Who Plays Hector Barbossa?

Who Is Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean?

Barbossa is Captain Hector Barbossa, the commander of the Black Pearl crew in the first film. He is played by Geoffrey Rush, who is billed second in Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), directed by Gore Verbinski, and third in On Stranger Tides (2011) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).

The credits use two forms of the name: the first and third films list him as Barbossa alone, while the fourth and fifth list Hector Barbossa, which is his full name.

In the opening film his crew is cursed by Aztec gold, which leaves them as undead skeletons in moonlight, and his goal is to return every coin and complete a blood offering from the right bloodline. That plan drives the story, and it is the reason Elizabeth Swann is carried off from Port Royal. The whole saga began as a film adaptation of the Disneyland attraction that debuted in 1967.

Barbossa's Story Arc Across Five FilmsSpoilers

The captain's arc runs from cursed villain to dead man, then to resurrected guide, rival and finally sacrificial father figure, and he appears in all five main films. Each film changes what he wants, which is why he never plays as the same character twice.

The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). His first attempt at the ritual fails because Elizabeth is not the person he thinks she is. Jack Sparrow then bargains with him and stalls the ritual. Jack secretly pockets a coin, frees Will Turner and fights the captain, while Will adds his own blood and the last coins to break the curse. He dies as he becomes mortal again, and Jack ends up captaining the Pearl.

Dead Man's Chest (2006). The Dead Man's Chest ending introduces the resurrected Hector Barbossa as the guide Tia Dalma brings to a crew that plans to rescue Jack at the world's end.

At World's End (2007). His group gets Sao Feng's charts in Singapore after a fight with Company forces. At Shipwreck Cove he frees Calypso, who had been bound in human form as Tia Dalma, though she is angry at the pirates and summons a huge whirlpool. During the battle in that whirlpool he marries Will and Elizabeth. Afterward he takes the Pearl again to chase the Fountain of Youth, but Jack has already taken the map. See At World's End for the full film.

On Stranger Tides (2011). He has lost his leg to Blackbeard and wants revenge. He stabs Blackbeard with a poisoned sword, then takes over Blackbeard's ship, crew and sword. In the film's setup he is also serving the British Crown. The On Stranger Tides page covers the Fountain sequence in more detail.

Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). Captain Barbossa learns that Armando Salazar has destroyed his fleet, gets Jack's compass from the sea witch Shansa and makes a deal with Salazar to hand Jack over. He then switches sides and helps free the shrunken Black Pearl so the group can reach the Trident's island, a turn that sets up the sacrifice that ends his story. The saga's order is laid out on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies in order page, and the Pirates of the Caribbean timeline shows where each appearance sits.

Barbossa's Relationships and Rivalries

His most important relationships are with Jack Sparrow, with his daughter Carina Smyth, and with the two captains he fights in the later films, Blackbeard and Salazar. Each one shows a different side of him.

Jack Sparrow. The captain and Jack Sparrow are rivals who keep needing each other. In the first film they are enemies, and in the third film he is part of the group that goes to the Locker to bring Jack back. In the fifth film he gets Jack's compass from Shansa and offers Jack to Salazar, then turns on that deal and helps free the Pearl.

Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann. In the first film the Black Pearl crew takes Elizabeth Swann because her medallion is one of the cursed gold pieces, and Will adds his own blood to break the curse. In the third film the captain marries the pair during the whirlpool battle. The Will Turner profile covers the other side of that arrangement.

Carina Smyth. Jack and the captain work out in the fifth film that the astronomer Carina Smyth is his daughter. She carries a diary left by her unknown father, and a star tattoo that matches it is how she recognizes him at the end.

Blackbeard. In the fourth film he has lost his leg to Blackbeard and stabs him with a poisoned sword. He then takes over Blackbeard's ship, crew and sword.

Armando Salazar. In the fifth film, Captain Salazar destroys his fleet, and the two strike a deal that he later breaks.

Calypso. In the third film he frees Calypso from her human form as Tia Dalma, and her anger at the pirates is what produces the whirlpool.

Does Barbossa Survive? His Death and FateSpoilers

Barbossa dies twice in the main films, and the second death is final. He is killed in the first film when the curse breaks, returns as the resurrected guide at the end of the second film, and sacrifices himself in the fifth film.

