Who Plays Edward "Blackbeard" Teach?

Who Is Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean?

Blackbeard is the feared pirate captain of the Queen Anne's Revenge, and he appears in one of the five main films: On Stranger Tides (2011), directed by Rob Marshall. The credits name him Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Ian McShane plays him and is billed fourth, behind Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz and Geoffrey Rush.

The film is set around 1750, when Britain and Spain are both racing to find the Fountain of Youth. Blackbeard wants it because of a prophecy that he will die at the hands of a one legged man. To use the Fountain he needs a ritual with two silver chalices from Ponce de León's ship, the Santiago, plus the tear of a mermaid. That shopping list drives everything he does on screen.

Is he an actual pirate? In the saga he is a film character: a captain who hunts the Fountain of Youth, commands the Queen Anne's Revenge and has a daughter named Angelica. The whole series grew out of a Disneyland attraction that debuted in 1967, and the earlier villains were often cursed or undead, like the crew of the Black Pearl in Curse of the Black Pearl. Blackbeard arrives with a ritual and a prophecy instead.

On Stranger Tides cost $250 million to make and earned more than $1 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. The Pirates of the Caribbean box office page shows how that compares with the other films, and the Pirates of the Caribbean characters page covers the rest of the saga.

Blackbeard's Story in On Stranger TidesSpoilers

Blackbeard's arc follows one ritual from preparation to collapse, and he never gets to finish it. Around 1750, Jack Sparrow is pulled into the British and Spanish race for the Fountain of Youth and ends up on the Queen Anne's Revenge. Aboard, Jack meets Angelica, a former love, and learns she is Blackbeard's daughter.

Blackbeard is chasing the Fountain because of a prophecy that a one legged man will kill him. His ritual calls for two silver chalices from Ponce de León's ship, the Santiago, and one mermaid's tear. His crew takes a mermaid called Syrena, and a missionary named Philip falls for her. The tear is taken from her by force and she is left near death, which tells you plainly how he weighs a life against his plan.

Hector Barbossa has a personal score to settle, since Blackbeard cost him a leg, and he stabs Blackbeard with a poisoned sword. At the Fountain, Spanish forces turn up, throw the chalices into a pool and order the site destroyed. Philip sets Syrena free, and she hands the chalices to Jack.

Jack then sets a trap that turns Blackbeard's own method against him. He gets Blackbeard to drink from the chalice without the tear, and that cup kills him. In my opinion, the finish suits the character: a man who treats everyone as an ingredient loses to a swap of two cups, and it is a long way from the sword duels of the earlier films.

Blackbeard's Relationships: Angelica, Barbossa and Jack Sparrow

Blackbeard's three defining relationships are with his daughter Angelica, with Hector Barbossa, who wants him dead, and with Jack Sparrow, who is forced aboard his ship. Each one shapes a different part of the film.

Angelica, played by Penélope Cruz, is both his daughter and Jack's former love. Jack meets her aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge after he is dragged into the Fountain hunt and forced onto Blackbeard's ship. She is healed by the end of the film, and Jack then leaves her stranded on an island. Her ties to both men are what keep the story personal.

Barbossa, played by Geoffrey Rush, has lost his leg to Blackbeard and serves the British Crown when the film opens. That grudge gives the poisoned sword its motive. After Blackbeard dies, Barbossa takes over his ship, his crew and his sword, which is a quiet kind of victory for a character last seen fighting for the Pearl in At World's End.

Jack is a prisoner of Blackbeard's plan more than a partner in it. In the post credit scene, a voodoo doll of Jack, made earlier by Blackbeard, washes up on a beach. Syrena and Philip stand outside Blackbeard's circle, but they decide the outcome: she hands Jack the chalices, and Philip is the one who frees her.

How Does Blackbeard Die in Pirates of the Caribbean?Spoilers

Blackbeard dies at the Fountain of Youth after drinking from the silver chalice that does not hold the mermaid's tear. Jack Sparrow tricks him into taking the wrong cup, and the film shows that this kills him. Barbossa's poisoned sword wound comes earlier in the same story, but the chalice is what ends it.

The Fountain is wrecked in the aftermath, because the Spanish arrive, throw the chalices into a pool and order the place destroyed. Barbossa takes over Blackbeard's ship, crew and sword. Angelica survives, Syrena forgives Philip and the two return to the sea, and Jack strands Angelica on an island before setting off to free the Black Pearl. After the credits, a voodoo doll of Jack, made earlier by Blackbeard, washes up on a beach, and Angelica finds it and smiles.

How does Blackbeard control his ship? The film never spells out a mechanism. What it shows is a captain whose crew follows him, and a ship, crew and sword that pass to Barbossa once he is gone.

Will he return? He dies on screen, and the sixth film is still in development: Jerry Bruckheimer said at D23 that the team is talking with Johnny Depp and working on a screenplay, according to TheWrap on 2026-08-16. No cast, deal or release date is confirmed. Follow the latest on Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Blackbeard's Best Moments

Blackbeard's best moments are the ones where the ritual and the character meet, and in my opinion three stand out. The first is the capture of Syrena, because it shows the cost of his plan better than any speech could. The second is Barbossa's poisoned sword, which turns an old grudge over a lost leg into a plot point. The third is the chalice trick, where Jack Sparrow wins by controlling which cup Blackbeard picks.

I would also point to the post credit scene with the voodoo doll of Jack. It is a small beat, but it shows that Blackbeard made the doll earlier, and it ends the film on Angelica's smile rather than on a punchline.

Compared with the other captains in the saga, his plan runs on chalices, a prophecy and a daughter rather than a curse. Davy Jones and the Flying Dutchman belong to the sea, and Salazar's ghost crew belongs to the Devil's Triangle. That is why he rewards a rewatch, especially next to the other films in Pirates of the Caribbean movies ranked.

If you want to see him in action, On Stranger Tides streams on Disney Plus in the US, UK and Australia (checked 2026-11-03), and the full options are on the where to watch Pirates of the Caribbean page. If you are new to the saga, start with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in order.
