Who Plays Elizabeth Swann?

Elizabeth Swann Pirates of the Caribbean: Who She Is

Elizabeth Swann is the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann of Port Royal, and Keira Knightley plays her in the films, which credit the role as Elizabeth Swann and Young Elizabeth.

She is introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), directed by Gore Verbinski. As a girl, she and her father pull a boy named Will Turner from a shipwreck, and she secretly keeps the gold medallion he was wearing. Years later, the navy officer Norrington proposes to her, while Will, now a blacksmith, loves her. Then the cursed crew of the Black Pearl attacks the town and carries her off, because her medallion is one of the cursed Aztec gold pieces they need to lift their curse.

Which films is she in? Knightley is billed fourth in The Curse of the Black Pearl, third in Dead Man's Chest (2006), fourth in At World's End (2007) and fifteenth in Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). Gore Verbinski directed the first three, and Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning directed the fifth. On Stranger Tides (2011), directed by Rob Marshall, follows Jack Sparrow, Angelica and Blackbeard, and she is not among its top 15 billed names.

The whole saga grew out of the Disneyland attraction that debuted in 1967, but the Swann family and the Port Royal setting belong to the films. For the full cast list, see the pirates of the caribbean cast page, and for the wider line up, the pirates of the caribbean characters index.

Elizabeth Swann Movies: Her Story Arc Film by FilmSpoilers

Across the four films she appears in, Elizabeth moves from a captive on the Black Pearl to a married woman who waits for her husband at the edge of the sea. Each film changes what she wants and what she is willing to give up.

In The Curse of the Black Pearl, she is taken because of the medallion, and Barbossa's first attempt at the ritual fails because she is not the person he thinks she is. She and Will escape the cave, but the Pearl captures Jack and sinks their ship. Will surrenders to save her, and Elizabeth promises to marry Norrington if he rescues Will. By the end, she stands with Will in Port Royal, and she chooses him over Norrington with her father accepting the match.

Dead Man's Chest has Beckett arresting Will and Elizabeth, and he sends Will after Jack's compass in exchange for their freedom. Elizabeth escapes prison with her father's help, steals the Letters of Marque from Beckett and heads to Tortuga. There she finds a drunk Norrington and Jack, and Jack tricks her into using his compass to locate the chest. On Isla Cruces, she watches Jack, Will and Norrington fight a three way sword duel over the heart. When the Kraken comes for the Black Pearl, she realizes it wants only Jack, and she chains him to the mast so the rest can escape.

At World's End gives her the biggest role in the saga, in my opinion. She goes to Singapore with Barbossa, Will and Tia Dalma to get Sao Feng's charts, and Sao Feng takes her, believing she is the sea goddess Calypso. He dies after Jones wounds him and names her his successor. At Shipwreck Cove, the Brethren Court argues over whether to fight, and in the whirlpool battle Barbossa marries Will and Elizabeth while the Pearl and the Dutchman trade fire. Will then becomes captain of the Dutchman, and the couple get one day together.

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, she is no longer the lead, and she returns at the end when the Trident of Poseidon is destroyed and Will is freed. She is reunited with Will and with Henry Turner, Will's son.

Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner: Her Key Relationships

Elizabeth's defining relationship is with Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, who is her husband from the third film onward. They meet as children when Will is rescued from the wreck, and she keeps his medallion without telling anyone. Will grows up to be a blacksmith in Port Royal, and in the first film he teams up with Jack to chase the Pearl and get her back. In Dead Man's Chest, their wedding is broken up by Lord Cutler Beckett, and in At World's End Barbossa marries them in the middle of the whirlpool battle. A scene after the credits, set ten years later, shows Elizabeth and her young son watching the Flying Dutchman return and Will come back to them.

Who did Elizabeth Swann almost marry? That was Norrington, played by Jack Davenport. He proposes after being promoted in the first film, and she promises to marry him only if he rescues Will. He is the rival suitor on paper, and in Dead Man's Chest he is the one who takes the heart to Beckett.

Her link to Jack Sparrow runs through three films. In the first, Jack's bargain with Barbossa stalls the ritual, which buys Will time to reach her. In the second, Jack tricks her into using his compass, and she answers by chaining him to the mast when the Kraken arrives. Barbossa, for his part, is the one who marries her to Will in the whirlpool battle of the third film.