In Curse of the Black Pearl, the curse is lifted when Will returns the gold and his blood to the chest, and the captain dies as he becomes mortal again. The Dead Man's Chest ending then brings him back, and the third film uses him as the crew's guide to the Locker.

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, he gives his life to kill Salazar so the others can get away, after Carina recognizes him as her father by the star tattoo that matches her diary. Henry destroys the Trident, which lifts every sea curse, and Carina takes his name. Jack regains the Black Pearl and Will is freed. This is the last time he is seen alive in the main films. A post credit scene shows the shadow of Davy Jones entering Will and Elizabeth's bedroom, which hints at more trouble to come.

Why was he killed off? Within the story, the sacrifice pays off the reveal that Carina is his daughter and gives him the chance to save the others. No production reason beyond the story has been published.

As for a sixth film, TheWrap reported on August 16, 2026 that producer Jerry Bruckheimer said at D23 the team is talking with Johnny Depp and working on a screenplay. No cast or deal is confirmed, and no release date has been given. The film is in development, so Hector's place in it is unconfirmed. Details are on the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 page.

Barbossa's Best Moments, Ranked by Impact

In my opinion, the captain's best moments are the ones where his plans are practical rather than showy, and four scenes stand out. A different fan could order them differently.

1. The failed ritual in the first film. His first attempt at the blood offering fails because Elizabeth is not the person he thinks she is. It is the plot's hinge, and an early example of a villain whose scheme fails for a reason the audience can follow.

2. The wedding in the whirlpool. In At World's End, he marries Will and Elizabeth while the Pearl and the Dutchman fight. It could be argued that this is the saga's best example of a set piece carrying character, because the vows happen in the middle of the battle.

3. The poisoned sword in the fourth film. He has lost his leg to Blackbeard, and his revenge in On Stranger Tides is a stab with a poisoned sword rather than a straight duel. It is the same cunning from the first film, with a personal motive.

4. The star tattoo in the fifth film. The recognition scene, where Carina matches his tattoo to her diary, is the reason his death lands. It is the saga's cleanest use of an earlier detail.

Is Barbossa a good guy? In my opinion, not entirely. He is a pirate who tries to hand Jack to Salazar, then does the right thing when it matters, so he is best described as a self interested rogue who earns a good ending.

Who was more powerful, Jack Sparrow or Barbossa? Perhaps the older captain in a straight fight, since he commands crews and fleets across the films, while Jack gets by on bargains and luck, and in the third film it is Hector who frees Calypso. That being said, Jack ends the saga holding the Pearl, which is the prize both men chase. For a ranking of the films themselves, see the Pirates of the Caribbean movies ranked page.

FAQs

Why was Barbossa killed off?

In the story, he dies in Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) by sacrificing himself to kill Armando Salazar so Jack, Henry and Carina can escape. It pays off his arc and the reveal that Carina is his daughter. No production reason beyond the story has been published.

Is Barbossa a good guy?

He starts as the villain of the first film, where his cursed crew attacks Port Royal and takes Elizabeth Swann. In later films he works with Jack, Will and Elizabeth, and he finally gives his life to save others, though he also tries to hand Jack to Salazar. He is best described as a self interested pirate who ends on the right side.

Who is Barbossa based on, and what does the name Barbossa mean?

The films are adapted from the Disneyland attraction that debuted in 1967. No official source ties the character to one historical pirate or explains the meaning of the surname, so any origin offered for it is speculation.

Who was more powerful, Jack Sparrow or Barbossa?

It depends on what you measure. The older captain commands crews and fleets across the films, and in At World's End he frees Calypso, while Jack relies on bargains and luck. Jack ends up as captain of the Black Pearl in the first and fifth films, so neither clearly outranks the other.

Does Barbossa survive?

No. He is killed when the curse breaks in The Curse of the Black Pearl, returns at the end of Dead Man's Chest, and dies for good in Dead Men Tell No Tales when he sacrifices himself to kill Salazar. Nothing is confirmed about him in a sixth film, which Jerry Bruckheimer says is in the screenplay stage.
