Umbrella Corporation in the Resident Evil Movies
The Umbrella Corporation is the fictional company whose virus research causes every outbreak in the Resident Evil movies, from Resident Evil (2002) to Resident Evil (2026). It is not a real company, and across the three film runs it appears as a secret research lab, a private army, a cover up machine and, by the end of the Alice films, a ruin.

What Is the Umbrella Corporation in the Resident Evil Movies?
The Umbrella Corporation is the corporate villain of the Resident Evil films, a company that builds viruses and engineered soldiers in secret and then loses control of them. It is the one constant across three separate runs of films.
Those runs are the six film story starring Milla Jovovich as Alice, which begins with Paul W. S. Anderson's Resident Evil (2002); the reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), directed by Johannes Roberts; and Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026). Alice was created for the films and is not in the games, so her war with Umbrella belongs to the first run alone. The Japanese animated films are mentioned here only in passing.
Think of Umbrella as the landlord of the franchise: it owns the building, hides the faults and is always the reason the lights go out. If you want the films in the order they were made, the Resident Evil movies in order page lays out both release and chronological order.
What Does the Umbrella Corporation Do?Spoilers
In the films, the Umbrella Corporation runs hidden research and treats everyone near that research as expendable. Its first and most famous site is the Hive, a secret underground lab beneath a mansion, which Alice and a man named Spence were posted to guard in Resident Evil (2002). When a thief steals the experimental T-virus and releases it, the Hive's computer, the Red Queen, kills the staff to contain the outbreak and seals the building. A commando team led by a man called One is then sent in to find out why.
The sequels widen the business. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), directed by Alexander Witt, shows Umbrella testing Nemesis, a huge engineered soldier, on living survivors. Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), directed by Russell Mulcahy, reveals Project Alice, a program that produces clones of Alice and leaves the failures in a pit. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) places a secret underwater base in Kamchatka where outbreaks are staged in replica cities.
There is a consumer side too. A mid credits scene in Apocalypse shows part of the "Regenerate" teaser, a skin product ad in which the user turns into a zombie. Umbrella sells to the public and experiments on it, which is about as grim as a corporate slogan gets. Alice herself sits at the center of this, a person the company treats as both product and weapon. You can follow her through the films on the Alice Resident Evil character page.
Who Owns the Umbrella Corporation?Spoilers
The films credit Dr. James Marcus with founding Umbrella and Dr. Isaacs with taking control of it. In the games, the founder is Ozwell E. Spencer, a name the films echo in the Spencer Mansion. The film history arrives late, in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which opened in US theaters on January 27, 2017 after an earlier release in Japan on December 23, 2016. Marcus starts an experimental virus project to save his dying daughter Alicia. When a treated child turns into a zombie, he shuts the project down. His partner Isaacs has Wesker kill Marcus, adopts Alicia and takes control of the company.
Before that reveal, the chain of command is murky. In Resident Evil: Extinction, Isaacs breeds a new kind of zombie against Wesker's orders, and Wesker later learns in Tokyo that the North American facility has been lost. In Resident Evil: Retribution, Wesker appears on a screen and says the Red Queen AI now controls Umbrella, which is a strange thing for a company executive to admit.
The reboot muddies things further: in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, Wesker is secretly working for another side and is after the virus created by William Birkin. For the people on screen, see the Albert Wesker page and the Red Queen Resident Evil page.
What Do Umbrella's Soldiers Do in the Resident Evil Movies?Spoilers
Umbrella's private armed force appears in the films as commando teams, troops and convoys that carry out the company's orders. In Resident Evil (2002), One's commando team enters the Hive and loses One and several soldiers to the laser trap in the Red Queen's corridor.
In Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Major Cain seals the exit bridge of Raccoon City and traps the living and the undead together. At the extraction point he kills Dr. Ashford and forces Alice to fight Nemesis, and the survivors later throw Cain out to the zombies. In Resident Evil: Retribution, Umbrella gunships storm the Arcadia in an assault led by Jill Valentine, who is under Umbrella's mind control. In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Isaacs fields a convoy that the survivors have to fight off.
The National Guard soldiers in Resident Evil (2026) are the people the stolen antidote is meant for, and they are still landing on the roof when the film ends.
