The Alice Saga: Six Films, 2002 to 2017

The first run is six films that follow Alice, played by Milla Jovovich, against the Umbrella Corporation, and Paul W. S. Anderson directed four of them. Alice was created for the films and does not appear in the games. Resident Evil (2002) opens with Alice waking in a mansion with no memory, before a commando team takes a train into the Hive, a secret underground lab, to find out why its computer, the Red Queen, has sealed everyone inside. It cost $33 million and made about $103 million worldwide. Michelle Rodriguez plays Rain, and Marilyn Manson is credited as composer.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), directed by Alexander Witt, moves the outbreak into Raccoon City, which Umbrella seals off. Sienna Guillory plays Jill Valentine, and Matthew G. Taylor plays the hulking Nemesis. Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), directed by Russell Mulcahy, jumps ahead to a world turned mostly to desert, where Alice wanders alone and Ali Larter's Claire leads a convoy of survivors. Both middle films cost $45 million.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010) brought Anderson back and was the first film in the saga shot in 3D, according to Screen Daily. It cost $60 million and grossed about $300 million worldwide, the biggest jump in the run. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012) opens with an attack on the ship Arcadia and a suburban nightmare in which Alice wakes as a housewife. It also brings in Ada Wong and Leon Kennedy, played by Li Bingbing and Johann Urb.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter closed the run. It premiered in Tokyo in December 2016, reached US theaters on January 27, 2017, and runs 107 minutes, the longest of the six. It cost $40 million and made about $312 million worldwide, but only $26.8 million of that came from the US. Alice returns to the Hive beneath Raccoon City, with Iain Glen's Dr. Isaacs and the Red Queen waiting. The Red Queen also has her own page at red queen resident evil.
