Curse of the Black Pearl Plot: The Setup

The Curse of the Black Pearl begins with a rescue and a stolen medallion, and everything else in the film grows out of those two details. Years ago, Governor Swann and his young daughter Elizabeth pull a boy named Will Turner from the wreck of a ship, and Elizabeth secretly keeps a gold medallion he was wearing.

Years later in Port Royal, the eccentric pirate Jack Sparrow arrives looking for a ship, while the grown Elizabeth is pursued by the navy officer Norrington. Then the cursed crew of the Black Pearl, led by Captain Barbossa, attacks the town and carries Elizabeth off, because they need the medallion she wears. Will, now a blacksmith who loves Elizabeth, teams up with Jack to chase the Pearl and get her back.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Soundtrack and Score

Klaus Badelt composed the score for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), and the score album, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," was released by Walt Disney Records on July 22, 2003. The album runs to 15 tracks and collects Badelt's music for the film, with Badelt as the only composer credited for the score.

What songs are in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl? One song is credited, and a character sings it on screen instead of a recording artist:

  • "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" by Elizabeth Swann (character)

Young Elizabeth sings "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" on the ship in the opening scene. She sings it again later, on the island where she is marooned with Jack Sparrow. That gives the tune two appearances in the story, one at the very start of the voyage and one during the stretch where Elizabeth and Jack are stranded together.

If you want to hear how the music changes from one film to the next, the scores of the other films in the saga are covered on the pirates of the caribbean soundtrack page on Cinvibe.

Full Plot of Curse of the Black PearlSpoilers

The full plot follows a rescue mission that turns into a race to break an Aztec gold curse, and it ends with Jack Sparrow finally commanding a ship. As children, Will Turner is rescued from a shipwreck by Governor Swann and his daughter Elizabeth, who secretly takes a gold medallion from around his neck.

Years later, Jack Sparrow arrives in Port Royal and is soon arrested, while Norrington is promoted and proposes to Elizabeth. The Black Pearl attacks the town, and its crew takes Elizabeth because her medallion is one of the cursed Aztec gold pieces they must return to lift their curse. The curse leaves the crew as undead skeletons in moonlight, and breaking it requires every coin to be returned along with a blood offering from the right bloodline.

Will frees Jack from jail, and together they take a navy ship and gather a crew to follow the Pearl. Barbossa's first attempt at the ritual fails because Elizabeth is not the person he thinks she is. Will and Elizabeth escape the cave, but the Pearl captures Jack and sinks their ship. Will surrenders to save Elizabeth, and Elizabeth promises to marry Norrington if he rescues Will.

Jack and Norrington plot an ambush, but Jack ends up bargaining with Barbossa and stalls the ritual. Jack secretly pockets a coin, frees Will, and fights Barbossa, while Will adds his own blood and the last coins to break the curse. Barbossa is killed and the navy defeats the rest of his crew. Back in Port Royal, Will rescues Jack from the gallows, Elizabeth stands with Will, and Norrington lets Jack escape. Jack falls into the sea and is picked up by the Black Pearl, which he now captains.

When and Where Did Curse of the Black Pearl Premiere?

The world premiere of The Curse of the Black Pearl took place on June 28, 2003 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Holding it at the park was a fitting choice, because the film is an homage to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride that opened there in 1967.

The US theatrical release followed on July 9, 2003, eleven days after the premiere. The UK opening came on August 8, 2003 and Australia followed on September 11, 2003. The US date is confirmed, while the UK and Australian dates are reported by The Numbers.

For how this opening compares with later films, the pirates of the caribbean box office page puts the grosses side by side.

How Does Curse of the Black Pearl End?Spoilers

The Curse of the Black Pearl ends with the curse broken, Barbossa dead and Jack Sparrow captaining the Black Pearl. The curse is lifted when Will returns the gold and his blood to the chest, and Barbossa dies as he becomes mortal again. Most of the crew is captured by the navy and sentenced to hang.

In my opinion, the smartest part of the ending is how the rules set up in the second act pay off in order. The curse needs every coin and a blood offering from the right bloodline. Barbossa's first ritual fails because Elizabeth is not the person he thinks she is, so the story has already told us the answer has to be Will, and it becomes a question of who gets him to the chest and when. It could be argued that Jack pocketing a coin is a deliberate hedge, since it keeps him in the fight with Barbossa rather than watching from the sidelines.

The final beats resolve the love triangle without cruelty. Will saves Jack from the gallows, Elizabeth chooses Will over Norrington, and her father accepts the match. Norrington lets Jack escape, so the navy officer ends the film as a rival who is more generous than he first appeared. Jack falls into the sea, is picked up by the Pearl and sails off as its captain, which leaves him free for further adventures.

How does that ending compare with the rest of the saga? In my opinion, it is the most self-contained one. This film wraps its curse, its romance and its pirate captain in 143 minutes, while dead mans chest runs 151 minutes and at worlds end runs 169. The money grew along with the running time: this film cost $140 million and earned $654 million worldwide, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End both went on to earn more. A later film such as on stranger tides came in at 136 minutes, but it was the only one of the five to change directors to Rob Marshall, whereas this first film belongs to Gore Verbinski's run. Perhaps that is why it still works best as a first watch on its own.

That open door is where the sequels begin. The next installment, Dead Man's Chest, picks up with Will and Elizabeth's wedding being broken up, and the wider sea lore of ships and curses is gathered under pirates of the caribbean curses. On the question of a sixth film, the only report on record is TheWrap on August 16, 2026, which says Jerry Bruckheimer said at D23 that the team is talking with Johnny Depp and working on a screenplay. No cast or deal is confirmed, and as of November 3, 2026 no studio or trade source gives a release date, as covered on the pirates of the caribbean 6 page.

Curse of the Black Pearl Filming Locations

The Curse of the Black Pearl was filmed in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean and at Los Angeles area sets, with the Port Royal Fort Charles set built on a bluff at Palos Verdes, California. Principal photography ran from October 9, 2002 to March 7, 2003.

The split shows on screen. The open water and island scenes were shot in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while the fort that guards Port Royal was a constructed set on a California bluff.

Curse of the Black Pearl Trivia

Curse of the Black Pearl trivia centers on its origin as a Disneyland ride and its five Oscar nominations. These are the facts that come up most.

  • The film is an homage to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, which debuted at Disneyland in 1967.
  • The world premiere was held at Disneyland on June 28, 2003, before the July 9 US release.
  • It received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Johnny Depp.
  • The Fort Charles set for Port Royal was built on a bluff at Palos Verdes, California.

  • The production budget was $140 million, and the film earned $654 million worldwide.
  • Principal photography ran from October 9, 2002 to March 7, 2003.

In my opinion, the Best Actor nomination for Depp is the detail that stands out, since it came for a film based on a theme park ride.
