell. In Insidious: The Red Door (2023), directed by Patrick Wilson, the same role is credited as the Lipstick Demon. The credits also place him in Insidious: The Last Key (2018) and Insidious: Out of the Further (2026), where he is billed further down the cast list, which makes five films in all. If you searched for the lipstick face demon actor, the answer is Joseph Bishara in every one of them.
Bishara is also the credited composer on every Insidious film, so the man playing the demon is the man writing the score that announces him. That is a neat bit of economy, and it could be argued that it explains why the character feels so tied to the sound of the series.
Why is he called the Lipstick-Face Demon? That is the name the credits use, a description rather than a personal name, and the plots of the first film and The Red Door describe him as a red faced demon. His main targets are Josh Lambert and his son Dalton Lambert. His home ground is the Further, the spirit realm where restless dead and darker entities wait for a way back into the living world. He sits among the other Insidious demons as the one credited across five films, from the first movie to the most recent. For the two men he hunts, see josh lambert insidious and dalton insidious.

The Lipstick-Face Demon's Story Arc Across the FilmsSpoilers
The demon is credited in five films, and the order matters because Chapter 3 and The Last Key are prequels set before the first movie. The sequence below follows release order, with the chronology noted where it changes the picture.
Insidious (2011). In insidious 2011, Lorraine is troubled by a vision of a red faced demon before she calls in the psychic Elise Rainier. Elise explains that Dalton Lambert is not in a coma: he can project his spirit out of his body, and he has wandered into the Further, where restless spirits want to use his empty body to return to the living world. Josh Lambert, who had the same ability as a boy, is hypnotized so he can travel into the Further. He passes through the haunted realm, faces the demon and locates Dalton, and the two escape back to their bodies.
Insidious: Chapter 3. Insidious chapter 3 is set in 2007, years before the Lamberts meet Elise. The demon is not the main threat there, which is a breathing spirit that targets Quinn Brenner. He turns up in the final scene instead, when Elise is back at her home, her dog barks at something unseen, and a red faced demon is shown watching her from behind. As an ending it is quiet and unpleasant, and it ties the prequel to the demon of the first film.
Insidious: The Last Key. The credits for insidious the last key list him too, further down the cast list. That film is another prequel, and its plot centers on KeyFace, the demon who killed Elise's mother Audrey, so the Lipstick-Face Demon is a minor presence there.
Insidious: The Red Door. In insidious the red door, set nine years after the second film, Dalton is a college student who has lost his memories of the Further. After he slips into it by accident and then projects on purpose, he sees the red faced demon from his childhood. Later the demon takes over Dalton's body and goes after his roommate Chris. The demon is the final obstacle in a film about Josh and Dalton Lambert trying to repair their bond.
Insidious: Out of the Further. He is credited again in insidious out of the further, also further down the cast list. The plot of that film follows Gemma Hall and the cult leader Cyrus Lam, and its post credit scene belongs to the keyed demon, not to him.
Insidious chapter 2 turns on the spirit of Parker Crane's mother Michelle and the Bride in Black, and he is not credited in it.
Who the Lipstick-Face Demon Hunts and Who Fights Back
The Lipstick-Face Demon's relationships are all adversarial, and they cluster around the Lambert family, with Elise Rainier as the one outsider he watches. He has no allies in the films, only people who stand in his way.
What Happened to the Lipstick-Face Demon?Spoilers
The last demon scene the plots describe is in The Red Door, where he chases Josh Lambert and Dalton Lambert to the red door and Josh holds it shut, but no film states that he is destroyed. After he takes over Dalton's body, Josh frees his son, and the demon chases them both to the red door. Josh stays behind to hold it shut while Dalton escapes, and back in his body Dalton paints over the red door in black, sealing the Further.
What that means for the demon is left open. A post credit scene shows the light above the sealed door to the Further flickering back on. Out of the Further (2026) then credits him again, and the most recent Insidious release has no stated end for him either. As such, the safest reading is that he is never shown to be destroyed. A further sequel has no official confirmation.
That film's post credit scene shows a different demon, one with keys for fingers who locks Cyrus in a cell behind a red door. The keyed demon matches the description of KeyFace from The Last Key, so it should not be confused with the Lipstick-Face Demon.
Best Moments: The Lipstick Face Demon Explained Through His Scares
In my opinion, the demon works best when he is barely used, and his appearances in the plots are a good lesson in restraint. The Further sequences in the first film are the obvious pick, because Josh Lambert passes through the haunted realm, faces the demon and locates Dalton Lambert. A monster met at the destination does more for dread than one that chases you from the first reel.
My favorite moment is the least showy one, the closing scene of Chapter 3. Elise is home, her dog barks at something unseen, and a red faced demon is shown watching her from behind. Nothing more is needed, because the audience knows something she does not. As a prequel button, it does what a good one should, which is to make the first film feel more dangerous in hindsight.
The Red Door gives him the biggest job, and, perhaps, the most interesting one. He takes over Dalton's body, which turns a childhood scare into an adult fight, and the climax at the red door is built on a simple situation: Josh stays behind to hold the door shut while Dalton escapes. As for the question of who the strongest demon in Insidious is, I would hedge. KeyFace kept the souls he had taken in the Further and controlled both Gerald and Ted, which is a strong case for him. The Lipstick-Face Demon has the longer career, credited in five films between 2011 and 2026, and it could be argued that staying power is its own kind of strength.
