On Stranger Tides Plot: The Setup

The plot of On Stranger Tides sends Captain Jack Sparrow into a race for the Fountain of Youth around 1750, when Britain and Spain are both hunting for it. Jack is dragged into the hunt and ends up forced aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, the ship of the feared pirate Blackbeard. There he meets Angelica, a former love of his who is also Blackbeard's daughter. Blackbeard needs a special ritual to use the Fountain, and that ritual calls for two silver chalices and the tear of a mermaid. Hector Barbossa is chasing the same prize, now serving the British Crown.

This is the fourth film in the saga, so it follows at worlds end in both release order and chronological order (the full sequence sits on the pirates of the caribbean movies in order page). Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who played Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann in the first three films, do not appear in the cast, and Gore Verbinski, who directed those three, handed the job to Rob Marshall. The whole saga began as a Disneyland ride that debuted in 1967, and it reached the screen with curse of the black pearl (2003). That makes this the first film to send Jack on a fresh quest under a new director.

Is On Stranger Tides Based on a Book?

Yes, loosely. The film draws on Tim Powers's 1987 novel On Stranger Tides, whose rights Disney bought in 2007, and Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott wrote the screenplay. If you are searching for the book, look for Powers's name, because the movie follows it only in part and the saga as a whole grew out of the theme park attraction rather than a novel.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Soundtrack and Score

Hans Zimmer composed the score for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and the music came out as the 18 track album "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" on Walt Disney Records on May 16, 2011.

The album is a score release, so it presents the film's orchestral music from start to finish rather than a collection of songs. No featured songs are credited for the film, which means there are no individual song placements to point to, and the music is best understood as Zimmer's scoring and nothing else.

Zimmer also composed the music for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, so On Stranger Tides continues a run of films scored by the same composer. If you are coming to the album from those films, you will find the same name on the cover, and 18 tracks give you the whole score in one sitting.

  • Composer: Hans Zimmer (score)
  • Album: "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (score), Walt Disney Records
  • Released: May 16, 2011, 18 tracks

Full Plot of On Stranger TidesSpoilers

The full plot of On Stranger Tides follows one ritual: two silver chalices from Ponce de León's ship, the Santiago, plus a mermaid's tear. Blackbeard wants the Fountain because of a prophecy that he will die at the hands of a man with one leg, and he is willing to drag Jack, Angelica and a whole crew across the seas to beat death.

Blackbeard's crew captures a mermaid named Syrena, and a young missionary named Philip falls for her. Her tear is taken by force and she is left close to death. Barbossa, who has lost his leg to Blackbeard, wants revenge, and he stabs Blackbeard with a poisoned sword. That sets up the final stretch, with every faction converging on the Fountain at once.

At the Fountain, the Spanish arrive, toss the chalices into a pool and order the place destroyed. Philip frees Syrena, and she passes the chalices to Jack. Jack then tricks Blackbeard into drinking from the chalice that has no tear, and that is what kills him. Angelica is healed, Syrena forgives Philip, and the two return to the sea.

The aftermath splits the survivors. Barbossa takes over Blackbeard's ship, crew and sword, while Jack leaves Angelica stranded on an island. Gibbs uses Jack's compass to find the Revenge, and Jack recovers the Black Pearl from its bottle.

Premiere, Release Dates and Box Office

On Stranger Tides held its world premiere at Disneyland Park on May 7, 2011, billed as the first outdoor 3D film premiere, with proceeds going to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Holding it at the park fits the saga's origin as a Disneyland attraction, and the earlier films followed the same pattern: The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered at Disneyland on June 28, 2003 and Dead Man's Chest on June 24, 2006.

The public release rolled out over three days. The UK opened on May 18, 2011, Australia on May 19 and the US on May 20. The film is rated PG-13 in the US, 12A in the UK and M in Australia.

On the box office, Box Office Mojo lists $241 million domestic and $806 million international for a worldwide total of $1.05 billion on a $250 million budget. Roughly three quarters of the gross came from outside the US. That makes it the second highest grossing of the five main films, behind only Dead Man's Chest, while its domestic figure is the lowest of the first four films. The full comparison is on the pirates of the caribbean box office page.

On Stranger Tides Ending ExplainedSpoilers

The ending of On Stranger Tides comes down to one trick: Jack lets Blackbeard drink from the chalice that has no mermaid's tear, and that kills him. In my opinion, the neatest part is how the film pays off the prophecy of a man with one leg. Barbossa is the one with the poisoned sword, so Blackbeard is wounded by the very man the prophecy warned about, and it could be argued that Jack's chalice trick simply finishes the job.

