What Is Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End About?

At World's End is about the fight to rescue Jack Sparrow from Davy Jones' Locker while Lord Cutler Beckett tightens his grip on the seas. Beckett, of the East India Trading Company, now controls the waters and has people hanged for any link to piracy. He also forces Davy Jones to serve him and sink pirate ships.

Jack is trapped in the Locker, and he never named a successor on the Brethren Court. So, Barbossa, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Tia Dalma and the Black Pearl crew decide to bring him back. Their first stop is Singapore, where they ask the pirate lord Sao Feng for the charts that lead to the Locker.

The story picks up directly from Dead Man's Chest, and the whole saga is laid out in our guide to pirates of the caribbean movies in order.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Soundtrack and Score

Hans Zimmer composed the score for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007), and the score album, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," came out on May 17, 2007 from Walt Disney Records with 13 tracks. It is the one release that carries the film's music, so it is the place to start if you want the sound of the third voyage on its own.

One song stands out from the score: "Hoist the Colours." It was written for the film, and it plays in two stages. A young boy sings it in the opening as pirates are led to the gallows, and a larger chorus takes it up later in the film. Brendyn Bell and The Singing Gallows Pirates are the credited artists.

That opening placement is a smart piece of staging, in my opinion, because a lone child's voice over a line of condemned prisoners tells you how grim the world has become before any dialogue does. The later chorus then pays it off. Zimmer had already scored the earlier sequel, and the franchise began as a Disneyland ride, so a sea shanty feels like a natural fit for the saga's tone.

If you want the composers and notable tracks for every film side by side, the pirates of the caribbean soundtrack page covers the full series.

At World's End Plot Explained in FullSpoilers

The plot of At World's End runs from Beckett's crackdown on piracy to a whirlpool battle between the Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman. Beckett crushes piracy and makes Davy Jones destroy pirate ships, which includes killing the Kraken. The nine Pirate Lords are called to Shipwreck Cove, but Jack's seat sits empty because he is in the Locker. In Singapore, Barbossa's group gets Sao Feng's charts after a fight with Company forces. Will secretly agrees to give Sao Feng the Pearl in exchange for help, because he wants to free his father, Bootstrap Bill, from the Flying Dutchman. The crew then sails to the Locker, finds Jack half mad, and returns with him to the living world.

The alliances break up fast once everyone is back. Sao Feng and Beckett's men attack, and Jack makes a private deal with Beckett to buy his own freedom. Sao Feng takes Elizabeth, believing she is the sea goddess Calypso, and he dies after Jones wounds him, naming her his successor. At Shipwreck Cove the Brethren Court argues over whether to fight at all. Barbossa frees Calypso, who was bound in human form as Tia Dalma, but she is angry at the pirates and summons a huge whirlpool instead of helping them.

The finale happens inside that whirlpool. The Pearl and the Dutchman fight, Barbossa marries Will and Elizabeth in the middle of the battle, and Jack and Will kill Jones by stabbing his heart. Will becomes captain of the Dutchman, and with its freed crew he helps wreck Beckett's ship, which kills Beckett. Will is allowed one day ashore with Elizabeth every ten years, so they spend a day together before he leaves her his heart in a chest. Jack, meanwhile, sets out in a small boat from Tortuga to look for the Fountain of Youth.

Where and When Did At World's End Premiere?

At World's End held its world premiere on May 19, 2007, at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, according to CBS News. That setting fits a series that began as a Disneyland attraction, the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

The film reached UK and Australian theaters on May 24, 2007, and US theaters on May 25, 2007 (the Memorial Day weekend opening), according to TMDB. It opened in 4,362 US theaters, the widest release at the time, and Screen Daily called it Disney's biggest day and date release.

The certification is PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia. At 169 minutes, it is the longest of the five main films, ahead of the 151 minutes of Dead Man's Chest.

What Happened at the End of At World's End?Spoilers

At the end of At World's End, Jack and Will stab Davy Jones' heart, the Dutchman sinks and rises again with Will in command, and Beckett dies when the freed Dutchman crew helps the pirate fleet destroy his ship. Will must ferry the dead for ten years and can come ashore only one day in that time, so he parts from Elizabeth. Barbossa takes the Pearl again to chase the Fountain of Youth, but Jack has already taken the map and goes off alone in a small boat.

Why does the ending land the way it does? In my opinion, because the film settles the trilogy's two debts in the same battle. Will's quest to free his father ends with Will taking the captain's job himself, and Jack's long habit of cutting private deals (his bargain with Beckett is the clearest case) ends with him sailing off alone anyway. It could be argued that this is the saga's most deliberate ending, since it closes the Jones and Beckett storylines, with only Jack's Fountain of Youth voyage left open.

The wedding in the middle of the whirlpool battle is the other piece to watch. Barbossa marries Will and Elizabeth while two ships circle each other, so the film folds a romance payoff into an action set piece rather than parking it between scenes. The cost, as the ending shows, is that the couple earn a single day together every ten years.

Is At World's End a good movie? My view is that it is the most ambitious of the five, though its crowded plot will not suit everyone, and taste decides that one. If you want to see where I rank it, check pirates of the caribbean movies ranked.

Is There an At World's End Post Credit Scene?Spoilers

Yes, At World's End has one post credit scene, set ten years after the main story. Elizabeth and her young son watch the Flying Dutchman return and Will come back to them, which pays off the one day on land he was promised in the finale.

The series does not return to Will's family until Dead Men Tell No Tales, where Henry Turner, Will's son, hunts for the Trident of Poseidon to free his father. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are both billed in that later film's cast.

Where Was At World's End Filmed?

At World's End was filmed on the Universal Studios backlot in California, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, in Palmdale, California, and on Molokai in Hawaii, with a second unit at Niagara Falls. The Singapore set was built on Stage 12 of the Universal backlot in a water tank, and it held about 40 structures in a tank roughly 80 by 130 feet.

The scenes in Davy Jones' Locker were shot at the Bonneville Salt Flats. A former air hangar in Palmdale was used for the final battle. Principal photography wrapped on December 12, 2006, on Molokai.