Umbrella in the Alice Films (2002 to 2017)Spoilers
Across the six Alice films, Umbrella goes from a hidden lab to a global extinction plan. Resident Evil (2002) ends with Umbrella's team taking Alice and a mutating Matt into custody at the mansion, with Matt slated for the Nemesis Program. Alice wakes strapped to a table in Raccoon City Hospital and walks out into a wrecked, empty city.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse turns Raccoon City into a sealed arena. Dr. Ashford's research led to the T-virus, which was originally meant to treat his daughter's genetic condition. A nuclear warhead destroys the city, and news reports blame a power plant meltdown and hide Umbrella's role. Dr. Isaacs then reveals that Alice's escape was part of Umbrella's plan.
Resident Evil: Extinction is set five years after the Raccoon City outbreak, with the T-virus having turned most of the planet into desert. Alice defeats a mutated Isaacs in a replica of the Hive's laser corridor, then appears at an executive meeting in Tokyo. Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, sends her to Alaska and Los Angeles in search of Arcadia, which turns out to be an Umbrella trap. Wesker escapes her by parachute.
Resident Evil: Retribution shows Umbrella staging outbreaks in replica cities at its Kamchatka base, with clones of Alice's allies. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter then lays out Isaacs's plan to release the virus and wipe out humanity while the rich and powerful sleep in cryogenic storage. Wesker destroys himself, Alicia, the Hive and the sleeping elite. Alice survives, because the antivirus only cleared the T-virus from her own body, and the Red Queen gives her Alicia's childhood memories. Alice is revealed to be Alicia's clone.
Umbrella in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)Spoilers
In the 2021 reboot, Umbrella is caught at the moment before it collapses. The year is 1998, and Raccoon City is a dying town that once housed the company. Claire Redfield arrives to warn her brother Chris that something is wrong, and she has a personal stake: as a child at the orphanage she befriended Lisa Trevor, a girl harmed by Umbrella's experiments.
No single executive gives the orders here. Wesker secretly serves another side and wants the virus William Birkin created, while Birkin, cornered in the underground lab, injects himself with a new strain and turns into a monster. Umbrella meanwhile prepares to wipe out the city, and the survivors flee on an underground train with Birkin in pursuit.
Leon fires a rocket launcher to finish the creature. Claire, Chris, Jill, Leon and Birkin's young daughter Sherry walk out of the tunnel alive, even though Umbrella has reported no survivors. As in Apocalypse, the city is destroyed and the official story buries the truth. A scene after the credits has Wesker waking in a body bag, unable to see, until a woman hands him sunglasses and says she is Ada Wong. Hannah John-Kamen plays Jill Valentine, and the full line up is on the Resident Evil cast page.
Umbrella in Resident Evil (2026)Spoilers
In Zach Cregger's Resident Evil (2026), Umbrella has no executives or soldiers on screen at first, only its damage. The film never says the name of the virus. Bryan is a medical courier with no combat skills, and he takes a double pay job delivering a package to Raccoon City General Hospital on a snowy night. A little girl bites him on the way.
The hospital is full of mutated victims whose bodies shift and merge in the manner of John Carpenter's The Thing. Bryan works his way up to a secure Umbrella laboratory on the top floor. His package holds a key ingredient for an antidote, intended for National Guard soldiers about to land on the roof, and the lead scientist Carl lets him in. By then the bite has started to change him.
Bryan kills the scientists, absorbs them into his growing body and reaches for the syringe. He and the last scientist crash through a window onto a damaged part of the building, where Bryan, fully consumed, kills him. The syringe drops out of reach and the antidote is gone. Helicopters close in as he roars, and the final shot pushes into his eye and infected bloodstream. Syfy's ending explainer describes no sequel setup, so Umbrella's fate is left open. The film opened on September 18, 2026, and the new Resident Evil movie page tracks what follows.
Is the Umbrella Corporation a Real Company?
No, the Umbrella Corporation is not a real company, and no actual business is behind the outbreaks, the Hive or Raccoon City. It is a fictional corporation from Capcom's Resident Evil games that the films adopted, where it plays the organization that makes the horror possible.
The films reinforce the point by making Umbrella a company that sells products to the public, such as the "Regenerate" skin ad, while hiding what it does in private. If you want to browse props and collectibles inspired by the company, the Resident Evil merchandise page covers them. If you want to see how the games and films differ in their version of Umbrella, the Resident Evil games vs movies page covers that.
