Dalton Insidious: Who Is Dalton Lambert and Who Plays Him?
Dalton in Insidious is Dalton Lambert, the son of Josh and Renai Lambert, played by Ty Simpkins in Insidious (2011), Insidious: Chapter 2 and Insidious: The Red Door. He is the boy whose fall in the attic starts the first film's haunting, and he returns as a college student in The Red Door, the film that closes the Lambert family story.
Who Plays Dalton Lambert?
Dalton Lambert: Who Plays Dalton in Insidious?
Dalton Lambert is the son of Josh and Renai Lambert and the child at the center of the Insidious saga, played by Ty Simpkins in Insidious (2011), Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) and Insidious: The Red Door (2023). Dalton Lambert is the character's full name, so there is no separate real name to find. The actor is Ty Simpkins, billed fourth in the first two films and first in The Red Door, and some credits list the character as Dalton Lambert (archival footage).
Insidious (2011), directed by James Wan, opens with the Lamberts moving into a new house with their sons Dalton and Foster and their baby daughter. Dalton falls from a ladder in the attic, and the next day he cannot be woken. Doctors find no medical cause and declare him to be in a coma. Months later he comes home still unconscious, and the noises and sightings that unsettle the family begin from there. That quiet start is what makes the saga work, because the scares grow out of a child who cannot speak for himself.
He is the lead only in the Lambert family entries. Insidious: Chapter 3 follows Quinn Brenner, and Insidious: Out of the Further follows Gemma Hall. For the order of all six, see insidious movies in order.

Dalton's Story Arc Across the Insidious FilmsSpoilers
Dalton's arc runs from a comatose child in Insidious (2011) to a college student in The Red Door, and the Further is the thread that ties it together. In the first film, Elise Rainier explains that Dalton is not in a coma at all. He can project his spirit out of his body, and he has wandered into the Further, a dark realm where restless spirits want to use his empty body to return to the living world. His drawings help convince a skeptical Josh, who then travels into the Further, faces the red faced demon and finds his son. The two return to their bodies and the spirits in the house vanish.
In Insidious Chapter 2, also directed by James Wan, the roles flip. Josh is taken over by a spirit and turns violent toward his family, so Dalton goes into the spirit world to find his father's true self. Elise's ghost helps him, Carl is drawn in as well, and Dalton's actions pull Josh back. Carl then makes Josh and Dalton forget what happened.
The prequels touch him lightly. In Insidious: The Last Key (2018), directed by Adam Robitel, Elise passes through a red door in the Further and briefly sees a boy named Dalton in his bedroom. The film ends with Lorraine Lambert phoning Elise for help with her grandson Dalton, which leads straight into the first film.
In Insidious: The Red Door, directed by Patrick Wilson, Dalton is at college nine years after Chapter 2. His first art class has him paint the red door, and the exercise stirs up buried memories. At a party he sees a ghost and slips into the Further by accident. His roommate Chris shows him an online video about astral projection that features Elise, and Dalton tries to project while Chris guards his body. An unseen force attacks Chris, and when Dalton returns he sees the red faced demon from his childhood.
Dalton's Family and Allies
Dalton's closest relationship is with his father, Josh Lambert, and the saga treats their bond as the real subject. Josh had the same projection ability as a boy and buried the memory after an old woman's spirit stalked him, as Elise reveals in the first film. By The Red Door the two barely get along after Josh's divorce and the death of his mother Lorraine, and a tense drive to college ends in a fight.
Renai Lambert, played by Rose Byrne, is his mother. She sees a figure in the house in the first film, and in Chapter 2 she senses that something followed the family home. Patrick Wilson plays Josh in the first two films and again in The Red Door, which he also directs. In The Red Door Renai explains that Josh's father, Ben Burton, also projected but saw it as mental illness, and she helps Josh enter the Further to reach Dalton.
His brother Foster Lambert, played by Andrew Astor, is a smaller presence. In The Red Door Foster tells Dalton about a recurring dream of Josh trying to kill them, and later sends Josh a photo of Dalton's painting, which shows that Dalton is in danger. Dalton's baby sister is the youngest of the three children.
Elise Rainier, played by Lin Shaye, is his guide to the Further, and Specs and Tucker are her team. His antagonist is the lipstick face demon, the red faced figure of his childhood. His roommate Chris Winslow, played by Sinclair Daniel, shows him the online video about astral projection and guards his body while he tries it.
What Happened to Dalton in Insidious?Spoilers
Dalton survives every film he leads, and his story closes with him sealing the Further behind a coat of black paint. The earlier films leave him safe but unaware. In Insidious (2011) he comes back from the Further beside his father, yet Elise Rainier senses that Josh did not return alone, and she is strangled after photographing him. In Chapter 2 Dalton pulls Josh out of possession, and Carl then wipes the spirit world from both their memories, which is why the family looks settled when that film ends.
The Red Door is where the forgotten past comes back for him. As Dalton finishes his painting, he is pulled into the old basement attack, fights Josh there and lands in the demon's lair. The demon takes over his body and heads for his roommate Chris, but Josh frees him. With the demon behind them, they run to the red door. Josh stays on the wrong side to hold it shut so Dalton can get out.
Once he is back in his body, Dalton paints the door black and the Further is closed. His father's spirit guides Josh home, and Josh later visits him at college. They make peace over a new painting of Josh carrying Dalton out of the Further. After the credits, the light above the sealed door flickers on again.
Why did the demon want him? The first film says the spirits wanted to borrow his empty body, and The Red Door shows the demon doing it. Insidious: Out of the Further (2026), directed by Jacob Chase, follows Gemma Hall and her daughter Maya, so Dalton's own arc rests there. To find the films, see where to watch Insidious.
Dalton's Best Moments in the Insidious Films
In my opinion, Dalton's best moments are the ones where a quiet child is shown to be the strongest person in the room, and The Red Door gives him the most of them. These picks are opinion, not fact.
The attic fall and the unwakeable morning (Insidious, 2011). It could be argued that the saga is never scarier than here, because a doctor simply cannot explain why a boy will not wake. It is the feeling of a hospital waiting room, stretched over a whole film.
Dalton going in after his father (Chapter 2). Perhaps the neatest reversal in the series is that the rescued boy becomes the rescuer. With Elise's ghost helping, Dalton pulls Josh back from a possession that had turned him violent. It is a smaller set piece than the first film's trip through the Further, but it changes who the hero is.
The painted red door (The Red Door). A single art class exercise reopens the whole story, and I think it is the cleverest use of Dalton in the series, because the memory returns through his hands before it returns to his head.
Painting it black. Dalton seals the Further by painting over the red door, which is a very quiet way to end a saga of demons. As such, it is the moment I would show someone new to explain why the Lambert family story lands. If you are new to the series, start with the first film and read on through the Insidious timeline.