Her father, Governor Weatherby Swann, played by Jonathan Pryce in the first three films, is the steadiest tie. He helps her escape prison in Dead Man's Chest, and he accepts Will at the end of the first film. Her connection to Henry Turner closes the saga in Dead Men Tell No Tales, when she is reunited with both Will and the boy.

What Happens to Elizabeth Swann in the End?Spoilers

Elizabeth Swann lives through the whole saga, and her story closes with her family back together: Will Turner at her side and Henry Turner, their son, beside them.

Her last big moment comes in At World's End. The price of Will's new job as captain of the Flying Dutchman is a long separation, with a single day on land once a decade. The couple spend that day together, and Will leaves his heart with her in a chest before he sails. The scene after the credits jumps ahead ten years, where Elizabeth and the boy stand on the shore as the Dutchman returns and Will walks back to them.

Dead Men Tell No Tales then undoes the arrangement. Henry destroys the Trident of Poseidon, every sea curse ends, and Will is released from the Dutchman and reunited with his wife and son. Its own scene after the credits is a small chill: the shadow of Davy Jones crosses the bedroom where Elizabeth and Will sleep, and Will wakes, sees nothing and drifts off, missing the barnacles on the floor by the bed.

What about a sixth film? Her place in it is open. TheWrap reported in August 2026 that producer Jerry Bruckheimer said at D23 that the team is talking with Johnny Depp and working on a screenplay, and that no cast or deal is confirmed. The latest status sits on the pirates of the caribbean 6 page.

Best Elizabeth Swann Moments, Ranked by Staging

In my opinion, Elizabeth's best scenes work because they show her making a hard choice in the middle of a set piece, and these are the four I would pick.

First, the Kraken scene in Dead Man's Chest. She realizes the monster wants only Jack, and she chains him to the mast so the others can escape. It could be argued that this is the most important decision she makes in the saga, because it costs her something and it moves the plot into the third film.

Second, the wedding in the whirlpool in At World's End. Barbossa marries Will and Elizabeth while the Pearl and the Dutchman fight, so the ceremony is staged inside the stunt rather than around it. That being said, it only lands because the first two films built the couple up.

Third, the Singapore sequence, where Sao Feng takes her, believing she is Calypso, and then names her his successor as he dies. It gives her a role in the pirate world that nobody expected after the first film.

Fourth, the first film's failed ritual, when Barbossa's attempt does not work because Elizabeth is not who he thinks she is. It turns the medallion she took as a girl into the plot's hinge, and it is a clean piece of setup and payoff.

Facts

FAQs

Which Pirates of the Caribbean is Elizabeth Swann in?

Elizabeth Swann appears in four of the five main films: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man's Chest (2006), At World's End (2007) and Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017). She is not among the top 15 billed names for On Stranger Tides (2011). Keira Knightley plays her in each of the four.

Why did Jack Sparrow save Elizabeth?

Jack's clearest help comes in The Curse of the Black Pearl, where his bargain with Barbossa stalls the ritual while he secretly pockets a coin, which buys time until Will arrives. The favor is returned in Dead Man's Chest, where Elizabeth chains Jack to the mast when the Kraken comes.

Who did Elizabeth Swann almost marry?

She almost married Norrington, played by Jack Davenport. He proposes in The Curse of the Black Pearl, and she promises to marry him if he rescues Will. At the end of that film she chooses Will, and her father accepts the match.

Do Will and Elizabeth stay together?

Yes, they marry and stay together, though the sea keeps them apart for years. In At World's End, Barbossa marries Will and Elizabeth during the whirlpool battle, and Will leaves her his heart in a chest before he sails. The scene after the credits shows him returning ten years later, and in Dead Men Tell No Tales he is freed and reunites with Elizabeth and Henry.

Did Will forgive Elizabeth for kissing Jack?

The films never show a break between them over it. Will and Elizabeth are married by Barbossa in At World's End, Will leaves her his heart in a chest, and he returns to her and Henry in Dead Men Tell No Tales. Judging by those scenes, their bond survives everything that happens around Jack Sparrow in Dead Man's Chest.

Who is Elizabeth Swann's husband, and who plays Elizabeth Swann?

Her husband is Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom. Elizabeth Swann is a fictional character played by Keira Knightley, and the films credit the role as Elizabeth Swann and Young Elizabeth.