The Fountain is then wrecked, since the Spanish order it destroyed once they have thrown the chalices into the pool. That removes the prize for every party in the race. Angelica survives, and Syrena forgives Philip before the pair return to the sea, which gives the film a gentler emotional resolution than the pirate plot around it.

The last beats set up the next adventure. Barbossa now holds Blackbeard's ship, crew and sword, a big promotion from where he started the film, and Jack strands Angelica on an island before going to free the Black Pearl. Compared with the way at worlds end closed a three film arc, this ending is looser, and that suits a film built to leave Jack and Barbossa free for more. Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) brought both back.

As for a sixth film, TheWrap reported on August 16, 2026 that Bruckheimer said at D23 the team is talking with Johnny Depp and working on a screenplay, with no cast or deal confirmed and no release date. Status and updates are on the pirates of the caribbean 6 page.

Is There a Post Credit Scene in On Stranger Tides?Spoilers

Yes, the film has a single scene after the credits, and it is a short one. Blackbeard's voodoo doll of Jack, which he used earlier in the story to hurt him, washes up on a beach. Angelica finds it, picks it up and smiles.

The shot lands right after Jack leaves her stranded on an island, so it reads as a hint that she still holds a grudge, and perhaps some power over him. In my opinion, it is a neat little tag, because it turns a tool of her father's into her own.

On Stranger Tides Filming Locations

On Stranger Tides was filmed in four regions: Hawaii, the Los Angeles area, Puerto Rico and the London area. Hawaii supplied the jungles, beaches and sea scenes, with Ke'e Beach and the Blue Cave on Kauai among the named spots, across Kauai and Oahu.

In the Los Angeles area, the Whitecap Bay water set was built at Universal's Falls Lake, and the HMS Surprise scenes were shot off Long Beach. Puerto Rico covered the Spanish fort scenes in Old San Juan, plus a small island shoot near Fajardo.

The English leg used real heritage sites and studio sets. The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich and Hampton Court Palace stood in for the royal side of the story, and Pinewood Studios hosted sets including the Fountain of Youth.

On Stranger Tides Trivia

The most useful On Stranger Tides trivia is about how the film was built, because the production was unusually physical for a CG heavy fantasy.

  • Principal photography ran 106 days, from June 14 to November 18, 2010.
  • The film was shot in digital 3D with paired RED cameras, one shooting through a mirror.
  • The Fountain of Youth set on Pinewood's 007 Stage took three months to build and held about 1.5 million gallons of water.
  • Synchronized swimmers in tracking suits were filmed to animate the CG mermaids.
  • Keith Richards returned as Captain Teague.
  • Rodrigo y Gabriela contributed to Zimmer's score, and Eric Whitacre wrote choir cues.
  • Among the five main films, only Dead Man's Chest grossed more worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
  • The ride that started the saga debuted at Disneyland in 1967, and this film's world premiere was held at Disneyland Park.

Facts

FAQs

How long is POTC On Stranger Tides?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides runs 136 minutes, or 2 hours 16 minutes. That is shorter than the first three films, at 143, 151 and 169 minutes, and longer than Dead Men Tell No Tales at 129 minutes.

Why was pirates 4 so expensive?

The budget was $250 million according to Box Office Mojo, and the scale of the production helps explain it. The shoot ran 106 days in digital 3D with paired RED cameras, moved across Hawaii, California, Puerto Rico and England, and included a Fountain of Youth set at Pinewood that took three months to build and held about 1.5 million gallons of water. The spending paid off at the box office, with $1.05 billion worldwide.

Who plays the mermaids in Stranger Tides?

Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey plays Syrena, the mermaid at the center of the story. The wider group of CG mermaids was animated from footage of synchronized swimmers in tracking suits.

Why were Will and Elizabeth not in Stranger Tides?

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not in the cast of On Stranger Tides, which sends Jack Sparrow on a separate quest with Angelica, Blackbeard, Philip and Syrena. Both actors are credited again in Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), so their characters return later in the saga.

Why did Syrena take Philip underwater?

Spoiler warning: Syrena returns to the sea with Philip because she forgives him after he frees her at the Fountain. Earlier, Philip, a missionary, falls for her after Blackbeard's crew captures her, and her tear is taken by force.