Does Umbrella Corp Still Exist in the Films?Spoilers
Whether Umbrella Corp still exists depends on which film run you ask, and no run gives a final answer about the company itself. In the Alice films, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter ends with the Hive destroyed and Wesker, Alicia and the sleeping elite gone with it. The antivirus will take years to spread across the world, and Alice vows to keep fighting the undead until then. The company's leadership is finished, even if its creations are not.
In the 2021 reboot, Umbrella wipes out Raccoon City and reports no survivors, so the company is still operating at the end of that story and Wesker is still in play. In Resident Evil (2026), the only antidote is lost and the outbreak looks unstoppable, although the film does not show what Umbrella does next.
Each ending answers only its own story, so you cannot read one run's finale as the fate of the others.
Umbrella Explained: What Went Wrong for the CorporationSpoilers
In my opinion, the Umbrella Corporation fails in the films for one repeating reason: it builds safeguards that turn on it. The Red Queen kills the Hive's staff to contain an outbreak the company caused, and by Retribution Wesker says she controls Umbrella, which means the first safeguard ended up running the business. Nemesis is built to hunt survivors, and instead he turns on Cain's troops and dies protecting Alice. Isaacs defies Wesker in Extinction and breeds his own zombies. It could be argued that few franchise villains lose control of so many of their own products.
The sharpest irony is Alice. Project Alice makes clones of her, and The Final Chapter reveals that she is a clone of Alicia Marcus, the founder's daughter. Umbrella's greatest weapon helps end its leadership, and the Red Queen then gives her Alicia's childhood memories. Perhaps that is the most human thing the corporation ever produces.
The reboots repeat the pattern at a smaller scale. Birkin injects himself and becomes the monster that chases the survivors in Welcome to Raccoon City. In Resident Evil (2026), the company's own antidote is lost to a courier it never planned for. Paradoxically, the Umbrella with the tidiest plan, the one in the Alice films, ends in the biggest ruin. If you want to see where each of these films lands, the Resident Evil movies ranked page gives my verdicts.

FAQs
What does the Umbrella Corporation do?
In the films, the Umbrella Corporation runs secret virus research, builds engineered soldiers and clones, and hides the results. In Resident Evil (2002) it keeps the T-virus in the Hive, a secret underground lab. In later films it tests the soldier Nemesis in Raccoon City, runs Project Alice, and stages outbreaks in replica cities at a base in Kamchatka. It also sells to the public, as the "Regenerate" skin product teaser in Resident Evil: Apocalypse shows.
Is Umbrella Corporation a real company?
No. The Umbrella Corporation is a fictional company from Capcom's Resident Evil games that also appears in the films. No real business runs the Hive, Raccoon City or the T-virus. Alice, the heroine of the six Alice films, was created for the movies and is not in the games.
What went wrong with Umbrella Corporation?
Umbrella repeatedly loses control of what it builds. The Red Queen computer, the soldier Nemesis, Dr. Isaacs and the clones of Alice all turn against it in the Alice films. In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Wesker destroys himself, Alicia Marcus, the Hive and the sleeping elite. In Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, William Birkin injects himself with a new virus and becomes a monster.
Does Umbrella Corp still exist?
In the real world, no, because it is fictional. In the films, the answer depends on the run. The Alice films end with Umbrella's leadership and the Hive destroyed, the 2021 reboot ends with Umbrella reporting no survivors from Raccoon City, and Resident Evil (2026) ends with the antidote lost. No film states what happens to the company afterward.
What was the goal of the Umbrella Corporation?
The films present several goals over time. In Resident Evil: Apocalypse, the T-virus began as research meant to treat Dr. Ashford's daughter's genetic condition. In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, Dr. James Marcus starts a virus project to save his dying daughter Alicia, and later Dr. Isaacs plans to release the virus and wipe out humanity while the rich and powerful sleep in cryogenic storage.
What is the USS in Resident Evil?
USS stands for Umbrella Security Service, the name for Umbrella's armed force. In the films it shows up as commando teams and troops rather than under one explained name. Examples are One's commando team in Resident Evil (2002), Major Cain's troops in Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Isaacs's convoy in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
