The ending of Insidious: Out of the Further works because it pays off the courier ability instead of leaving it as set dressing, and in my opinion that is the best structural decision in the film.
Here is what happens. Gemma traps the house inside the Further, which cuts the threat off from the real world. Cyrus Lam, who promised the dead could be brought back and used Gemma and Maya to try, is consumed by the resurrected dead he tried to command. Gemma and her mother Ingrid have already reconciled in the Further, so the trap is not only a defeat of a villain but the closing of an old wound that began with the 1999 prologue in Pittsburgh. Maya's own ability to project is revealed along the way.
Why does it land? A courier moves things across a boundary, so the only clean way to end the threat is to change where the boundary is. Gemma does that literally, by leaving the house on the far side of it. Cyrus wanted the dead to cross over under his control, and the film undoes him with exactly that. Compare the earlier entries: in insidious the last key the danger is a single demon loose in a childhood home, and in insidious the red door it is a family's buried memory of the Further. Here the stakes are about the passage itself, and that is a bigger, more mechanical idea of how the Further works.
The cost is intimacy. Josh and Dalton Lambert carry two films of grief and a strained father and son bond, and Gemma and Maya get one film to build theirs, so the mother and daughter beats rely on the Ingrid reunion to do heavy lifting. Perhaps that is why Lin Shaye's Elise Rainier feels more like a presence than a guide this time, where in insidious chapter 3 she carried the story.
It could be argued that the Maya reveal does the opposite job and quietly reopens the door, since the family's gift stays in place after the immediate danger ends. No seventh film has been officially announced, so any follow up remains speculation.
